Silent Plea

Harper lunged forward and locked both hands around Gunner’s harness, hauling his heavy frame away from the window sill with a single heave. The three veterinary technicians stumbled backward onto the floor, panting with exhaustion as the window slammed shut and latched tight. Gunner slumped into an aggrieved pile against the baseboard, burying his muzzle deep beneath his front paws while letting out a series of low, pathetic wheezes. He glared at every white coat in sight, his brown eyes filled with theatrical tragedy over the square patch shaved into his crown.

Harper knelt beside him and gently scratched behind his pointed ears. "The doctor only took a tiny patch to treat your skin. It will grow back before you know it."

Gunner turned his head away in an exaggerated snub, muttering miserable complaints inside her mind about his ruined social standing and the intolerable draft touching his exposed scalp.

Harper kept her voice gentle and persuasive. "If you stand up like a good boy, I will let you pick out five designer sweaters on my tablet tonight. We can order custom coats, leather collars, and a cashmere hoodie to cover your head until your fur returns."

Gunner’s ears flicked upward. He lifted his massive head, offering a tentative huff that signaled his wounded vanity could be negotiated with luxury apparel. He scrambled to his feet, sticking close to her hip while ignoring the grinning clinic staff.

Harper guided him down the corridor to the reception counter to settle the account. Her recent work contracts had padded her savings comfortably, despite the constant online slander surrounding her family drama. After clearing the diagnostic fees, she pulled out a gold card and transferred a seventy-thousand-dollar donation directly into the hospital’s stray rescue fund. The receptionist stared at the transaction receipt with wide eyes, stammering out profuse gratitude. Harper offered a polite nod and fastened Gunner’s leather leash onto his collar, preparing to step toward the parking lot.

The clinic’s double glass doors banged open before she could reach the threshold.

A young woman stumbled inside, sobbing with sheer terror as she cradled a limp border collie bundled in blood-stained bath towels. A tall young man followed two paces behind her, his hands jammed into his jacket pockets and his jaw set in an irritated scowl.

The young woman cried out toward the front desk. "Please help her! She has been bleeding all morning and she will not stand!"

Beneath the woman's panicked screams and the dog's ragged wheezing, a tiny, raspy voice scraped across Harper's consciousness.

*Mommy, please... Mommy, do not let him touch you. Stay far away from that bad man.*

Harper froze in her tracks, her hand tightening around Gunner’s leash. She spun around and walked back toward the triage table where two technicians were easing the trembling collie onto a steel gurney. The dog’s white and black coat was matted with crimson stains around its hindquarters, its eyes cloudy and sinking into its skull. The young woman leaned over the metal edge, clutching her own hair in despair.

Tessa wiped her red-rimmed eyes with the back of her trembling wrist. "She could not pass stool for a week. I assumed it was simple constipation from eating grass. But then she stopped playing yesterday, and this morning there was so much blood. Please save her."

Roxy gave a long, mournful shudder. The collie strained to lift its head toward Tessa, letting out a sharp whimper that carried an unbearable weight of grief. It sounded like a final farewell from an animal that knew its body was failing.

Harper stepped beside the gurney and laid two fingers across the dog’s forehead. A faint golden warmth pulsed through her fingertips, bridging the mental link between them.

Roxy blinked through the haze of agony, her clouded pupils dilating as she sensed Harper's presence. *You hear me? You can actually understand my voice?*

Harper kept her voice low enough that only the dying animal could catch her tone. "I hear you, little one. Tell me what happened to you."

A surge of sorrow and raw fury washed through the psychic tether. Roxy pushed through the stabbing agony in her gut, her mental voice trembling with desperate urgency.

*The man beside Mommy is an evil beast. Whenever Mommy leaves for the office, he brings strange women into our home. They laugh and make terrible noises on the bed. When I tried to bark at them, he beat me with a broom handle. Last week, he and a woman held me down on the kitchen tiles. They wrapped heavy tape around my snout and my paws so I could not bite or kick. Then they stuck needles into me. They pushed metal sewing needles under my skin and crammed them into my tongue and throat.*

Roxy’s body shuddered as fresh tears leaked from the corners of her eyes, dampening Harper’s sleeve. *I am dying, Miss. I know I cannot live much longer. But please save my Mommy. Do not let that monster hurt her when I am gone.*

Harper's blood turned to ice. She lowered her hand from the dog's head, running her palm down Roxy’s throat, across her ribcage, and over the distended belly. Beneath the soft underbelly fur, Harper’s fingertips pressed against distinct, rigid metal shafts buried deep inside the muscle tissue. Roxy whimpered in pain at the light pressure.

