The Price of Indifference
Dominic snatched the crumpled paper from the cold marble windowsill, his sharp gaze scanning the harsh printed lines. It was the divorce agreement. It was the exact same legal document he had shoved in her face in the presence of Helena, intending to use it as a weapon to punish her. His own arrogant signature sat at the bottom of the page in bold, black ink.
Right next to his name, Valerie’s delicate handwriting sat finalized on the dotted line.
A wave of hot, blinding fury spiked through his chest. He crushed the paper in his fist, his breath hissing through his teeth. She had actually signed it. The reality of the ink on the page defied everything he knew about her. Ever since their early college days, Valerie had chased him without a single ounce of hesitation or shame. She had weathered his vicious indifference, his endless verbal cruelty, and the bitter, suffocating resentments of their accidental marriage. He remembered how she used to blush at a mere passing glance from him, how she would prepare endless gifts and wait for him in the freezing rain just to hand him a hot coffee.
He had always arrogantly assumed that this woman would wait in the shadows of his life forever. He expected her to tolerate his coldness, taking her desperate, unwavering devotion as an eternal given. He never expected that the woman who practically worshipped the ground he walked on would just vanish into thin air, leaving behind nothing but this crumpled piece of paper.
The fiery anger vanished, giving way to a sickening, hollow drop in his stomach. A sharp, suffocating panic pierced his chest, stealing the breath from his lungs. It felt as if a jagged blade had been driven straight into his heart, making his knees buckle for a fraction of a second.
He spun around and raced out of the dark house. He shoved the key into the ignition of his sports car and tore out of the driveway, breaking every speed limit in the dark city to reach the Vance villa. The engine roared as he gripped the steering wheel with white knuckles, his mind racing with terrifying possibilities.
He slammed on the brakes outside the grand estate. The massive wrought-iron gates were bound shut with a heavy rusted chain. The sprawling yard was a chaotic disaster. The front door hung broken off its hinges, the once-immaculate lawn was littered with shattered belongings, and every first-floor window was broken into jagged teeth of glass. The magnificent house was a dark, ransacked, hollow shell.
Standing amid the crunching glass and debris of her family home, the harrowing, bloody truth of the past three days hit him like a physical blow. Frantic calls to his elite connections confirmed the nightmare. Gideon Vance had taken a desperate, tragic plunge from the roof of a corporate building and lay broken in a hospital bed. Hired thugs had cornered Beatrice, resulting in a brutal, bloody beating that left her hospitalized on life support. The proud, unshakeable Vance Group had faced sudden collapse.
Mind-numbing terror for Valerie’s physical safety seized him. Dominic scoured the dark city like a madman. He utilized every connection he possessed, threatened every contact, and searched every hospital ward in Valdira. His frantic efforts yielded zero results. She was gone.
When a battered, exhausted Kendrick finally dragged himself back to Valdira to salvage the burning remnants of his family's legacy, Dominic intercepted him. He kicked open the door to Kendrick’s makeshift office, his chest heaving with exertion.
Kendrick looked up from the towering piles of bankruptcy files on his desk. His face was bruised, and his gaze was as icy and unyielding as a glacier.
Kendrick sneered, his voice dripping with venom as he leaned back in his creaking chair. "Congratulations, Mr. Kensington. You finally divorced my sister as you so desperately wished. How else could you have gotten another woman pregnant while married? You're such a phenomenal actor, looking so unhappy now that you got exactly what you wanted."
Dominic clenched his fists so tightly his knuckles turned stark white. He took a menacing step toward the wooden desk. "Tell me where she is. Let me see her. I wanna talk to her right now!"
Kendrick did not even blink at the threat. He flipped a page on his desk and kept his tone brutally flat, refusing to meet Dominic's eyes again. "My sister has nothing to say to you. Your business and your pathetic life have nothing to do with her anymore. You should have told her long ago if you cherished her."
Dominic lost his legendary composure. He lunged across the desk, scattering legal papers everywhere, and grabbed Kendrick’s shirt collar with both hands. His bloodshot eyes searched the other man's face with frantic desperation. "No! I want to see her! She loves me so much! She would never just divorce me!"
Kendrick remained rigid. He methodically and forcefully pried Dominic’s trembling fingers away from his collar one by one. His bruised expression dripped with devastating mockery as he shoved the billionaire back. "Save your breath. She explicitly asked me to convey a final message to you. The one thing she regretted most in her whole life was ever falling in love with you. If she could revive her life, she wished she had never even known you."
The venomous words struck Dominic like a physical blow, leaving him reeling backward. He stood paralyzed in the center of the cramped room. Given the horrific violence surrounding her family, a terrifying, invasive thought took root in his brain. Kendrick's words were so ambiguous and final. Was she dead? His immense pride mirrored Kendrick's stubbornness, keeping the real truth locked tightly away in the dark, but the wound in his chest never healed.
Yet, the devastating truth had finally surfaced under the glaring, brilliant auction lights.
At the glamorous charity event, Camilla stood frozen beside Dominic. For the past twenty minutes, she had wildly anticipated the moment Caleb would select her. She had envisioned the dazzling Pink Star necklace resting against her own skin, proving to the elite crowd that she was the most cherished woman in the room. She wanted to see Dominic mesmerized by her beauty.
Instead, Caleb walked right past her without sparing her a single glance. He offered the priceless jewel to Chloe, the renowned fashion design winner.
Camilla was dumbfounded. The celebrated, most sought-after designer Chloe was none other than Valerie. The very woman she hated most in the world had returned. Valerie was not a broken exile mourning a dead family. She stood on the stage bathed in light, radiating the aura of a triumphant queen.
Camilla gritted her teeth, her manicured fingernails biting into her palms. She instinctively glanced at the tall man beside her.
Dominic’s famously cold, impenetrable facade was cracking apart. A profound, terrifying hint of raw fury radiated from his tense frame. He stared up at the stage, his eyes fixed unblinking on the woman in the jade-white gown. Camilla caught the dangerous ticking of his jaw and the tight, white-knuckled grip he had on his champagne flute. The suppressed violence in his posture made the air around him thick and unbreathable.
Camilla swallowed hard, her heart pounding with a sudden, nervous dread. She could not help but wonder why Dominic was visibly shaking with anger when he saw Valerie. A sickening thought clawed at the back of her mind, whispering that his rage wasn't born of hatred, but of something far more dangerous.
