She couldn’t remember if she said it out loud, or just thought it hard enough to count, but Dan responded anyway. He kissed her until she forgot her own name, then pulled back just enough to look her in the eyes. His forehead pressed to hers, his breathing uneven, their lips close enough for the air to buzz between them.

“You can say no,” he whispered.

She choked on her answer, her tongue thick, h
