Birthday Betrayal

Noelle's POV

The heavy double doors of the master suite gave way beneath my hand with a quiet click. I stepped into the room, expecting to find the usual whirlwind that accompanied my mother before major social gatherings. Tonight marked my stepfather’s forty-fifth birthday, a celebration that had cost hundreds of thousands of dollars to orchestrate, with prominent corporate leaders and politicians already arriving through the front gates. I assumed my mother would be fussing over jewel-toned gowns or supervising hair stylists. Instead, the bedroom was dead silent except for the harsh rasp of a heavy metal zipper.

Two matching leather suitcases rested side by side near the entrance, locked and ready for travel. Standing by the marble vanity, my mother swept a heavy dusting of bronzer across her cheekbones. Her face was painted with extreme care—dark, dramatic eyeliner, sculpted brows, and a deep wine lipstick that commanded attention. She had already dressed in a sharp designer traveling suit, her diamond rings catching the light with every flick of her wrist.

I shut the door behind me and walked forward, staring at the packed bags in disbelief. "Mom? What is all this?"

She caught my reflection in the mirror and offered a faint, practiced smile. "Hello, sweetie."

I pointed directly at the luggage sitting near her feet. "Are you packing for a trip with Dad after the party ends?"

My mother let out a light laugh, pressing her lips together to inspect her lipstick. "With your father? No, of course not. I am traveling out of the city tonight."

"Out of the city? Tonight? Have you forgotten what night it is? Dad's forty-fifth birthday celebration is starting downstairs in less than an hour." A knot formed in my stomach as I spoke.

She set her makeup brush onto the glass tray, picked up her designer handbag, and began sorting through her passport and cards. "Lower your voice, Noelle. I am well aware of the date."

I stepped into her path, stopping her from moving past the dressing table. "Then how can you leave? You are supposed to host this gala by his side. There are over two hundred guests arriving at our estate. Aren't you going to greet them?"

Her smile widened, cool and carefree as she reached out to pat my cheek. "That is why I have you, darling. I know you will handle everything without a hitch."

I pulled back from her fingers, my frustration boiling over. "I don't understand why you are doing this. Can't you reschedule the trip? It's his forty-fifth birthday, Mom. You know how important appearances are to him and the board. Is your trip really so urgent that it can't wait until tomorrow?"

She grabbed the handles of her suitcases, rolling them toward the double doors. I rushed after her, keeping pace as she entered the long hallway. "Mom, please talk to me. Can't you reschedule this for another day?"

She stopped at the top of the grand staircase, turning around to face me. The warm maternal mask vanished, replaced by an expression that was sharp and unyielding. "I cannot reschedule. An old classmate reached out, and we agreed to meet up. It has been years since I last saw him, and I am not missing this chance."

"Him? An old male classmate?" The word hit me like a slap.

Her eyes narrowed as she leaned in, her voice dropping into a stern command. "You will not breathe a word of this to your father. Do you understand me? If he asks where I went, tell him Grandmama took ill and I had to travel out of town to look after her."

"You are sneaking off to meet another man on Dad's birthday, and you expect me to lie to his face?" I frowned, staring at her in shock.

"You will do as I say!" Her voice cracked like a whip.

Without waiting for my response, she gripped her bags and started down the wide marble staircase.

I hurried down after her, my heels clicking sharply against the stone. "How long do you plan on staying with him?"

My mother cast a brief glance over her shoulder and offered a wicked wink. "I have no idea. Whenever he releases me, that is when I will return. It could be three days, it could be a week, or perhaps a month. It all depends on how things go."

We reached the ground floor, and she pushed through the service corridor leading to the private garage. Her personal driver was already waiting beside a sleek black Maybach. The moment he spotted her, he rushed forward, took the heavy luggage from her hands, and loaded both bags into the trunk. He hurried back to pull open the rear door for her.

She climbed into the plush leather interior. I stepped up to the open window, resting my hands against the frame. "Mom, please reconsider this. I am not trying to police your social life, but Dad will be lonely without you tonight. The whole city will notice your absence."

She adjusted the collar of her jacket, leaning back against the headrest. "He has you to stand in for me, doesn't he? Don't worry, I will text him a birthday message later. I will make sure he doesn't miss me too much."

"Did you at least leave him a gift? Did you prepare anything for him?" I asked, looking through the glass.

She blinked at me, her lips pursing into a pout just as the engine purred to life. "A gift? Is that even necessary? What could I buy for a man who already owns half the skyline?"

"Mom, that isn't the point." I started to respond, but the heavy car was already rolling forward.

She waved her manicured fingers through the opening as the Maybach accelerated. "Goodbye, sweetie! I will see you whenever I get back!"

The tinted glass slid shut, and the car vanished down the private drive, leaving behind nothing but the faint scent of gardenia perfume and exhaust fumes.

I stood in the cool air of the garage, disappointment weighing heavily on my shoulders. Ever since she married my stepfather two years ago, I had hoped she would abandon her wild, selfish habits. Instead, she had simply found a wealthier patron to finance her escapades, leaving me to clean up the mess every single time.

There was no time to dwell on it now. Guests were filling the lower rooms, and the burden of hosting the event now rested on my shoulders. I had to pull myself together and represent our family.

