Nolan’s mother’s face was drained of color. Her lips parted, then pressed together tightly. For the first time since I’d known her, she had nothing to say.

She didn’t argue. Didn’t scoff. Didn’t throw another insult.

She simply turned on her heel and walked away.

My knees felt weak. I let out a breath I hadn’t realized I was holding and looked at Kellan’s mother, my voice trembling des