Before Harper could speak, a heavy hand grabbed her shoulder and jerked her backward.

The boyfriend glared at Harper, his face twisted in disgust. "What the hell do you think you are doing? Keep your hands off our dog! She has bowel blockage and you are poking her stomach like an idiot!"

Gunner reacted in a fraction of a second.

The husky sprang forward, launching off his hind legs and slamming his broad chest straight into the man’s sternum. The impact drove the man backward across the slick clinic tiles, sending him crashing flat on his back. Before he could scramble upward, Gunner had his massive front paws planted on the man’s shoulders, baring two rows of razor-sharp fangs inches from his throat while letting out a guttural, earth-shaking growl.

The triage room fell into stunned silence.

The boyfriend lay pinned beneath the dog, his face pale as chalk while his hands hovered in the air. "Get this rabid beast off me! Call security!"

Harper ignored the thrashing man completely. She looked directly into Tessa’s eyes, her voice ringing with cold certainty. "Your dog does not have constipation. She has dozens of foreign metal objects lodged inside her body from horrific physical torture. You need to call the police immediately."

Tessa stared at Harper, her breath catching in her throat. "What are you talking about? Foreign objects?"

The boyfriend shouted from beneath Gunner’s paws, spittle flying from his lips. "She is a lunatic, Tessa! Do not listen to this freak! Tessa and I have been together for three years! She is always working and I am the one who takes care of Roxy! If I wanted to hurt our dog, why would I wait until now? Make her pull this beast off me!"

Tessa glanced between the man on the floor and the stranger who stood beside Roxy with steady, unwavering eyes. She remembered how Roxy had flinched away from her boyfriend earlier that morning, curling into a defensive ball whenever he approached the dog bed. She had noticed strange bruises before, but her boyfriend had always brushed them off as clumsy accidents.

Tessa turned toward the attending veterinarian with raw determination in her voice. "Put her through the radiograph machine right now. Run a full-body scan from head to tail."

The vet nodded grimly and signaled the assistants. They wheeled the gurney into the radiography suite, with Harper walking alongside to keep Roxy calm through their mental link. Gunner maintained his guard until clinic staff escorted the cursing boyfriend to a bench under the receptionist’s watchful eye.

Five minutes later, the lead veterinarian mounted the luminous scans onto the viewing lightboard in the consultation room.

A collective gasp rippled across the room.

Dozens of slender, bright white needles illuminated the dark film, crisscrossing through Roxy’s throat, stomach wall, and pelvic tissues like miniature spikes. Near the chest cavity, two older rib fractures were visible, healed poorly and misaligned from previous blunt trauma.

The veterinarian’s knuckles turned white against the edge of the desk. "This is intentional cruelty. Someone forced sewing needles into her digestive tract and beneath the skin. Her intestines are perforated, which caused the internal bleeding. She has also suffered multiple bone fractures over several months."

Tessa stood frozen, the blood draining from her face until she looked like a ghost. The silence hung heavy in the air for three agonizing seconds before she spun around and swung her right arm with all the force in her body.

The slap cracked like a gunshot across the boyfriend’s cheek, whipping his head to the side.

The man clutched his burning face, stumbling backward against the wall. "Are you crazy? You hit me over this?"

Tessa's voice trembled with pure, unadulterated venom. "Every single time she limped, you told me she slipped on the rug. Every time she whined, you claimed she ate bad grass. You kept me from taking her to the clinic because you knew what they would find inside her. You disgusting monster, we are done!"

Harper stepped forward, folding her arms across her chest. "Roxy took those beatings while trying to defend your home. She told me he brings other women into your apartment during your shifts. When Roxy barked at his lovers, he taped her mouth shut and shoved those needles into her palate."

The man’s eyes widened with panicked desperation, and he sneered at Tessa. "Are you really buying this garbage? Listen to her! She is claiming she speaks to animals! You are going to throw away a three-year relationship because a crazy woman talks to dogs?"

Tessa’s expression hardened into pure glacial contempt, her tears drying under the heat of her disgust. "You think I have no proof? I suspected you were hiding something, so I installed a hidden security camera behind the bookshelf in the living room last week. Every single thing you did in that apartment is saved on the cloud. Let us see how smart you act when the police watch the footage."
