Unscheduled Chaos

Avery

The top floor of Pierce Industries was a fortress of climate-controlled, pin-drop silence. That professional tranquility shattered the instant the private elevator chimed, spitting out a woman in a blindingly bright crimson dress who marched toward my desk with the subtle grace of a wrecking ball.

"I am here to see Declan." She slammed her perfectly manicured hands onto the edge of my workstation, offering a razor-thin smile that held absolutely zero warmth.

"Do you have a scheduled appointment for this afternoon?"

"I don't require one. We share a very intimate history. Just buzz his office and let him know Bianca has arrived."

"I apologize, but Mr. Pierce maintains a strict calendar. I would be more than happy to look at his availability for early next week—"

"Pay attention to me, you glorified receptionist," she snapped, cutting off my sentence. "My name is Bianca Roth. I was in Declan's bed just last weekend, and I have absolutely no intention of leaving this floor until he comes out here."

"As I was explaining, without a pre-approved time slot or direct authorization from Mr. Pierce himself—"

"Who exactly do you think you are talking to?" She leaned closer, invading my space. "Just because you spend your days fetching his dry cleaning and pouring his coffee, you actually believe you hold some sort of power here?"

"Ma'am, if you cannot lower your voice, I will have to ask you to step back into the elevator—"

"You are incredibly pathetic. Playing the loyal little gatekeeper, pretending your existence matters to a man like that. I bet you sit here fantasizing about him finally noticing you, don't you? Sweetheart, you could hike that cheap polyester skirt up and part your legs right over this desk, and he still wouldn't look twice. He requires an actual woman in his life, not some desperate pencil-pusher playing corporate dress-up."

"Our security team will gladly escort you out of the building if you refuse to leave voluntarily."

"You wouldn't dare touch me. Do you have any idea who my father is? I could make one phone call from this lobby and have you permanently blacklisted from this city."

"And I can have you physically removed from this floor with a single press of my thumb." I calmly shifted my right hand, hovering my fingers directly over the silent panic button mounted beneath the wood of my desk. "The choice is entirely yours, Ms. Roth."

Bianca's pristine features twisted into an ugly mask of pure spite. Without a second of hesitation, her hand shot out, grabbing the heavy glass pitcher of ice water resting near my inbox. In one violent, sweeping arc, she dumped the entire freezing contents directly over my head.

The physical shock stole my breath. Frigid water cascaded down my scalp, instantly plastering my hair to my cheeks and soaking straight through my silk blouse—which, for the record, cost me a significant portion of my last paycheck.

"Oh, my mistake." She tossed the empty glass pitcher onto my keyboard. It landed with a harsh clatter. "It looks like someone needs to go fetch a mop."

Before I could even wipe the freezing water from my eyelashes or formulate a professional response to a physical assault, the polished metal doors of the executive elevator slid open again.

Declan Pierce stepped out. His imposing frame instantly commanded the room, sucking the available oxygen from the lobby. He paused mid-stride, his sharp eyes taking in the disastrous scene—me dripping onto the carpet, Bianca standing tall with an arrogant tilt to her chin, and the puddle of ice water currently short-circuiting my workstation.

"Well." His deep voice cut right through the heavy tension in the room. "This is certainly not the operational standard I expect on my floor."

Bianca’s hostile demeanor vanished in a millisecond, replaced by a sickeningly sweet radiance. "Declan, darling! I was just in the neighborhood and—"

"And you decided to assault my personal assistant and destroy company hardware?" He crossed the distance between the elevator and my desk in three massive strides. "That is an incredibly bold strategy."

"I was merely attempting to have a simple conversation with your employee." Her tone was pure honey, though the glare she shot me was pure poison. "She rudely refused to let me through to your office."

"She refused because that is exactly what I pay her to do." He reached into the breast pocket of his tailored suit jacket, extracting a pristine, neatly folded handkerchief, and held it out to me. "Miss Sutton follows my explicit directives without fail. It is what makes her irreplaceable to me."

I took the square of fabric, pressing it against my dripping chin, intensely grateful that my makeup was waterproof. The linen carried the sharp, cedar and spice scent of his cologne.

"But darling," Bianca protested, taking a calculated step toward him and shifting her weight onto one hip. "After that incredible, magical night we spent together—"

"You mean the hospital charity gala where you overindulged at the open bar, and I had my security team put you in a taxi so you wouldn't embarrass yourself further? That was far from magical, although I am fully aware you have been spinning a very different fairy tale to your friends."

I bit down hard on the inside of my cheek to keep a straight face.

"I—" Bianca stared at him, her mouth opening and closing in stunned silence.

"Now." Declan stepped closer to my chair, and his large, warm hand clamped firmly down on my damp shoulder. The sudden heat of his palm bled right through the chilled, wet silk of my blouse, sending a dangerous, electric jolt straight across my chest. "You have just physically attacked my favorite employee and likely ruined several thousand dollars of electronics. Do I need to have the authorities brought up here, or just the building guards?"

