The Wight's Awakening

Vesperia's POV

Frost-white hair and bleached irises stared back at me through the cracked surface of the vanity mirror. They were the undeniable, physical proof of my wretched existence. For as long as I could remember, those abnormalities had been the sole reason I spent my life answering to titles like Scourge, Mistake, and Wight. I had accepted the insults without fighting back because, in a pack built entirely on flawless genetics and raw power, I was nothing more than a living curse.

"This yearly assessment isn't a game," my stepmother, Myrna, snapped. She stormed into my cramped bedroom without bothering to knock, her heels clicking sharply against the floorboards. "Alpha Bramwell gave strict orders that every single member is to participate."

She closed the distance between us, leaning in until her voice dropped to a vicious hiss. "Don't think I won't permanently remove you from this house if you ruin this day for me."

Her cruelty was as routine as breathing. After my biological mother died bringing me into the world, my father hadn't wasted a single second in mourning. He married Myrna instead, moving both her and her spiteful daughter, Tamsin, under our roof. The two of them had immediately set to work making my life a waking nightmare, ensuring I never knew a moment of peace.

Tamsin leaned heavily against the wooden doorframe, curling her lip as she looked my small frame up and down.

"Why is she even going?" Tamsin scoffed, crossing her arms over her chest. "She's a defective, wolfless freak who couldn't even track a rotting carcass if it was dropped right on her boots."

She rolled her eyes dramatically, as if my mere presence was an unbearable inconvenience. "Just shift and be normal for once. Is it really that hard?"

"Maybe she doesn't have a wolf at all," Myrna sneered, a malicious little smile playing on her lips. "Considering how incredibly pathetic her dead mother was, it makes perfect sense. Trash breeds trash."

I kept my mouth completely shut, enduring the venom while the old, familiar memories clawed their way to the front of my mind.

A former maid had once confessed the gruesome truth about my birth. My father hadn't even bothered to dig a proper grave for my mother. He simply left her corpse to decay out in the open fields, abandoning me in a crib to cry myself hoarse for weeks until the servants relentlessly begged him to intervene.

All of it was strictly because of my appearance. Utterly white hair and pale oceanic eyes didn't exist anywhere in our pack, nor in any of the surrounding seven kingdoms. I didn't even have a given name until I turned five years old, when that same desperate maid eventually decided to call me Vesperia.

"Your mother was a massive mistake," Myrna had often reminded me throughout my childhood. "And you are nothing but a walking reminder of that mistake."

Myrna grabbed my upper arm, her perfectly manicured nails biting sharply into my skin.

"Do not humiliate me today, Wight," she warned.

The assessment clearing was completely packed. All around me, members of the pack were proudly tearing off their clothes and bursting into massive, heavily muscled wolves, vying to showcase their dominance and improve their ranks. I shrank toward the back edge of the crowd, desperately wishing the earth would open up and swallow me whole.

When my turn was finally called, I hesitated, my worn shoes dragging through the dirt. A hundred pairs of judgmental eyes immediately locked onto me. Myrna's brutal threat rang loudly in my ears.

I squeezed my eyes shut, balled my hands into extremely tight fists, and pushed. I strained against the vast emptiness inside my chest, focusing all my energy inward and praying to the Moon Goddess for even a sliver of power.

Absolutely nothing happened. I just stood there in the center of the grounds, contorting my face like an absolute idiot.

The tense silence of the crowd finally broke. A wave of cruel laughter and harsh whispers swept through the onlookers, vibrating in the open air.

"Even a newborn pup can shift faster than that!" a man yelled loudly from the back of the pack, triggering another massive eruption of mockery.

The heat of profound embarrassment scorched my cheeks. Desperate for a lifeline, I searched the sea of faces for Roderick, the Alpha's handsome son. We had been dating in secret for several months, and I desperately needed just one reassuring glance from him to anchor me in the chaos.

Instead, I found him standing near the front row, completely engrossed in a conversation with his father. He was actively ignoring my public execution, not even sparing me a single passing glance.

The shame became far too suffocating to carry. I shoved my way out of the jeering crowd and broke into a dead sprint away from the main grounds. I didn't stop running until my burning lungs finally brought me to the secluded waterfall at the absolute edge of the territory.

The deafening crash of the water hitting the rocks below and the gentle wash of the moonlight were the only things that usually settled my racing nerves.

