The Power Dynamics

Audrey arched a brow, her gaze sweeping over the young woman. She took in the rushed posture and the massive iced coffee shaking in Lila's grip.

"So you are the finance manager."

Lila offered a quick smile and nodded. "That is me. If you need anything at all, just say the word. Mr. Sterling is tied up in a meeting right now, but do not worry. I will make sure to relay whatever message you have."

Audrey let out a soft laugh. "There is no need for that. I am not looking for Gideon. I am here to see you."

Lila let her smile falter for a fraction of a second before recovering. Her tone shifted, softening into a gentle, patronizing cadence.

"Mrs. Sterling, I get that you are still bothered by what went down at the auction last night. But there is no reason to be so worked up about my connection to Mr. Sterling. After all, I am already married, and things are great between me and my husband."

Lila lifted her left hand. The diamond ring on her finger glinted under the harsh fluorescent lights. She paired the gesture with a bashful grin.

Audrey locked onto the ring. Her breath hitched. The irony tasted like ash in her mouth. In this twisted, agonizing reality, the actual wife was cast as the paranoid, invading mistress. The diamond glaring back at her was an exact replica of the one Gideon had presented during his proposal to her.

Audrey broke her stare. "It is a lovely ring, but you are mistaken. I am just here to grab the latest financial report from you. That is all."

She caught the souring of Lila's expression and smiled to herself.

"It seems like you are the one on edge here, Ms. Barton."

Lila lost the smug spark in her eyes. Her face went blank as she bit her lip, grasping for a response.

Audrey maintained her pristine poise. "Do I need to repeat my request, Ms. Barton?"

The office door burst open. Gideon stormed in, his expression darkening the moment he saw the two women facing each other.

"Audrey, wasn't the scene from last night enough? How long are you planning to drag this out? I have told you already. There is nothing going on between me and Lila. If you do not believe me, tell me what it takes."

Audrey leveled a frosty stare at Lila.

"Oh, I believe you. I believe you because Ms. Barton is already married. She just mentioned it herself."

The statement slammed into the room. Lila's face drained of color. Gideon's jaw went slack, his skin turning a sickly pale as he shot Lila a withering glare. Tears instantly sprang to Lila's eyes as she shrank back.

Audrey had zero interest in their pathetic drama. "I am here for this year's financials. I hold forty percent of the company. I have the right to access those records."

Gideon exhaled a choppy breath and nodded. "Of course you can."

He barked an order at a hovering secretary to fetch the documents immediately. As they waited, he stole wary glances at Audrey's face, trying to read her mood. When he decided she wasn't hiding any ulterior motives, his tight shoulders dropped.

"Audrey, what is with the sudden interest? You have never bothered with company matters before," Gideon asked.

"After the account freeze last night, I decided it is smarter to set up a separate one."

Gideon flinched. "Audrey..."

The secretary rushed in and handed over the thick binder. Audrey brushed past Gideon, ignoring him to skim the first few pages. She spun on her heel and headed for the door.

Gideon lunged, catching her by the wrist.

"Audrey, about the family dinner tonight. Are you coming home with me?" His tone held a desperate, pleading edge. He needed her compliance to prove she hadn't uncovered his web of lies.

Audrey let her arm hang slack and kept her eyes on the hallway. "Sure."

Gideon brightened. "Great. I will swing by after work to pick you up."

Audrey masked the icy detachment pooling in her chest. She had one specific reason for stepping foot in the Sterling estate tonight. The marriage license they supposedly signed years ago was a forgery. Gideon had made a massive show of locking it away in the family estate's vault, claiming it required maximum security. If she secured that physical document, she would possess ironclad proof of his bigamy. She needed to retrieve it tonight.

Audrey had no intention of riding with Gideon. She flagged down a cab the moment she left the corporate tower and arrived at the estate two hours early.

She expected a quiet dinner with his parents. Instead, she walked into a chaotic, packed house. Gideon's parents had just returned from an overseas vacation, and multiple extended branches of the Sterling tree filled the vast living room.

Miriam Sterling spotted her from the velvet sofa. She peered over her silk-clad shoulder.

"Audrey. Gideon did not come with you?"

"He will be along shortly," Audrey answered evenly.

Miriam gave a sharp click of her tongue. Disdain dripped from her glossy lips.

"On an important occasion like this, letting someone from outside the family arrive solo. I do not know what has gotten into him."

Audrey felt a familiar irritation prick at her temples. She and Gideon shared a childhood engagement, cemented when her mother was still alive. But after her mother's passing, the Langdon family's influence plummeted while the Sterling empire expanded. Miriam had spent years pushing to sever the tied arrangement. Only Arthur Sterling, the principled family patriarch, refused to validate Miriam's social-climbing tactics. Because Gideon fought tooth and nail for the union, Miriam eventually surrendered, but she never forgave Audrey for holding onto the Sterling name. She never missed an opening to ice Audrey out.

Miriam opened her mouth to deliver another barb.

A breathless butler dashed through the grand archway.

"He is here."

Miriam dropped her feud with Audrey. She shot off the sofa. The surrounding uncles, aunts, and cousins mirrored her urgency, a massive wave of expensive fabrics and panicked chatter washing toward the front doors to welcome the arrival.

Audrey watched the stampede with shock. The Sterling family sat at the pinnacle of Atherton's moneyed elite. It took an act of god to make them scramble like nervous subordinates.

She drifted to the edge of the grand entryway and looked out across the manicured courtyard.

A sleek black Maybach rolled to a smooth stop on the circular driveway. A uniformed estate guard sprinted forward and yanked the rear door open, bowing at the waist.

A towering figure stepped onto the cobblestone.

The man wore a pristine black suit customized to fit a broad set of shoulders. His chiseled features were severe and unforgiving in the dusk light. His eyes, dark as a moonless midnight, radiated a fierce intensity. Every movement he made projected a terrifying, natural authority. It physically hurt to hold his stare for more than a passing second.

The sea of Sterling relatives swarmed the vehicle. They threw a cacophony of greetings and praise at him.

The man remained unfazed. His stunning face held the impassive chill of carved ice. He offered zero emotion to the fawning crowd. Then, as if sensing an anomaly in his environment, he lifted his chin and shifted his gaze past the wall of relatives. He looked straight toward the fringes of the porch.

His lethal dark eyes locked onto Audrey.

Her heart slammed into her ribs. A jolt of pure, unexpected nervous anticipation spiked through her blood.

It was Declan Sterling. Gideon's older brother had returned to the country.

Declan shared the Sterling bloodline, but he held zero sentimental ties to the people currently suffocating him on the driveway. He relocated overseas at a young age and spent the last decade building a separate, monstrous empire abroad. Gideon's father, Richard, was a financial lightweight who threw money into bottomless pits. Grandfather Arthur possessed the strategic intellect, but old age was stripping away his grip on the board. The true, unchecked power of the Sterling dynasty rested solely in Declan's hands.

Audrey let a slow breath escape her lungs. The scale of the reception clicked into place. The packed living room, the nervous energy, the panicked rush to the door.

They had all turned out for Declan.