My face flooded with heat at being labeled his favorite. He was always doing this—wielding his natural charm like a weapon, making people feel elevated. I knew better than to read into it.

"You wouldn't actually do that." Her arrogant posture finally began to crack.

"Test me." His grip tightened fractionally on my shoulder, a solid weight of protection. "I take care of the people who keep my business running. Honestly, I should have your name permanently flagged at the front desk. What is your assessment, Miss Sutton?"

"I believe that is a highly appropriate measure, Mr. Pierce." I kept my voice perfectly level, refusing to acknowledge the distracting warmth of his hand on my skin.

Bianca’s complexion mottled into an ugly, furious red.

"This is completely insane. You are going to deeply regret treating me like this. Both of you."

"My only regret is that I didn't have the security cameras angled better to catch this pathetic display. The guards are already in the elevator. I highly recommend you vanish before the doors open."

"I am going straight to my father about this!"

"I fully expect you to. Give Greg my best. And remind him that his company's latest stock valuation is looking incredibly vulnerable right now."

Bianca turned on her heel and stormed back toward the elevators. The second the steel doors sealed her away, Declan dropped his hand from my shoulder. The sudden absence of his body heat left me shivering again.

I pushed my chair back and stood up. Freezing water dripped from the hem of my skirt onto the polished marble.

"Are you injured?" He frowned, his intense gaze sweeping over my soaked clothes and the ruined desk. "Did the glass hit you?"

"Just my dignity. And maybe the motherboard." I tapped a key on my waterlogged keyboard. It responded with a sharp, static hiss and a tiny spark.

"Step away from that. I will have the tech department swap out the entire rig." He pulled his phone from his pocket. "My driver is downstairs. He can have you at the luxury boutiques on Fifth Avenue in ten minutes. Take my corporate card. Replace the clothes, the shoes, whatever she ruined."

"I appreciate that, Mr. Pierce, but it really isn't necessary. I only have an hour left on my shift, and I have dinner plans immediately after."

"You plan to sit at this desk freezing in wet clothes for another sixty minutes?"

"I will be perfectly fine," I pushed back, flashing a tight, stubborn smile. "But thank you for the offer."

He stared at me for a long, heavy second, his expression making it abundantly clear he thought I was being ridiculous, but he finally offered a curt nod and stepped away.

I pushed through the heavy wooden doors of the downtown restaurant an hour later, desperate for a quiet evening with my best friend. The host guided me toward our usual secluded booth, but I froze halfway across the dining room. Piper wasn't alone. A man in a tailored suit was sitting right next to her.

"Aves!" Piper shot up from the leather bench, waving frantically. "You made it! Get over here and meet Gavin!"

I pasted on a polite smile and slid into the booth across from them. Trust Piper to ambush me with a completely unapproved blind date on the worst day of my professional life.

"Avery, this is Gavin. He works in corporate finance. We bumped into each other at that hot yoga studio last month." Her eyes were practically beaming with aggressive matchmaking energy. "Gavin, this is my absolute best friend."

"It is great to finally meet you." Gavin flashed a perfectly calculated, ultra-white smile. "Piper has been talking you up for the last twenty minutes."

I fought down the immediate urge to kick Piper in the shins under the table. "Hopefully she left out the embarrassing parts."

We suffered through ten minutes of excruciatingly forced small talk about market trends and the appetizer menu until Gavin finally stood up to use the restroom.

The second his back was turned, Piper leaned across the table. "Isn't he gorgeous? Look at the fit on that suit. And he is doing incredibly well for himself—he just closed on a massive place in the financial district."

"Piper, why would you do this?"

"Because you never go out anymore! You are working yourself into the ground, Aves. You need a distraction, someone to take you out and spoil you a little."

"I can barely keep my head above water right now. Between the job and paying for Mom's new medical treatments..."

"Has there been any progress with her?" The manic energy drained out of Piper's face, replaced by genuine concern.

"No real change. The new specialist is pushing an experimental therapy, and the out-of-pocket costs are astronomical."

"And your brother is still completely off the grid?" She scowled. "I still cannot believe he just vanished and dumped this entire financial nightmare onto your shoulders."

"I am not wasting my energy being angry at him tonight. Mom broke her back raising us by herself. Covering these bills is the only thing keeping her going, so I will do whatever it takes."

Gavin slid back into the leather booth, adjusting his silk tie and flashing that practiced smile again.

"Sorry for the delay. So, what were we discussing?"

"Avery was just telling us about her insane workload," Piper supplied helpfully.

"Right. You are in administrative support, correct?" Gavin asked, his tone dropping into something far too casual.

"I am the executive personal assistant to Declan Pierce."

"Declan Pierce? At Pierce Industries?" Gavin shifted his weight, leaning his forearms on the table as his gaze slowly dragged up and down my body. "That must be an incredibly... demanding role."

"Excuse me?"

"Oh, come on, we all know how the game is played at that level." He offered a sleazy, conspiratorial wink. "A stunning girl like you, working entirely alone for a billionaire known for his appetites. I am sure you are putting all of your natural assets to excellent use to secure your spot at the top."

