A Calculated Move

Exhausted to her bones from the long international flight, Valerie sat on the edge of her mattress and stared at the glowing screen of her phone. The dim light of her bedroom cast long shadows across the floor. Her banking app loaded. The screen displayed a comfortable cushion of over seven million dollars. She let out a shaky breath, but the tight knot in her chest refused to loosen.

The visceral memories of her past life clawed at her throat. She remembered the suffocating weight of poverty. In her previous life, she had lost everything. She had scraped around for loose change in the freezing cold, begged former friends for loans, and endured the sneers of debt collectors. She had failed to borrow a single cent to save her dying family. The phantom sensation of an empty stomach and freezing nights made her grip the phone tighter. The money sitting in her account was a buffer, but it was not enough. She needed ironclad security to protect her family against Desmond’s inevitable onslaught.

She made her decision in the quiet dark. She would start working at the Ellsworth Group the very next morning. She needed to weed out the two-faced, corrupt employees who had directly caused the company’s tragic downfall in her previous life.

The next morning, golden sunlight flooded the dining room. The scent of fresh coffee and toasted bread filled the air. Richard paused mid-bite, his fork hovering over his plate of eggs. He looked across the table at his daughter. Valerie sat tall, dressed in a crisp white suit that radiated quiet authority.

"Christmas is only two months away. Why don't you start after the holidays and get some proper rest?" Richard asked.

Valerie met his gaze. Her eyes were sharp and unyielding. She did not have the luxury of time.

"Dad, I want to get used to the work environment first." Valerie replied.

Richard set his cup down with a clink. He stared at her, assessing her sudden drive. He picked up his napkin and wiped his mouth.

"Since you want to make something of yourself, I cannot say no. What position do you want, Val?" Richard smiled.

"I want to be your secretary, Dad." Valerie stated without a second of hesitation.

Richard raised his eyebrows. He had assumed she would want a cushy management title or an easy placement under her brother's wing. Most girls in their social circle despised the grueling demands of working directly under their strict fathers.

"Just a secretary? Not your brother's secretary, but mine? Are you sure?" Richard pressed.

"I am certain. I want to work directly under you." Valerie nodded.

She needed unfettered access to the highest level of corporate data. Nolan would coddle her and shield her from the brutal realities of the business. Richard would give her the raw, unfiltered truth of the company's inner workings.

Nolan looked up from his breakfast, feigning a look of betrayal.

"I need a secretary too, you know." Nolan grumbled.

"You already have two assistants." Valerie shot back, exchanging a quick smile with her father.

Richard leaned back in his chair, maintaining a strict demeanor.

"Okay, you will be my secretary. Let me make one thing clear. I am not as easygoing as your brother. Starting today, you will go to work and come home with him. Let us see how long you can last." Richard warned her.

Diana watched the banter flow across the table. A warming sense of maternal pride swelled in her chest. Her son and daughter were healthy, grounded, and untainted by the toxic arrogance that plagued most wealthy families. They were her greatest achievement in life.

"I wonder if you will be okay with the cafeteria food." Diana sighed with a gentle smile.

"Mom, I will be there. Do you think I would let Val go hungry?" Nolan rolled his eyes playfully.

Valerie fell silent. She gripped her silver fork, feeling the cool metal press into her palm. She looked at her living, breathing, loving family. She silently vowed to the universe to protect this fragile happiness at all costs. She would crush anyone who tried to take it away.

An hour later, Valerie slid into the passenger seat of Nolan’s sleek sports car. The drive to the corporate office was smooth. The city skyline blurred past the tinted window, but the silence inside the cabin felt heavy. Nolan gripped the leather steering wheel. He inevitably brought up the elephant in the room.

"While you were gone these past months, Desmond and Vanessa got together." Nolan let out a heavy sigh, keeping his eyes on the road. "Mom and Dad are acting like they do not know, and their side has not said anything either. Desmond is probably not having an easy time. His parents must be pretty against it in private, considering Vanessa's background."

Valerie stared out the window. The mention of Desmond's name brought no tears to her eyes. It brought no tightness to her chest. She felt chillingly calm. The Bancrofts were quietly ignoring the scandalous situation, hoping it would blow over. They expected her to throw a fit, fight for her territory, and act the part of the hysterical fiancée. In her past life, she had done exactly that. She had fought Vanessa until everything became a public, ugly mess. It had pushed Desmond away and given him the perfect excuse to ruthlessly destroy the Ellsworth Group.

She would not make the same mistake twice. She had made the firm decision to step aside. As for that night at the motel, she would swallow the bitter resentment and use it as fuel. She would strategically ensure Desmond had no leverage to ruin her family this time around.

"I want to break off the engagement and return the ring they gave me." Valerie stated.

Nolan shifted his foot on the pedal. He reached over the center console and tightly held her hand. His grip was warm and solid.

