The Secret Heir
Valerie POV
A steady, rhythmic beep pierces through the haze of unconsciousness. I slowly flutter my heavy eyelids open, fighting against the blinding glare of the fluorescent lights overhead. The sterile smell of antiseptic and bleach immediately hits my nose. It signals that I am back in the pack hospital. A wave of suffocating terror washes over me, chilling my blood. My hands instinctively shoot downward. I clutch my flat stomach, my fingers digging desperately into the thin cotton fabric of the hospital gown. The traumatic memories of Barton’s brutal grip crash through my mind. I remember the rough, biting ropes tearing into my flesh as I struggled against the metal chair. I remember the terrifying pool of dark crimson blood spreading on the freezing cellar floor beneath me. My breathing turns shallow and erratic. I wait for the agonizing cramp to return, praying to the Moon Goddess that my baby is still alive.
The privacy curtain rustles loudly. Dr. Lowell steps into the private alcove. Her face is carved into lines of grave, exhausted concern. Seeing me awake, she rushes forward to check my vitals. She adjusts the IV drip connected to the back of my hand, her touch gentle but carrying an undeniable urgency. She checks the glowing numbers on the heart monitor next to my bed.
"You experienced severe physical distress, Luna Valerie. You came perilously close to suffering a severe miscarriage." She warns me in a hushed, trembling whisper.
I look down at my arms. Raw, bloody chafing encircles my wrists and delicate ankles. The rough fibers of the industrial rope carved deep into my skin, leaving angry, swollen red marks that throb with every heartbeat. The crushing truth pours out of me. I cannot hold the heavy dam back any longer. Through silent, bitter tears, I lay everything bare.
"I attempted to run away, Doctor. Darius has secretly fathered an heir with Giselle. They elevated a pureblood Beta woman over his own mate." I confess, my voice cracking under the devastating weight of the betrayal.
Dr. Lowell listens in stunned, horrified silence. Her hands freeze over the medical chart resting at the end of my bed. She stares at me, her eyes wide with unmasked shock. We realize the terrible truth in tandem. The Alpha’s family kept her strictly in the dark regarding pack affairs. They excluded her from the medical planning surrounding Giselle. It is because she has always treated me with genuine, professional human kindness. They knew she would never stand for such calculated cruelty against her Luna.
I reach out and desperately clutch the doctor’s white sleeve. My grip is tight and shaking. I understand all too well the lethal danger my child is in. An unborn, half-human child would have a massive target on its back from Darius's ambitious relatives. They would never allow a hybrid to threaten their pureblood legacy. They would erase my baby without a second thought.
"You must keep my pregnancy a strict secret. If his family finds out I am carrying a child, they will find a way to get rid of it. Please, Dr. Lowell. You have to help me." I beg her, my tears soaking the stiff collar of my gown.
Dr. Lowell looks down at my bruised hands. She is deeply moved by my plight and the harrowing marks on my body. She places her warm palm over my trembling fingers, squeezing them tight.
"I solemnly swear my silence, Luna. I promise to protect your secret." She vows, her tone ringing with steadfast loyalty.
Moments later, the heavy wooden door swings open. Darius strides into the room. His broad shoulders fill the doorway, blocking out the light from the hallway. His eyes are shadowed with dark circles and heavy guilt. I notice the dried blood staining his knuckles from where he shattered Barton's jaw. He steps right to the bedside, his intense gaze sweeping over my pale face and the thick bandages wrapped around my wrists.
"Is my wife alright? Tell me her condition." He anxiously asks after my medical condition, turning his tense posture toward the doctor.
Dr. Lowell smoothly intercedes. She steps between Darius and the bed, covering for me with seamless clinical authority. She does not flinch under the powerful Alpha's intense stare.
"Her sudden bleeding was merely an irregular, stress-induced menstrual cycle, Alpha Darius. It was a heavy period brought on by the extreme trauma she endured." She informs him without a single hesitation.
She then turns a piercing, venomous glare on him.
"I must caution you. Holding your own wife captive like a common criminal in a freezing basement is directly responsible for her physical collapse. She has friends in this hospital. We will not turn a blind eye if she is brought in like this again." She pointedly admonishes him, her voice laced with a sharp, fearless reprimand.