I rushed back up to my bedroom, washed my face, and pulled on a strapless yellow dress. The silk fabric fell neatly, ending just above my knees, bright and elegant without being overly formal. I stepped into my heels and emerged from the walk-in closet, only to find my closest friend, Valerie, sprawled on the mattress. She was flipping through a thick glossy fashion magazine, looking relaxed and chic in a deep navy gown.

I stopped near the foot of the bed and spun around in a circle. "How does the dress look? Is it appropriate for tonight?"

"Is it terrible?" I asked, feeling a wave of self-doubt creep in.

Valerie set the magazine aside, walking over to inspect me. "No, the dress is gorgeous. But why is your hair still pulled up in a tight ponytail? You need to let it down. Soft waves over your bare shoulders frame your neck so much better. Sit down at the vanity, let me help you fix it."

"Thank you. My head is spinning from all the chaos." I dropped onto the cushioned stool, grateful for her help.

She unpinned my hair, letting the dark strands spill across my shoulders. With practiced ease, she picked up a styling brush and curling wand, shaping the ends into loose, glossy waves that fell softly around my collarbones.

Valerie stepped back to admire her work in the mirror. "There, much better."

I smiled up at her through the glass. "Thank you so much. Let's head down now. I need to greet the guests, and I also need to find out if Kael made it through the estate gates."

Valerie picked up a compact from the table. "He made it. We actually arrived together."

I turned my head toward her, slightly surprised. "You did?"

Valerie set the compact down. "Yes, we ran into each other near the security gate, so I escorted him inside. Since this is only his second time visiting the estate, he seemed a bit overwhelmed. I gave him a quick tour of the grounds so he wouldn't get lost."

"Valerie, you are wonderful." I smiled and blew her a grateful kiss, already rising to my feet. "I need to go see him right now. I've missed him so much."

I rushed out of the bedroom, gathered the hem of my dress, and hurried down the grand staircase. The ballroom was alive with music and conversation. Crystal chandeliers threw brilliant light over hundreds of well-dressed attendees, while servers moved seamlessly through the crowd with trays of vintage champagne and delicate hors d'oeuvres.

Near the center of the hall, my stepfather stood surrounded by several prominent business partners. He held a glass of champagne, sharing a laugh with an oil magnate. As I moved along the perimeter, his sharp eyes met mine across the room. He gave me a single, approving nod, acknowledging my presence. I bowed my head with quiet respect before shifting my attention toward the entrance.

My eyes scanned the crowd, and within seconds, I spotted Kael standing near the archway leading to the terrace. He wore a crisp dark suit that suited him well, though he looked slightly out of place among the older billionaires.

Excitement took over, and I moved swiftly through the room until I was right behind him. I reached out and tapped his shoulder playfully.

Kael flinched, his body tensing before he spun around to face me.

"Surprise!" I called out playfully, spreading my arms wide.

His tense expression vanished instantly. Kael stepped forward and pulled me into an intense embrace, his voice thick with emotion. "I missed you so much, baby."

"I missed you too." I answered softly, leaning into his warmth.

He eased his hold just enough to look down into my face. Leaning forward, he pressed a firm kiss to my lips, followed by a second, and then a third, before pulling me tight against his chest once more.

I closed my eyes, letting the comfort of his arms wash away the stress of my mother's departure.

"There you are." Valerie's voice cut through the ambient noise, breaking the moment.

We parted from the hug and turned toward her.

I smiled at her warmly. "Hey, Valerie."

Kael cleared his throat, running a hand over the lapel of his jacket. "Hey."

I looked at Kael with a fond grin. "Valerie told me you two arrived together."

Kael offered a quick nod. "Yeah, she was kind enough to show me around the estate."

"I'm sorry I couldn't greet you at the door or return your calls earlier. I was swamped with arrangements all afternoon." I touched his sleeve apologetically.

"It's fine, really. You don't need to apologize." Kael said with a gentle smile.

Valerie stepped closer, lightly touching my forearm to draw my attention. "Noelle, you might want to head over to the west lounge area. I think a waiter just spilled a tray of drinks all over an important guest, and a crowd is starting to form."

"Oh no, let me deal with that right away." I murmured, my eyes widening.

I turned back to Kael, giving his hand a quick squeeze. "Wait right here for me, okay? I will be right back."

"Take your time. I'll wait right here." Kael said with a nod.

I gathered my skirt and made my way briskly across the ballroom. When I reached the scene, the situation turned out to be far less severe than Valerie had suggested. The waiter had already apologized profusely, and the guest had graciously accepted the apology. Still, to maintain our family's reputation, I offered another sincere apology on behalf of the hosts and arranged for staff to bring the guest a fresh drink and a clean jacket from the coatroom.

With the minor crisis averted and order restored, I turned back toward the entrance archway.

I expected to see Kael waiting patiently where I had left him, perhaps chatting with Valerie.

Instead, the space was empty.

I stopped walking, scanning the immediate area with rising bewilderment. The spot near the terrace doors was vacant. Guests mingled nearby, but neither my boyfriend nor my best friend remained in sight.

A sudden chill crept over my skin. They had been standing right there less than three minutes ago.

Where did they go?

What could have made both of them vanish so quickly?
