The Secret Son
CASSIA
I stare at the ceiling of my bedroom, the oppressive silence of the house pressing down on my chest like a physical weight. Sleep evades me. I toss and turn in my large bed, tangling my legs in the cold silk sheets. Every time I close my eyes, I see Kendra’s cruel smirk. I hear her confident declaration that she is taking Garrett back. I am tormented by the agonizing reality of her sleeping under the exact same roof as me. My foolish, lingering hopes for Garrett's love feel like fragile glass ready to shatter. I keep telling myself that he is my husband, that we share a life, that my sheer devotion over the past three years must count for something. But the cold, empty space beside me on the mattress mocks my stubborn optimism.
I glance at the digital clock on the nightstand. The red numbers glare in the darkness. It is well past midnight. My throat feels like sandpaper. The stifling air in the bedroom suffocates me, making my pulse race with an unexplainable dread. I need a glass of water. I need to cool the feverish anxiety burning beneath my skin.
I throw off the heavy duvet and plant my bare feet on the chilling hardwood floor. I wrap my silk robe tight around my waist, tying the sash with jerky motions. The hallway outside my door is shrouded in thick shadows. Only a faint, golden glow spills from the kitchen at the far end of the corridor. I walk with silent steps, careful not to wake the guest in the other room.
My breath hitches in my throat. I freeze in my tracks.
Hushed murmurs echo down the corridor. The sounds drift from the dim kitchen area, cutting through the midnight silence. My heart slams against my ribs. I recognize that deep, resonant baritone instantly. It is Garrett. And the soft, urgent voice answering him belongs to Kendra.
I press my back flat against the cold wall. I inch my way forward, creeping toward the edge of the corridor. I peek around the corner, keeping myself hidden in the darkness.
Garrett stands by the marble kitchen island. His broad shoulders are tense, his posture rigid. Kendra stands mere inches away from him, her face tilted up to meet his gaze. There is no trace of the mocking, confident woman who confronted me hours ago. Instead, she wears an expression of desperate urgency.
"You have to tell her the truth, Garrett. My son needs his real father. Do you think you can just keep us hidden away in the dark? Are we just some dirty secret to you? If that is your plan, I am packing my bags and leaving tonight."
Kendra issues her threat with aggressive conviction, her eyes flashing with defiance. The air vanishes from my lungs. A ringing sound starts in my ears, drowning out the ambient hum of the refrigerator.
"Stop doing this, Kendra. You know you cannot take my son away from me."
Garrett reaches out, his large hand wrapping securely around her arm to stop her from turning away. My world shatters into a million jagged pieces. The words echo in my mind on an endless, torturous loop. Micah. The beautiful, bright-eyed two-year-old boy sleeping in the guest room. I thought he was the product of some other relationship Kendra had during her time away. But he is Garrett's. My husband is the father of that child.
My legs turn to dead weight. I clutch the edge of the plaster wall to keep myself from collapsing into a pathetic heap on the floor. A sickening wave of betrayal crashes over me, suffocating my last shred of hope. Garrett kept this from me. He brought his child and his former lover into our home, hiding the ultimate secret right under my nose. I step out of the shadows and walk directly into the harsh kitchen light.
"Is it true? Is that boy yours?" I demand, my voice trembling with profound shock.
Garrett and Kendra snap their heads in my direction. Garrett drops his hand from Kendra's arm as if he has been burned. His jaw tightens, and a flicker of panic flashes in his dark eyes before hardening into a defensive glare.
Kendra shifts gears. The fierce, demanding woman from a second ago vanishes. She shrinks back, pulling her arms around herself. Her eyes widen, swimming with manufactured guilt. She plays the fragile, remorseful victim with terrifying perfection.
"Cassia, I am so sorry. I never meant to cause a scene or ruin your peace. Please pretend none of this happened. I will pack my things right now. We will leave. I am so sorry for bringing this trouble to your door."
