“H-how?” I stammered, looking around. I hadn’t even noticed his presence or heard his footsteps. Or maybe I had just been too preoccupied with my own thoughts to notice.

Before he could answer, we heard distant footsteps drawing nearer. Without hesitation, he grabbed my wrist and pulled me into the closest room, which turned out to be the janitor’s closet.