Darius stiffens at her bold words. He does not offer a rebuttal or try to assert his dominance. He simply nods, signing the discharge papers Dr. Lowell shoves into his hands.
The drive back to our residential estate is thick with a suffocating silence. The heavy doors of Darius's luxury SUV lock us into a tense, isolated space. The rich smell of expensive leather does nothing to mask the prison-like reality of my life. I stare blankly out the tinted passenger window. Dark trees whip past the glass, blurring into an endless stretch of shadowy woods. My mind races with half-formed plans. I need to figure out how to escape his suffocating grasp. I need to find a hidden place where my child can be safe from his ruthless family.
Darius attempts to extend an olive branch. He reaches across the wide center console. His warm fingers lightly touch my cold hand. I flinch, pulling my hand away and folding my arms defensively over my chest. He lets out a heavy breath, gripping the leather steering wheel tight enough to turn his knuckles white.
"I want you to know what I did. In retribution for what occurred in the basement, I publicly and mercilessly stripped Barton of his pack ranking. I broke his bones. I cast him out beyond the territory borders as an exiled rogue." He reveals, his voice rumbling through the quiet cabin.
He casts a quick glance in my direction, his eyes searching my face for any sign of forgiveness.
"No wolf will ever dare show disrespect to their Luna again. I made sure they all understand the severe consequences." He passionately declares.
I look at the dark trees whipping past the window. I feel only hollow bitterness. Being cast out of the pack is a severe sentence. Rogues are the lowest scavengers, left to rot in the unforgiving wilderness without the protection of a pack. But punishing a violent enforcer cannot mend what is fundamentally shattered between us. Barton was merely a symptom of the vicious disease infecting this pack. As long as Giselle and her pureblood baby remain at the center of his world, I will forever be an unwanted shadow. I will be perpetually humiliated by his family and his loyal subjects. They will always find a way to make my life miserable.
I turn my gaze toward my husband. I look at the sharp line of his jaw, the man I once thought was my entire destiny.
"I want you to choose, Darius. Me, or Giselle." I deliver a quiet, definitive ultimatum.
A tiny, desperate part of my soul still yearns for him to prove me wrong. I pray that our fated bond will finally compel him to choose our marriage over their twisted plans. I want him to hit the brakes, pull the car to the shoulder of the road, and tell me I am the only mate he needs. If he chooses me right now, maybe we can heal. Maybe I can find the strength to forgive him for the horrors of the past few days.
Instead, his jaw tightens. A muscle feathers along his cheek. His response crushes whatever fragile pieces of my heart remained intact.
"I won't do that, Valerie." He says, his voice cooling as he sighs in heavy exasperation.
He shakes his head, clearly irritated by my firm demand.
"The political reality is far too complex for such simple ultimatums. I am under relentless, suffocating pressure from my parents and Giselle's influential family. The Alpha Council demands an immediate heir to preserve my territorial sovereignty. I cannot just walk away from my sworn duties as Alpha." He argues, reciting his royal obligations like a rehearsed, heartless speech.
"Why couldn't you simply wait to have an heir with your own wife? Why did you give up on us so fast?" I ask with a breaking voice, unable to stop the tears from welling in my eyes.
His expression hardens into rigid stone. He stares dead ahead at the dark road illuminated by the headlights.
"You need to immediately cease all of Dr. Lowell's specialized fertility treatments. I will not have you risk your health anymore chasing false hope." He demands, his tone leaving no room for negotiation.
"Even if I am willing to try? Even if I still want to give you an heir?" I push back, my fingers digging into the denim of my jeans.
Darius grips the steering wheel harder. He views my desperate questions as nothing more than stubborn defiance. He does not understand the depth of my pain.
"Even if you do somehow manage to get pregnant, Valerie, it wouldn't matter." He states coldly.
I freeze. My breath catches in my throat. I stare at his harsh profile in pure disbelief, waiting for the words I know will destroy me.
"It would only ever be a human-werewolf hybrid. Did you honestly believe a halfblood would ever be accepted by the Council as a rightful Alpha heir? Giselle’s baby will be a pureblood combining Beta and Alpha strength. Superior. Like her. Like me."