Kendra apologizes profusely, her voice wavering with a delicate tremble. My anger erupts into a blinding wildfire. The sheer audacity of her performance makes my blood boil. I remember the vicious, gloating monster she was earlier today. I see right through her brilliant, manipulative acting.
"Get out of my house and bring your bastard son with you!" I snap viciously, unable to contain the venom tearing up my throat.
A sharp, explosive pain erupts across my left cheek.
The impact steals my breath. My head snaps hard to the right. The loud, sickening crack of flesh striking flesh echoes off the kitchen walls. A metallic taste floods my mouth as my teeth cut into my inner lip. My cheek burns with a raw, stinging fire.
Garrett slapped me.
I lift my trembling hand, pressing my fingers to my throbbing face in horrified disbelief. I stare at the man I have loved for years. Garrett stands over me, his chest heaving, his hand still hovering in the air. He has never laid a finger on me before. He has been cold, distant, and indifferent, but he has never resorted to physical violence. And now, he has struck me across the face to defend another woman.
"Don't you dare call my son a bastard. At least Kendra gave me a son. At least she gave me something real."
Garrett spits the words at me, his eyes blazing with protective fury. His tone is laced with lethal venom as he viciously defends the love of his life and their offspring.
"You hit me. You actually hit me." I whisper the words, my vision blurring with hot, stinging tears.
"I am not going to stand here and let you insult my child, Cassia. Yes, Micah is my son."
Garrett drops his hand, his expression turning incredibly icy. He offers no apology for the red mark blooming on my skin.
"How is this possible? When did this happen?" My voice cracks, the monumental weight of the betrayal crushing my chest. I do the math in my head. A two-year-old boy. Nine months of pregnancy.
"Kendra and I slept together right before our wedding. We spent the whole night fucking each other before I stood at that altar with you."
Garrett ruthlessly confesses the ultimate betrayal, his voice steady and devoid of remorse. He uses crude, blunt language, making sure I understand exactly what happened. My stomach heaves. The memory of my wedding day flashes before my eyes. I had been so happy, standing in my white dress, thinking I had finally won his heart. Meanwhile, the scent of Kendra had probably still been lingering on his skin. He had his cock buried inside her just hours before he promised his life to me.
"You cheated on me! You betrayed me before we even started!" I tearfully accuse him, my voice rising to a frantic pitch.
"Technically, we were not married yet. We had not signed the papers. So no, it was not cheating. Besides, you should have known what you were getting yourself into when you forced me into this marriage. You bought me, Cassia. You used your family's money and influence to trap me. You do not get to play the victim now."
Garrett crosses his arms over his chest, his tone unbelievably cruel. I gasp for air, suffocating on the immense injustice of his words. He shows no shred of guilt. He justifies his betrayal with cold logic, blaming me for loving him enough to fight for our union.
Kendra steps smoothly between us. Her eyes glisten with massive, fake tears. She reaches out, placing a gentle hand on Garrett's chest.
"Please, stop fighting. I cannot bear to see you two tear each other apart over me. I will just go. I should have never come back. I do not want to be the reason your marriage falls apart."
Kendra dramatically pleads, her face a mask of innocent sorrow. I want to scream. I want to claw that innocent expression right off her face. Just hours ago, she boldly threatened to take him from me, telling me my time was up. Now she acts like a harmless angel, sacrificing herself for my sake.
"You are not going anywhere, Kendra. Kendra and my son are staying here permanently. This is my house, and they are my family. If you have a problem with it, you know where the door is."
Garrett covers her hand with his, his voice dropping into a firm, immovable register. He looks over her shoulder, meeting my devastated gaze with eyes made of steel. The final thread of my restraint snaps.
"I will not accept this! If she won't leave on her own, I'm going to drag her out myself!" I scream at the top of my lungs, my throat tearing with the force of my rage.
Fueled by pure, unadulterated rage, I lunge forward. My hands stretch out like claws. I bypass Garrett's massive frame and grab a thick handful of Kendra's long hair.