Piper gasped, her eyes going wide. "Gavin!"

"What? I am just acknowledging the reality of corporate dynamics." He waved a dismissive hand at me. "I am not judging the hustle. If you have the body for it, you might as well use it to get ahead."

"You are a disgusting piece of trash," Piper screamed, surging to her feet and slapping her palms against the table hard enough to rattle our water glasses. "Get the hell away from us right now!"

"Whoa, relax. I was just giving her a compliment—"

"Get out of this restaurant before I throw this drink in your face!" Piper pointed a trembling finger toward the exit.

"Fine. Have it your way. Guess some people just can't handle a little honesty." He scrambled out of the booth, hastily straightening his jacket before quickly retreating through the dining room.

Piper dropped back down onto the bench, burying her face in her hands.

"Aves, I am so incredibly sorry. I had no idea he was such a repulsive creep. He was totally normal at the studio!"

"It is fine. Really. Better he showed his true colors before we ordered the entrees." I pulled the cocktail menu toward me, desperate to reset the night. "Now, are we ordering the loaded nachos or what?"

"I just feel sick about what he implied." Piper shook her head. "About you and your boss."

"Ignore him. He's an idiot. I'll take a double margarita, please."

Piper managed a weak smile. "Although, considering how intensely protective Mr. Pierce was in the office today... maybe Gavin wasn't entirely wrong about him having a thing for you. I have seen the way that man watches you when he thinks no one is looking."

I nearly choked on my sip of ice water. "Are you insane? Absolutely not. He is my employer."

"And you are brilliant and beautiful. Why wouldn't he be interested?"

"Stop right there." I grabbed a napkin and dabbed at my mouth. "We have a strictly professional boundary. It is not like that."

Piper let out a sharp laugh. "Okay, okay, I'm backing off! But seriously, everyone in this city knows exactly what Declan Pierce is about. He is completely ruthless. He cycles through runway models like accessories and spends his weekends on superyachts. Just guard your heart, Aves. Men with that kind of money don't settle down; they just collect shiny new toys until they get bored."

"Believe me, I am fully aware of who I work for." Just as the words left my mouth, my phone vibrated violently against the wood table.

I flipped the screen over. A new text message glowed in the dim light. The sender was Declan.

*325 Park Avenue, Penthouse. Come now.*

No greeting. No context. Just a blunt, arrogant command.

"Is everything alright?" Piper leaned forward, trying to read my expression.

"It's the office." I grabbed my leather purse and immediately stood up. "I need to take a rain check on dinner."

"Are you kidding me right now? It is past eight o'clock at night!"

"I know, I know, but I have to—"

"No, you don't! You are not on call 24/7. What could possibly be happening right now that requires you to abandon our dinner?"

"He probably decided to host a last-minute investor meeting. He does this occasionally. Someone has to manage the catering staff and organize the presentation files."

"And that someone always has to be you, no matter the hour?"

"That is the job description, Piper."

"Your shift ended hours ago." Piper reached out, catching my wrist. "I am just worried about you walking into his private space this late."

"I know you are. But this salary is paying for Mom's treatments. Without this job, she has nothing. I absolutely cannot risk giving him a reason to replace me."

"Just... keep your guard up, okay?"

I nodded, pulling away and heading straight for the exit. The night air was biting as I stepped onto the curb and threw my arm up to hail a passing taxi.

The cab sped through the illuminated grid of the city. The crushing weight of my mother's medical debt sat heavy on my chest. I couldn't afford to make a mistake. I needed this paycheck too much to care about my own exhaustion.

The luxury high-rise at 325 Park Avenue cut a massive, imposing silhouette against the night sky. I walked past the nodding doorman and stepped directly into the private, keycard-access elevator. As the car shot upward, a knot of unease began to tighten in my stomach.

Whenever Declan hosted his impromptu evening meetings, the lobby was usually chaotic with private chefs, waitstaff, and executives in tailored suits. Tonight, the building was dead silent.

The elevator doors parted with a soft chime. I stepped out onto the penthouse floor. The massive, open-concept living space was dimly lit, the floor-to-ceiling windows framing the sprawling, glittering skyline below. But there was no one here. No catering trays. No investors.

"Mr. Pierce?"

My voice echoed slightly against the expensive modern furniture. The only sound was the faint, mechanical hum of the central air conditioning.

A cold spike of adrenaline hit my bloodstream. This was wrong. I took a slow step backward toward the open elevator.

A heavy floorboard creaked loudly in the shadows directly behind me.

I spun around, my heart slamming against my ribs in pure panic. Declan stood perfectly still at the edge of the hallway, half-swallowed by the darkness.

Before I could even open my mouth to speak, he moved. He closed the massive distance between us in three long, predatory strides. I tried to step back, but my shoulder blades hit the cold plaster of the wall. He boxed me in instantly, his massive frame trapping me in place as his large hand slammed flat against the wall right next to my head.
