The Sting of Truth
POV: Clara
He hit me. The brutal force of the strike sent a blinding flash across my vision, leaving my cheek throbbing with white-hot fire. But the physical sting was nothing compared to the true agony ripping straight through my chest. My knees swayed under me, threatening to give out beneath the crushing weight of what had just happened. The man standing before me was the very man who had spent the last five years gently opening car doors for me. He was the man who had cried by my bedside whenever I caught a terrible fever. Now, he had just struck me across the face to shield his male lover.
I looked up through blurred vision. Dominic stood frozen in place. His eyes widened in sudden, panicked realization as he stared down at his own trembling palm.
"Clara... I..."
He choked on his words, stammering my name in horror as the gravity of his actions washed over his features. He took a hesitant step toward me with his hands outstretched, desperate to bridge the gap he had just blown wide open.
"Do not dare touch me, Dominic! Never touch me again!"
I recoiled with a piercing scream, pressing my back against the cold bedroom wall. My lungs grasped for air in short, shallow bursts.
He shrank back as if I had burned him. His handsome face contorted into pathetic guilt. Before he could try again, Kent stepped up right behind him. Kent raised a hand and began casually rubbing Dominic's bare back in an overtly possessive, comforting gesture.
"It is okay, Dominic. I know you did not mean to. You are way too soft for that kind of thing."
Kent sneered, his tone dripping with cruel condescension. The sickening sight of his hand stroking my fiancé's bare skin made my throat tight with bile. I stared at the two of them standing shoulder to shoulder in the bedroom we were supposed to share as husband and wife. They looked like a united front, treating me like an unhinged intruder who had just ruined their peaceful afternoon.
God, it hurt. The betrayal sliced deeper than any knife ever could.
Forcing myself to swallow the suffocating lump in my throat, I squared my shoulders. I locked my eyes directly onto Dominic's guilty gaze. I needed the plain, undeniable truth straight from his mouth.
"I just have one question for you, Dominic. Are you attracted to women, or to me, even in the slightest?"
My voice cracked on the final word, exposing the raw vulnerability I was trying so hard to hide.
Kent let out a harsh scoff, rolling his eyes toward the ceiling.
"Does it really matter?"
I ignored the naked man, keeping my focus locked on the man I thought I was going to marry. Dominic could not bear to hold my gaze. His head dropped toward the hardwood floor, his shoulders slumping in defeat.
"I am sorry."
A hollow apology slipped from his lips. That single, pathetic admission confirmed the worst nightmare of my life. My knees buckled beneath the immense weight of five wasted years. The man I loved, the man I was preparing to vow my life to, desired men. He had never harbored an ounce of genuine physical desire for me.
"Why? Why would you do this to me? Why did you lead me on for half a decade? If you desire men, why did you weave such an elaborate web of romance and pretend to love me?!"
I cried out, demanding an answer that made sense.
"I am sorry, Clara."
He repeated the useless phrase, keeping his eyes glued to his bare feet like a scolded child.
"Stop giving me apologies! Answer the damn question, Dominic!"
I screamed the words, my voice hardening into unyielding steel.
"You know our parents want us to get married. When my family found out I liked men, they were furious. My parents refused to accept a gay son. They wanted someone normal. They forced me into this engagement, Clara. They operated under the delusion that marriage would fix it. They thought a pure, sweet woman like you could cure me. I did not mean to hurt you."
Dominic desperately tried to deflect the blame onto his conservative family, his voice dropping to a low, pleading murmur.
"Cut the excuses, Dominic."
I snapped at him, disgusted by his sheer cowardice. He flinched at my sharp tone. He was used to the sweet, innocent girl who nodded along to his every word. He had never seen me pushed to the brink of my sanity.
"Do you actually expect me to feel pity for you right now? After everything you have done to me? You used me. I was just a convenient, straight cover bride to make you look good for your parents. And I loved you. I loved you despite your coldness. I loved you despite how distant and disconnected you always felt in the bedroom. I blamed your stress, your work, anything to justify it. But you played me from the very start."
Fresh tears spilled over my eyelashes, but I wiped them away with the back of my hand.
"If you had just told me the truth when we met, I would have understood. I would have supported you as an ally. But instead, you chose to lie. You let me fall in love with you and believe we had a real future. Do not make your parents the only villains here. You are one too. I refuse to let you hide your infidelity and betrayal behind your sexual identity!"
My voice echoed off the bedroom walls, firm and unshakable.
"I really am sorry, Clara."
Dominic whispered to the floor, unable to offer anything but pathetic remorse.
"Keep it. I have no use for your apologies."
I looked down at my left hand. Reaching over with shaking fingers, I gripped the diamond engagement ring. It was the same ring he had slipped onto my finger under the starry sky, the same ring I had sworn through happy tears never to remove. Now, the metal felt like it was burning a hole straight through my skin.
I pulled the diamond off my finger and hurled the heavy metal directly at his bare feet. It hit the floorboards with a sharp, definitive clink.
"Our relationship is over, Dominic. I want nothing to do with a scumbag like you or your trashy family ever again."
Dominic looked genuinely panicked for the first time. He rushed forward, his eyes darting between me and the discarded ring.
"You cannot do that, Clara! You cannot simply walk away. I know you are angry, but this is a sacred business arrangement tied between our two prominent families. You know the stakes. Our parents—"
A bitter, empty laugh tore from my chest. His transactional mindset was finally laid bare for me to see. It was never about love. It was just a corporate merger, and I was the sacrificial lamb to seal the deal.
"You and your precious business deal can rot in hell. Go find someone else willing to sell their soul for your lie. I am done playing this pathetic role."
I stared right into his panic-stricken eyes, letting him see the pure disgust radiating from mine.
"Seeing you makes me sick. I harbor profound regret for ever loving you."
Without waiting for another word of deception to spill from his mouth, I spun on my heel. I walked out of the house, leaving behind the shiny diamond ring, the five-day countdown to a sham wedding, and the man who had never cared for me at all.