"Ahhh! Garrett!" Kendra shrieks in sudden panic.
I yank backward with all the strength I possess. I forcefully pull her struggling body out of the kitchen and toward the hallway. My blood roars in my ears. The adrenaline numbs every rational thought in my brain. I drag her stumbling figure toward the edge of the massive wooden staircase. I just want her out. I want to throw her out the front door and lock it forever.
"Cassia, let her go! Have you lost your mind?"
Garrett bellows from behind, his heavy footsteps thundering against the floorboards as he chases after us. We reach the very top of the landing. Kendra thrashes wildly against my grip. She twists her body, her hands flying up to claw at my arm. Her sharp nails dig fiercely into the back of my hand. She drags her nails down my skin, tearing through the top layer and drawing a hot streak of blood.
A sharp pain shoots up my arm. My reflex kicks in. I instantly release my tight grip on her hair, yanking my bleeding hand back to my chest. In the next terrifying, slow-motion second, everything goes wrong.
Freed from my hold, Kendra stumbles. Her foot slips on the edge of the polished wooden step. Her eyes widen in genuine terror. She flails her arms, desperately trying to catch her balance. But gravity takes over. She tumbles backward. Her body crashes down the hard wooden stairs. The sickening sound of flesh and bone hitting solid wood echoes through the long hallway.
"No!" I gasp, freezing in sheer horror.
I swear I had let go. But her agonizing, blood-curdling screams aggressively tear through the silent house as she rolls down the steep flight of stairs, finally coming to a crumpled halt at the bottom landing. Garrett races past me in a sheer panic. His shoulder clips mine, nearly sending me over the edge as well. He rushes down the stairs, taking them two at a time. He drops to his knees on the bottom floor, tenderly gathering Kendra's moaning, injured body into his strong arms.
"Kendra! Kendra, look at me. Are you okay?" Garrett strokes her hair, his voice trembling with a frantic terror I have never heard from him before.
"It hurts, Garrett. Everything hurts." Kendra whimpers, clutching her arm, her face twisted in pain.
Garrett turns his head and looks back up at me. I stand frozen at the top of the stairs, clutching my bleeding hand to my chest, my breathing shallow and erratic. His face contorts with pure, unfiltered disgust. A dark, murderous rage radiates from his pores.
"Cassia, what did you do?" he roars, his voice shaking the pictures hanging on the walls.
"I didn't push her! I swear, Garrett, she scratched me and I let go! She slipped!" I desperately scream my defense, leaning over the banister.
My frantic pleas fall on deaf ears.
"You are a monster. You are always manipulating the truth. You never take responsibility for your vicious actions. You dragged her to the stairs!" Garrett cold and mercilessly accuses me, his glare pinning me to the spot.
"I didn't mean for her to fall! You have to believe me!" I sob, the tears finally spilling over my bruised cheeks.
"I can't believe I ever thought I could fix things with you. You are toxic, Cassia. You have ruined everything. If something bad happens to Kendra, I don't know if I'll ever forgive you."
He says the words with a chilling, dead calmness. His voice acts as a massive wall of condemnation that crushes my spirit into dust. Paralyzed by the terrifying, blurring lines of right and wrong, I stand frozen. Did I cause this? Did my rage push her over the edge? The doubt creeps into my mind, poisoning my defense.
Garrett does not wait for another word from me. He scoops Kendra into his arms, holding her tightly against his chest. He kicks the front door open, carrying her out into the dark, freezing night. He does not look back. He does not care that he left his wife bleeding and bruised at the top of the stairs.
The heavy oak door slams shut with a booming thud.
Left alone in the massive, empty hallway, the silence rushes back in to claim the house. My legs give out. My knees hit the hard wood. I sink slowly to the cold floor, curling my body into a tight ball. My chest heaves as uncontrollable sobs tear their way out of my throat. The final remnants of my shattered marriage crash down around me. I sit alone on the floor, weeping into the darkness, realizing that the battle is over, and I have lost everything.
