The Humiliating Kiss
Nadia POV
I expected cold steel against my skin. I expected him to twist my wrist until the bone popped, rip the hunting knife from my grip, and pin me against the mahogany bar with a sneer.
I did not expect his mouth on mine.
The impact blew past every scrap of rational thought in my head. There was no hesitation in the way he took my lips, no question of permission or polite restraint. His mouth was hard, hot, and demanding, capturing mine with the brutal precision of a predator claiming territory. My jaw ached beneath the pressure, my breath hitching in my throat as his scent flooded my senses—rich amber, smoke, cedar, and the dark, intoxicating musk of an unyielding alpha.
My wolf should have snarled. My wolf should have surged forward to tear his throat out for daring to touch us. Instead, a traitorous shiver rippled straight down my spine, pooling low in my belly with sudden, terrifying heat.
Only minutes ago, humiliation and heartbreak had driven me up those crimson stairs. I had stood in the rain, dressed in faded denim and heavy combat boots, ready to bleed out the fury of being discarded and stood up by a mate who never showed. I had brought the knife to defend my pride against whoever ruled this decadent den. I had drawn the weapon to prove I was not prey.
Yet here I was, melting into the very monster I meant to threaten.
His lips moved with bruising mastery, parting mine and claiming every inch of air I had left. He did not rush. He tasted me slowly, deliberately grinding his mouth against mine until my thoughts turned to liquid ash. I tried to summon the will to shove him away, to ram the heels of my hands into his broad shoulders, but my muscles refused to obey. My traitorous body softened, arching toward the heat pouring off his frame.
A low growl vibrated deep inside his chest, rough and possessive. His large hand clamped around my waist, fingers biting through the denim of my jacket to haul me flush against his hard thighs. The sudden contact sent a jolt of fire through my veins. The heat of him burned through our clothes, searing away the last shred of my defenses.
My fingers went numb. My grip on the hilt slackened, the leather-wrapped handle slipping through my sweaty palm.
The hunting knife tumbled from my hand, slicing through the heavy air before hitting the thick carpet with a muted thud.
The sound should have broken the spell. It should have snapped me back to reality and reminded me of the danger. It did not.
The alpha shifted his weight, pressing me deeper against the wall. His other hand rose, large and calloused, cupping the side of my jaw and tilting my head back at an angle that left my throat bare. He plundered my mouth with ruthless hunger, his tongue sweeping past my lips to taste every shuddering breath I offered. My knees buckled beneath his weight, my bones turning to jelly.
Without realizing what I was doing, my hand crept upward. My fingers slid past the lapel of his tailored jacket, pressing flat against the crisp cotton of his dress shirt. Beneath my trembling palm, his heart hammered against his ribs—heavy, rapid, and fiercely alive. The steady rhythm matched my own erratic pulse. For a terrifying, intoxicating second, I stopped fighting. I surrendered to the fire storm he ignited inside me, clinging to him like he was the only solid thing in a spinning world.
Then, just as the embers consumed me, he pulled back.
The sudden cold air felt like a slap. His lips hovered a fraction of an inch above mine, brushing against my sensitized skin with every heavy exhale. He did not look at my eyes. His gaze drifted downward, dropping past my chin to the discarded hunting knife lying uselessly on the dark floor.
A faint, mocking curve touched the corner of his lips.
"You were never going to use it." His voice was low, velvet smooth, and laced with infuriating amusement.
The words pierced straight through the intoxicating haze.
Shame hit me like a bucket of ice water. The blood rushed to my face, scalding hot and suffocating. My mind scrambled, screaming at me to move, to run, to undo the last sixty seconds of unforgivable weakness.
I jerked backward to break the contact.
Before I could pull away, his thumb and forefinger caught my lower lip, pinching the swollen flesh with deliberate firmness. He gave a sharp, teasing tug, forcing another hitched gasp from my throat. It was not an act of affection. It was a cold demonstration of dominance, proving that he dictated the beginning, the middle, and the end of every touch between us.
Only when he saw the flicker of helpless agony in my eyes did he let me go.
I scrambled back two steps, putting distance between us. My back hit the polished mahogany paneling of the suite, my chest heaving as I fought to drag air into my starved lungs. My lips throbbed, still wet from his mouth, pulsing with the ghost of his heat.
The alpha stood tall beside the bar cart, unbothered and composed. His tailored suit was barely disturbed, his breathing steady, his posture relaxed. He raised one hand, lazily running the pad of his thumb across his own lower lip as if savoring the remnants of my surrender.
"Still cannot talk?" He asked with a casual smirk.
The truth crashed down on me with brutal clarity.
The kiss was not passion. It was not desire, and it was certainly not an accident. It was a calculated psychological weapon designed to strip me bare and break my spine without throwing a single punch. He had not needed to shout at me like he did with the weeping girl who fled down the hallway. He had dismantled me with a smirk, turning my own weapon and my own body against me.
Tears of pure mortification burned behind my eyelids. I dug my fingernails into my palms until the skin nearly broke, refusing to give him the satisfaction of seeing me cry. I could not speak. If I opened my mouth, a pathetic sob would spill out, and I would rather bleed out on his plush rug than let him hear it.
I did not bend down to retrieve the fallen knife. I could not bear to look at it.
I spun on my heel, grabbed the brass handle of the heavy mahogany door, and wrenched it open. I half-expected his heavy hand to grab my shoulder, to drag me back into his suffocating orbit, but no movement came. His silence was louder than any taunt. He had already won, and he knew it.
I burst out into the dimly lit corridor, the heavy doors clicking shut behind me.
Panic propelled my boots forward. The crimson velvet carpet swallowed the sound of my hurried steps, but the walls felt like they were closing in on me. The air smelled of expensive perfume, aged scotch, and stale cigar smoke, choking my lungs. I kept my head down, wiping the back of my hand across my swollen mouth, desperate to erase his taste, his scent, and the blistering humiliation clinging to my skin.
Tears blurred my vision into smeared streaks of amber wall sconces. I did not look where my feet were carrying me. I only knew I had to get downstairs, out into the cold night rain, and away from Velvet Haven.
I rounded the sharp corner toward the stairs at full speed.
Before I could brace myself, my shoulder slammed hard into a solid chest.
"Ow!"
The force of the collision knocked the breath from my lungs, sending me stumbling backward across the runner. A pair of strong hands caught my upper arms, steadying me before my knees could give out on the carpet.
"Nadia?" A voice broke through the rushing noise in my ears.
The blood in my veins turned to liquid frost. Every nerve in my spine locked rigid.
"What are you doing here?"
My head snapped up, my tear-filled eyes widening in disbelief. Standing tall in the dim glow of the corridor chandeliers, staring down at my disheveled hair, swollen lips, and flushed face, was Corbin.
