Carrying the Alpha's Heir
Valerie POV
A high-pitched buzzing fills my ears, drowning out the ambient chatter of the busy hospital corridor. The senior obstetrician's monstrous words echo through my skull, bouncing off the sterile walls and sinking deep into my bones like icy poison. I stand frozen on the polished tile floor, staring at Giselle as the bottom drops out of my universe.
The initial panic on Giselle’s delicate features vanishes in the blink of an eye. It morphs into a cold, triumphant smirk that curls the corners of her glossed lips. She shifts her weight, allowing her hand to caress the slight curve of her stomach in a gesture of pure, undeniable ownership. She tosses her sleek blonde hair over her shoulder with calculated cruelty, her bright eyes gleaming with undisguised victory.
“I’m carrying Darius’s child. A pure Alpha needs a true werewolf to bring his heir into this world, Valerie. Surely even you understand that basic biology.”
I stumble back in sickening disbelief. The fluorescent lights overhead seem to flicker, casting harsh shadows across the hallway. My chest tightens until I can barely draw a breath. The man who holds my heart, the man who marked me and claimed me as his equal against all pack opposition, has fathered a child with another woman.
“How could Darius cheat on our sacred mate bond?” I demand. My voice rings down the hall with a desperate, fractured edge.
She sneers, waving a dismissive hand through the air as if swatting away an annoying insect.
“It wasn't cheating in the physical sense, so don't be so dramatic. It was an artificial union, a combining of our elite genetic lineages orchestrated behind your back. Your husband's own mother, Helena, and his sister, Corinna, brought the idea to me. I am a Beta's daughter with a noble bloodline. I am fulfilling the royal duty that a weak, barren human mate could never perform.”
Without waiting for my reply, she turns on her designer heels. She sweeps down the hall flanked by her attending physicians, moving like a queen marching with her loyal court. She disappears around the corner, leaving me paralyzed in the empty corridor, suffocating in the wake of her revelation.
The crushing weight of reality presses down on my chest, threatening to snap my ribs. I spent two long years pouring my soul into the Silver Lake Pack. I organized endless community outreach programs to bridge the gap between the wolves and the surrounding towns. I tended to the pack's daily needs with unyielding dedication, treating every member like my own family. I subjected my own flesh to agonizing chemical regimens, enduring endless injections, hormone spikes, and invasive procedures just to give Darius the heir he so desperately wanted. Despite my selfless devotion, I am still nothing more than a pathetic, worthless human plaything in their eyes. They view me as a defective outsider occupying a throne I have no right to hold.
The blood roars in my ears. I want to scream until my throat bleeds. I want to shatter the glass walls of the clinic and watch the sharp shards rain down around me. I want to race through traffic toward the administration building, storm into Darius’s office, and tear down his perfect world brick by brick.
But my hand drops to my side, and my fingers graze the thin medical report folded inside my coat pocket. The crisp paper crinkles under the fabric. That subtle sound acts as a bucket of ice water poured over my fiery rage. The fierce instinct of motherhood stops me in my tracks. A secret life is blooming inside my own womb. I am carrying Darius’s true, naturally conceived child. I cannot afford reckless fury right now. My baby is vulnerable, and exposing the truth in a fit of hysterical anger might put us both in danger from Helena and Corinna's scheming. I must protect my unborn child at all costs. I swallow the bitter bile rising in my throat, force my shaking legs to move, and turn toward the glass exit doors.
Clutching the leather steering wheel until my knuckles turn chalk white, I drive to the pack administration building. The journey passes in a hazy blur of gray asphalt, blaring horns, and blinding rage. I pull into the reserved Luna parking spot, throw the car into park with a violent jerk, and march toward the grand entrance. Every step up the wide marble staircase feels like marching toward a public gallows. My heart hammers against my ribs like a trapped bird, but my face remains a mask of cold, unbreakable stone. I reach the top floor, my boot heels clicking against the polished hardwood.
The executive receptionist jumps up from her mahogany desk, waving her hands in a frantic attempt to stall me. I ignore her startled protests, bypass her desk, and shove Darius’s double oak office doors open with a resounding bang.
Darius looks up from behind his massive mahogany desk. Stacks of printed border reports are scattered before him. The instant his dark eyes lock onto my pale face, the brief spark of annoyance in his expression dissolves. It is replaced by a guarded, defensive grimace that extinguishes my last lingering shreds of hope. He already knows why I am here. The guilt is written plain as day across his features.
He rounds the desk swiftly, holding his large hands outstretched in a desperate attempt to pacify me before I can speak.
“Valerie, please, just breathe. It isn’t what you think. I haven’t betrayed you physically. I haven't slept with her. But the pack elders and the council have backed me into a corner. I desperately need an heir to secure our territory, and I agreed that Giselle is a suitable surrogate. That’s all this is, a simple, practical arrangement.”
His clinical, matter-of-fact tone hits me with the visceral force of a physical blow. The air vanishes from my lungs. A sickening chasm of betrayal yawns open beneath my feet, swallowing every sweet word he whispered in our bed just yesterday. He speaks about creating life with another woman as if he is discussing a supply chain logistics contract.
“You agreed? Is this your twisted way of pushing me out? Is this because you want a divorce?” I choke out the words, my throat burning with unshed tears and ragged fury.
“No! Not at all, Valerie. I love you. Think of this like a business contract for the stability of our pack. It doesn't change what we are. It doesn’t have to affect our relationship at all.” He insists, his deep voice rising with urgent frustration as he tries to close the distance between us.
My heart fractures into jagged, irreparable shards. The pain radiates through my chest, making it hard to stand upright under the crushing weight of his delusion. He actually believes his own twisted justification.
“Wouldn’t affect our relationship? Darius, Giselle is carrying your flesh and blood! She and that baby will be your public family, your legacy. What does that make me? A glorified house guest? A sterile pet you keep in the master bedroom while another woman stands beside you as the mother of the future Alpha?” I fire back, my voice trembling with raw, untamed fury that echoes off the high ceiling.
I was already barely tolerated as an outsider in this werewolf-dominated society. I spent years enduring their condescending glares, whispered insults, and blatant disrespect during pack meetings. Watching him parade around with a high-ranking Beta woman and their child would reduce my daily existence to an endless cycle of public humiliation. The pack would worship Giselle, elevating her to the true Luna in everything but name. I would be cast aside as the pathetic human pity case.
Worse still, Darius knows my deepest, most agonizing trauma. I have laid my soul bare to this man in the quiet, intimate hours of the night. He knows that an illegitimate child tore apart my adoptive human family, leaving me an abandoned orphan scarred by broken vows and shattered trust. He knew the absolute depths of that childhood nightmare, the lonely nights I spent crying in temporary foster homes because adult betrayal had destroyed my only sanctuary. Yet he subjected me to the exact same torment without a second thought. He dragged me right back into the very nightmare he promised to protect me from.
Lowering my trembling hand from my stomach, I clench my fingers into tight, white-knuckled fists to steady my shuddering body. I stand tall, squaring my shoulders, refusing to let him see me break into a million pieces. Looking directly into the dark eyes of the man I loved more than life itself, I deliver an unwavering ultimatum.
“Darius, either Giselle leaves with that baby forever the moment it’s born—or I will.”
