No More Apologies

Recovering from the awkward intrusion, Helena shoved Aria forcefully into the hospital room. Her manic grip left a throbbing ache in Aria's upper arm as she propelled her daughter past the heavy wooden door. She plastered on an exaggerated, fake smile, her voice dripping with desperate appeasement as she faced the man standing by the bed.

"Dorian, it is Aria who has been out of line today. I have brought her here to apologize to you. She knows she overstepped."

Standing near Nadia's pristine white bed, Dorian turned his icy, expectant glare onto Aria. The tender devotion he had just shown to Nadia vanished, replaced by a cold, commanding authority. He stared at the two women, anticipating Aria's usual groveling submission. In all their past arguments, she had always been the first to back down, the first to swallow her pride to keep the peace. That familiar expectation eased his pent-up frustration. He waited in silence, demanding her surrender without uttering a single word.

Helena nudged her daughter hard in the ribs, shooting her a warning glare. "Aria, come on, apologize right now."

Aria merely smirked at the absurdity of the scene. The lingering scent of medicinal ointment mixed with the suffocating tension in the air. "Apologize for what? Dorian, juggling two women like this, doesn't it wear you out? It tires me just watching."

Dorian's jaw tightened dangerously.

Aria met his annoyed glare head-on with steady fearlessness. "If you cannot let go of Nadia, I will gladly step aside. You can have each other. Breaking up was a calculated decision on my part. I am no longer desperate enough to be a pathetic pawn in your twisted drama. You want to play the devoted caretaker? Be my guest, but leave me out of it."

Dorian exploded with rage at the accusation. He stepped aggressively away from the bed, his voice echoing against the sterile walls. "Aria, what Nadia and I have is aboveboard! Do not project your sleazy nonsense onto us! Even a temper tantrum has its limits. You are throwing dirt on Nadia's name, and I will not stand for it. I demand you apologize to her for tarnishing her reputation!"

Seizing the theatrical moment, Nadia began to weep in hysterics from her spot on the mattress. She clutched the crisp hospital sheets, tears pouring down her flushed face. "Aria, how can you spread such vicious lies about me? We dated once, but that is in the past! He is only here as a friend! You owe me an apology! I cannot take this cruelty anymore... I..."

Nadia let out a breathless gasp. She rolled her eyes back and collapsed into a dead faint on the pillows.

Dorian slammed his hand against the emergency call button, panic flashing across his face.

Doctors and nurses rushed into the suite, their footsteps loud against the linoleum as they quickly surrounded the bed to check the unconscious woman. After a tense minute of examining her vitals, the lead physician let out a relieved sigh, confirming it was merely a harmless faint triggered by emotional overload. They advised Dorian to keep the room quiet to avoid further distress and filed out, leaving the three of them alone once more.

The heavy silence was suffocating. Dorian turned a dark, murderous scowl onto Aria. Blaming her for pushing the fragile girl over the edge, he lost control. He lunged forward and swung his hand with fierce force toward her face.

Aria saw the heavy blow coming. She stepped back, pivoting her weight to dodge the incoming strike.

But Helena, desperate to secure the Vance family's financial ties to Dorian, reacted with sickening speed. She grabbed Aria by the shoulders and shoved her own daughter right back into the path of the heavy blow.

*Slap!*

The sharp, sickening sound echoed through the sterile room. Aria's head snapped hard to the side. The impact sent a blazing, burning numbness shooting across her pale cheek.

Dorian's hand hung frozen in the air. His face registered an instant flash of regret for the impulsive violence. As his arm had shot out, his mind had screamed at him to pull back. But Aria had lurched forward unexpectedly, meeting his palm with terrifying force. He opened his mouth, wanting to say he had not meant to hit her. But his massive pride choked back any apology when he saw the bright, blooming red handprint forming on Aria's cheek. Apologizing now would mean admitting defeat to a woman who had just insulted him.

For Aria, the physical sting of the strike paled in comparison to the razor-sharp, soul-crushing betrayal tearing through her chest. The throbbing pain in her face meant nothing. She slowly turned her head to look at Helena. Her own mother had physically offered her up for punishment just to save the family business, treating her own flesh and blood like a sacrificial lamb to appease a billionaire's temper. Helena's eyes flickered with a brief, cowardly guilt before she clenched her fists and looked away.

Dorian broke the tense silence. He hesitantly reached out his hand to check on the damage to her face.

Aria sharply slapped his hand away. "Don't touch me."

Her voice was venomous, stripped of all emotion except pure disgust.

The sharp rejection sent a faint sting through the back of his hand. His fleeting guilt evaporated into defensive annoyance. He pulled his arm back, his expression hardening. "Aria, you had that coming for what you did to Nadia."

Aria laughed, a bitter, hollow sound that pierced the quiet room. She met his frosty gaze without flinching, her voice dropping to a final, definitive register. "Dorian, one last time: we're through."

Darkening with rage at her unyielding defiance, Dorian decided to wield his ultimate, most devastating weapon. He knew exactly how to break her spirit.

"Do not push me, Aria. Think hard about this," Dorian sneered, stepping closer to tower over her. "If you end things, do not expect the Thorne family to keep bailing out the Vance family. You are not that high-and-mighty heiress anymore. Lose the spoiled princess routine. I can pamper you, or I can take every last cent away in a heartbeat."

Aria scoffed at his threat. "Pamper me? Dorian, hand on heart, doesn't saying that make you feel even a little guilty?"

Her mind flashed to the reality of his so-called pampering. She remembered his constant, daily belittling in front of his wealthy peers. She remembered the public humiliations, the times his friends had placed bets on her submission like she was some cheap, disposable entertainment. And she remembered his blatant, unwavering favoritism toward Nadia. Whenever trouble arose, Aria was always the afterthought, a punching bag for his endless frustrations. She had never experienced a single moment of genuine care.

Her sarcastic, poison-laced question struck a deep nerve. Dorian swallowed hard. For a fraction of a second, the undeniable truth pierced through his arrogance. He had been cruel to her. He had used her family's financial ruin as a leash to keep her obedient.

Yet, his towering ego quickly rushed in to repair the damage. He convinced himself that her defiance was just a temporary flare-up. Once she walked out those doors and faced the harsh reality of bankruptcy, she would come crawling back. She always caved when the pressure got too high.

Dorian ground his teeth together, his eyes locking onto hers. "Fine, we're done. I cannot wait to see how you and the Vance family manage without my money."

Instead of crumbling, her lips curved into a faint, victorious smile. The oppressive weight of the past year dissolved into thin air.

"Don't trouble yourself, Mr. Thorne."

Aria delivered the formal title with cold precision, the sound of his surname acting as a final severing of their ties. Tuning out Helena's frantic curses, she stepped out of reach. The older woman physically attempted to stop her, clawing at the fabric of her coat. Aria yanked herself free, spun around on her heel, and walked out of the room with her head held high.

Left seething at her unprecedented defiance, Dorian stood frozen. He could only glare at her retreating back as she disappeared down the corridor. He had expected begging; instead, she had discarded him.

Helena dropped heavily to the linoleum floor, groveling right at his expensive leather shoes. She clutched his pant leg, her voice shrill with sheer panic. "Dorian, please forgive her! She does not know what she is saying! I promise you, I will go home and whip that disobedient daughter back into shape. I will make her beg for your forgiveness! Just do not pull your investments!"

Dorian stared down at the pathetic woman weeping on the floor. He offered only a cold, sarcastic smirk, his dark eyes still burning with fury as he listened to her frantic promises.