"I am with you. I only hope you can move on soon." Nolan squeezed her fingers, offering his full support for her mature decision.

The Ellsworth Group headquarters towered into the morning sky. Valerie followed Nolan through the glass double doors and stepped onto the bustling office floor. Phones rang in the distance. The sharp clatter of keyboards filled the massive open-plan space. As soon as the nearby employees noticed Nolan, they stood up to greet him. Then, their eyes shifted to the stunning woman walking right behind him. The chaotic noise of the office died down to a hushed murmur.

"We have got a new face joining us today." Nolan smiled, standing tall beside his sister.

"Hi, everyone. I am Valerie Ellsworth, the new secretary to the chairman. I am glad to work with you." Valerie smiled politely, scanning the room.

The realization hit the employees instantly. This was the chairman's daughter. A wave of sycophantic warmth washed over the crowd. They quickly flocked to her, showering her with eager introductions and wide smiles.

"Hello, Ms. Ellsworth. I am Mr. Ellsworth's assistant." The female employee sitting closest to the entrance beamed.

The others lined up, eagerly stating their names and departments. Valerie kept a pleasant smile plastered on her face as she shook hand after hand.

Then, a middle-aged man with thick glasses stepped forward.

"Clyde Dunn, Investment Department. Welcome aboard, Ms. Ellsworth." He extended his hand.

Valerie grabbed his palm. His handshake was overly firm. A sickening pause washed over her. She stared into his smiling eyes and remembered exactly what he did in the future. He was one of the key traitors. He was the snake who would smile to their faces while secretly funneling Ellsworth Group's confidential data straight to their enemies. Her stomach churned with cold disgust, but she did not let her mask slip. She released his hand smoothly and gave a curt nod.

Nolan patted her on the shoulder.

"Work hard." Nolan said before walking off toward his own suite.

Valerie wasted no time on further pleasantries with the flocking crowd. She turned on her heel and marched straight down the corridor toward the HR department. She pushed the glass door open and walked right up to the HR manager’s desk. She pulled out a meticulously prepared piece of paper from her blazer pocket and slapped it down onto the polished wood.

Written on the paper were the names of four heavy-hitting engineers. These four geniuses were destined to become the Bancroft Group's future golden stars. They were the brilliant minds that would secure Desmond's technological dominance in the coming years. She was going to intercept them.

"If these four people come in for interviews, make sure you keep them with a high salary. If the company will not approve the pay, I will cover it entirely myself." Valerie aggressively instructed the baffled manager.

Her tone left zero room for negotiation.

"Got it, Ms. Ellsworth." The HR manager froze for a second before nodding furiously, intimidated by her sharp authority.

Later that afternoon, Valerie settled into her new office located right next to the chairman's suite. The space was sleek, filled with dark mahogany furniture and large windows overlooking the sprawling city below. She spent hours organizing files, familiarizing herself with the company's current active projects, and cross-referencing names with her memories of the past timeline. The sun began to dip lower in the sky, casting long orange shadows across her desk.

Her phone screen suddenly lit up. The harsh buzzing shattered the quiet focus of her office. Miriam Bancroft’s name flashed on the caller ID.

Valerie stared at the screen. She felt a brief spike of cold irritation. Desmond's mother was the last person she wanted to speak with, but ignoring the call would only prompt Miriam to dig deeper into her business. Valerie swiped the screen and brought the phone to her ear.

"Val, your dad said you are back home already? Are you free tonight? Come over for dinner, alright?" Miriam’s voice trickled through the speaker with faux sweetness.

Valerie recognized the underlying tone immediately. It was the tone of a woman trying to maintain appearances, pretending the scandalous rumors about her son were just trivial nonsense. Miriam wanted to parade Valerie around their dining table to secure the business alliance, all while letting Desmond do whatever he pleased behind closed doors. Valerie refused to play the game anymore. She was formally setting the gears in motion to return that heirloom ring.

"I am sorry, Mrs. Bancroft. May I visit you another day?" Valerie declined the invitation with a polite but firm tone.

"Oh. I... I see." Miriam stammered.

She had clearly expected Valerie to jump at the chance to visit after being away for so long. The shock in the older woman's voice was palpable. Miriam quickly recovered her haughty composure.

"I heard you have joined Ellsworth Group. Work hard. I have got faith in you." Miriam added stiffly.

The line went dead. Miriam had abruptly hung up.

Valerie lowered the phone. She sat in total silence for a long moment, staring at her darkened screen. The reflection of her own cold, determined eyes stared back at her. Returning the ring meant facing the Bancrofts on her own terms, not being summoned to their dinner table like an obedient dog. She needed the stage set perfectly.

She unlocked her phone and deliberately dialed Sabrina's number.

"Hey, are you free for dinner tonight? Actually, I would like a huge favor from you." Valerie spoke the moment her friend answered the call.

A calculated plan was already fully formed in her mind.
