Hearing the song clearly, Duncan's face turned pale, and his lips trembled as he stammered, "Could it be...could it be a mermaid? I saw a mermaid at Shingle Beach."

Duncan didn't like reading, but he had read quite a few strange tales and heard many stories. He had no fondness for mermaids, in fact, he was quite afraid of them.

He feared the kind of creature that appeared harmless or even beautifu