I closed my eyes, dragging in deep breaths of the cool mist, trying to brace myself for whatever physical punishment Myrna had waiting for me at home. But then, the fine hairs on my arms violently prickled.

Someone was watching me. We certainly had our fair share of creeps in the pack who liked to spy on women by the water, but this heavy, magnetic energy saturating the air felt completely alien to me.

A sudden, undeniable spark crackled deep inside my core. An intoxicating, rich scent drifted through the damp air, hooking directly into my senses and dragging my body forward like a bee to a flower.

*Mate!*

The single word exploded in my mind with deafening, crystal-clear clarity.

"Mate?" I breathed out into the empty space, my heart pounding heavily in my chest.

*Mate!*

The voice in my head roared again, vibrating through my very soul. It wasn't just a random thought. It was my wolf. After a lifetime of absolute silence and relentless torture, she was finally awake.

My knees buckled underneath me. I dropped heavily to the damp soil, letting overwhelming tears of sheer relief and joy spill over my cheeks without restraint.

The rich scent thickened just as a large, powerful wolf burst through the dense foliage ahead. Without missing a single beat, the beast shifted upright, fluidly taking the form of a tall man with intensely familiar features.

"Roderick!" I cried out in shock.

He let out a low chuckle as I scrambled to my feet. "What's wrong? You look like you've seen a ghost."

I threw myself forward, crashing my body into his solid chest. I buried my face completely into the crook of his neck, greedily inhaling the scent radiating off his skin.

"You're my mate!" I blurted out, the relief washing over me in waves. "I can feel your wolf! My wolf, she's finally awake, and she completely recognizes you!"

Roderick's usually guarded facial features softened into something resembling affection as his golden eyes locked onto mine.

"Didn't I promise you that you were my mate, and that your wolf would wake up soon?" he asked smoothly, his voice thick with apparent emotion. "But I needed you to feel the bond and realize it for yourself."

My chest tightened with an explosive surge of hope and profound joy. I looked up into his face. "Does this mean..." I started, my voice trailing off as hesitation gripped me.

Would he actually announce me to the world? Would his prestigious family and the rest of the pack finally be forced to accept me?

"Tomorrow, I will announce my mate," he murmured tenderly, his intense gaze refusing to waver from mine.

A sudden, sweltering heat flushed violently through my entire body. I let out a foolish, giddy laugh, reaching my hand up to aggressively fan my fiercely burning face.

"What is it?" Roderick asked, feigning a look of mild concern.

"It's nothing, I just feel really hot all of a sudden," I stammered. I was entirely overwhelmed by the intense physical shock of the mating bond locking firmly into place, the realization making me dizzy.

However, the tender affection on Roderick's face rapidly vanished. His expression smoothly twisted into a dark, unsettling grin.

"Is that right?" he whispered, his tone suddenly slick.

He reached out, his fingers roughly sweeping my white hair completely over my shoulder. Before I could process the sudden shift in his demeanor, he leaned his head down, pressing his mouth hard and rough against the sensitive skin of my neck.

A harsh, involuntary shiver racked my spine.

"You are incredibly beautiful," he muttered thickly against my flesh, his hands moving upward to aggressively roam over my trembling body.

For a fleeting fraction of a second, I melted into his touch. No one had ever called me beautiful before, aside from the maid. I wanted to trust him completely.

But as his grip grew significantly tighter and his hands traveled boldly to places they absolutely shouldn't, a frantic alarm bell began ringing loudly in my mind.

The energy radiating off him felt entirely wrong.

"Roder..." I tried to say, my voice shaking with sudden discomfort.

"Shh, shh, it's been officially confirmed by the Goddess that you are my mate," he interrupted dismissively, crowding me backward and pressing his heavy frame solidly against mine. "Don't I have the right to take what belongs to me? Especially after I've waited this long?"

He was using the sacred mating pull as an excuse to justify his forceful actions, but my instincts were screaming in pure terror. I looked up and saw his eyes glassy with sheer, unapologetic lust, completely devoid of any genuine love or emotional connection.

"Roderick, stop," I pleaded, shoving both of my hands firmly against his chest.

I pushed with everything I possessed, fighting desperately to break his tightening grip, but his massive muscular body didn't shift a single inch. Panic fiercely clawed its way up my throat.

Just as I planted my feet firmly into the dirt to physically struggle against his advancing weight, the heavy silence of the night was suddenly shattered. A sharp voice abruptly sliced through the surrounding darkness.

"Roderick, what's going on here?"
