The Golden Goose

The suffocating air of the intensive care ward finally gave way to the crisp, coffee-scented chill of the bright hospital café. Seeking a brief respite from the heavy medical atmosphere upstairs, Elara walked straight to the counter. The intense mental focus and extreme physical exertion of executing the precise acupuncture procedure had hit her all at once. She stood there, unapologetically watching the barista pour six aggressive shots of heavy syrup into her large iced coffee.

Taking her cup, she walked over to a small table near the center of the room. She sat down and took a long, deep drink. The sugar hit her system immediately. The crushing exhaustion began to melt away, leaving behind a relaxed weariness that made her look oddly magnetic. She set the plastic cup down on the table. The crushed ice clinked crisply against the sides of the thin plastic.

Her sharp eyes drifted past the empty tables to the large glass window. A stern, dignified older gentleman sat nearby with a pair of twins. The little girl looked pale and listless, slumped against her chair in a way that spoke of long-term illness. The boy beside her fidgeted constantly, his face flushed with restless energy. Throwing a quiet glance their way, Elara watched the boy’s legs closely for a silent moment. She filed the clinical observation away in her mind and casually looked back down at her iced drink.

Her quiet moment shattered aggressively. The café door chimed with a sharp ring.

Linda swept into the room. The sharp, rapid click of her designer heels against the polished tile announced her direct, unhesitating path toward Elara's table. Julian was trapped upstairs in his wheelchair. Emboldened entirely by his physical absence, Linda shed any polite pretense. Her disdain for the young woman was naked and vile.

She stopped right in front of Elara, towering over the small table.

"You have some nerve for a girl your age. Tell me, how much do you want? Name your price to leave us alone." Linda spoke casually, immediately reaching into her expensive bag. She pulled out a thin cigarette and readied it between her fingers, treating Elara precisely as if she were swatting away a pesky, insignificant pest.

Elara did not flinch. She maintained her cool, unruffled demeanor, leaning back in her chair to put distance between them.

"What are you even talking about, old witch?" Elara aimed the blunt question upward, her voice perfectly dismissive.

Linda's face flushed deep red with immediate anger at the blatant disrespect. She leaned heavily over the table, her upper lip curling into a malicious sneer.

"Do not think Julian can actually protect you. His legs are completely ruined. Ever since he was crippled, plenty of people have been waiting for him to finally die. He is stuck with a kid who cannot even speak. He is an incredibly fragile, unreliable protector." Linda let out a faint sound of disgust, though her sweeping gaze betrayed a sharp envy of Elara's flawless, youthful face.

Unbeknownst to the squabbling women, Marcus stood quietly in the deep, shadowed corner of the café. He held his phone raised at chest level, perfectly angled to capture the audio and video. He was live-streaming the entire confrontation directly to his boss.

Miles away, or perhaps just floors above in the dimly lit hospital hallway near the VIP ward, Julian stared down at the digital screen in his palm. A cold, quiet, and absolutely lethal rage began to visibly thicken the air around his wheelchair. The sheer murderous intent rolling off his broad shoulders was suffocating.

Toby swallowed nervously. His legs felt unsteady beneath him. He took a slow, calculated step back toward the wall, praying desperately that Elara would not choose the wrong words and seal her own fate.

Back in the bright café, the tense standoff at the table dragged on.

Elara tapped her long nails against her plastic cup, unimpressed by the threat.

"Would you say that to his face?" she asked calmly.

Linda smiled coldly. "It would be a terrible shame for a face as pretty as yours to be ruined by a madman like him. You really do not know?" Linda dropped her voice, leaning in further, treating Elara like a naive, easily manipulated girl eager for gossip. "Julian has always been drawn to bloodshed. After a specific incident in his past, he lost what little sanity he had left. Do you honestly think you are safe with someone that dangerous?"

Elara kept her expression perfectly blank, though the words sparked a quiet curiosity. She wondered what gruesome incident the old witch could possibly be referring to.

Believing she firmly held the upper hand in the negotiation, Linda laid out her ultimate bribe.

"Give me inside information on him, and I will pay you 300 thousand dollars. Assist me whenever I ask for a favor, and I will arrange for you to study abroad, far away from all this Blackwood drama." Linda brought the unlit cigarette to her lips. "What do you think?"

Marcus watched with cool interest from his hidden corner. He waited silently to see which way the young woman would lean when faced with real money.

Elara feigned innocent, wide-eyed surprise. She gently turned her plastic iced coffee cup on the smooth table surface, her gaze going briefly distant.

"Is 300 thousand genuinely considered a lot of money?" Elara asked softly.

Linda smiled to herself. This was proving far easier than she previously thought. To her, 300 thousand was just the pathetic price of a few salon visits, a cheap bribe to plant a spy.

"Of course it is," Linda answered smoothly.

Elara tilted her head to the side. She locked her captivating, dark eyes onto the older woman, leaning in with a soft, deceptive smile.

"But old witch, do you have any idea how much Mr. Blackwood currently pays me?"

Linda leaned in even closer to hear the exact financial figure. Her greedy eagerness made her ignore the repeated, deliberate insult.

Without a single shred of hesitation, Elara abruptly upended her large cup. She dumped the freezing iced coffee squarely over Linda's perfectly styled hair. The heavy sugar syrup and crushed ice cascaded down the woman's face and ruined her expensive clothes. The sharp, bitter-sweet scent of coffee instantly flooded the air, dripping onto the floor.

Linda shrieked in absolute fury. A soaked, humiliated mess, she clawed at her sticky face and physically lunged across the small table.

Elara reacted with lightning speed. She shifted her weight back and swiftly kicked Linda squarely in the stomach.

The heavy impact sent the older woman gasping violently for air. Linda collapsed to the hard tile floor, clutching her abdomen and writhing in physical pain.

Marcus's hand holding the phone trembled in his corner. He winced inwardly, knowing exactly how much force was behind that precise strike.

Elara stood over the gasping woman. Her innocent expression vanished without a trace, replaced by a cold, absolute command. She hated indoor cigarette smoke, but she outright refused to let anyone disrespect the man who represented her ticket to future financial security.

"Even if he is a madman, it is absolutely not your place to say so." She clicked her tongue in pure disgust. "As long as I am around, no one is allowed to touch him. He is my..."

The live video feed abruptly cut out.

In the dark hospital hallway, the dangerous, murderous tension that had been clinging to Julian vanished entirely. He sat perfectly still in his heavy wheelchair, staring blankly at the silent black screen in his hand.

Toby finally let out a slow, trembling breath. He cringed inwardly at what he assumed was a bold, deeply possessive, and wildly inappropriate romantic declaration from the young doctor toward his terrifying boss.

However, back in the brightly lit café, the reality stood entirely different.

Marcus had dropped his phone in sheer shock. It clattered loudly against the tile floor. As the screen went dark, he distinctly heard Elara finish her dramatic sentence.

"...golden goose."

Marcus stared down at the dark screen of his dropped device. He felt deeply conflicted over whether he should ever tell Julian the highly unromantic, purely financial truth of her bold statement.

"You will pay for this humiliation!" Linda shrieked from the floor, struggling to pull herself up through the heavy syrup and blinding pain.

Elara met the woman's rage with a chillingly cold smile. She raised a single middle finger, openly mocking her.

"He will pay for the mess."

Elara pointed directly at Marcus in the corner, proving she had been fully aware of his secret presence and the live stream the entire time. Showing no further interest in the writhing woman, she turned on her heel and headed for the glass door.

Just before stepping out into the lobby, Elara seemed to remember something important. She paused in her tracks. Slowly, she turned her attention back toward the dignified old man sitting with the twins.
