Feverish Intimacy
The word hung in the air like a physical blow.
Donovan stood over her, his tall frame blocking the light from the small window and casting a long shadow across her trembling form. He looked down at her with cold, detached scrutiny, his lips pressed into a thin, merciless line. Genevieve felt a sharp sting in her chest. Her fever-addled brain scrambled for a defense, her pride refusing to let him see how deeply his words cut.
She looked up at him, her vision slightly blurred by the heat radiating from her skin. "Of course, I can't match Melody's thoughtfulness for others."
The words slipped past her lips before she could stop them. The moment they left her mouth, a wave of regret washed over her. It sounded defensive, petty, and too transparent. She had practically laid her insecurity bare before him.
Donovan froze. For a fraction of a second, his stoic expression cracked, replaced by genuine surprise. He had not expected her to bite back, let alone mention Melody in such a sharp tone. But the surprise vanished as quickly as it had appeared, replaced by something far more dangerous.
He stepped forward, instantly invading her personal space. The scent of his expensive cologne, mixed with the clean scent of rain and tobacco, enveloped her. Before she could recoil, his large hand shot out. His thick fingers gripped her chin, forcing her face upward. His touch was firm, leaving her with no choice but to meet his gaze. His dark eyes narrowed, turning as sharp and predatory as a hawk's. They seemed to drill straight into her soul, stripping away her defenses.
"Are you jealous of her?"
His voice dropped an octave, sending a tremor of panic through her. Genevieve’s heart hammered against her ribs. Flustered and trapped, she tried to push him away. She raised her hands and heaved her weight against his solid chest, desperate to put some distance between them. But her fever had drained her of every ounce of strength. Her hands shook against the hard muscle of his chest, her touch feeling more like a feeble caress than a rejection. Her knees buckled under the slight exertion. Losing her balance, she fell backward, landing heavily on the soft examination couch.
Donovan stood over her, his towering figure silhouetted against the bright fluorescent lights. He did not look angry. Instead, a slow, mocking amusement curled the corners of his lips. Her lack of physical strength seemed to embolden him, giving him a quiet dominance that made her skin prickle with heat.
"You can't even stand," he noted, his voice smooth.
Genevieve pulled her hand back, her voice weak as she tried to pull herself up. "Leave me alone."
The leather of the couch felt cool against her back, but her core was still burning. Donovan ignored her protests. He turned on his heel and walked over to the small sink in the corner of the room. He fetched a small plastic basin, turning the tap until the water ran freezing cold. He soaked a clean white towel in the icy water, wringing it out with his large, capable hands until it was damp.
When he walked back to the couch, Genevieve watched him with wide, defensive eyes. She tried to scramble backward, her heels digging into the examination couch, but there was nowhere to go.
"Don't touch me," she said, her voice rising in a frantic attempt to reassert her boundaries. She thrashed her arms weakly, trying to swat his hands away.
Donovan did not answer. He leaned over her, his heavy chest pressing close, and firmly pressed the cold, damp towel against her forehead.
The shocking, cool dampness against her flushed, burning skin was like a wave of relief. Genevieve gasped, her body reacting to the sudden drop in temperature. The instinct to fight dissolved in an instant. The physical comfort was far too overwhelming to resist, spreading a soothing chill across her chest and temples. Her arms fell limp at her sides, and her head sank back into the pillow as she surrendered to his touch, letting him guide her back onto the cushion.
Donovan watched her reaction, his dark eyes gleaming with a strange, possessive intensity. He wiped the dripping sweat from her forehead, his fingers gentle despite his imposing size. He moved the towel down her temple, wiping her burning cheeks and the line of her jaw.
"Genevieve, you're really something," he said softly, his voice low and intimate.
Her eyelids fluttered open, her gaze meeting his deep, dark eyes. "What?"
He let out a low snort, his thumb tracing the side of her face. "What are you pretending to be stupid for? This is my first time doing this for others."
Before she could process his words, his large hand moved down. Without a second of hesitation, his fingers gripped the top of her shirt and pulled her collar open, exposing the pale, smooth skin of her upper chest and collarbones. Genevieve’s expression shifted instantly into panic. The sudden vulnerability made her heart leap into her throat. She grabbed his large wrist, her fingers locking around his skin with all the strength she could muster.
"Stop! I can do it myself," she insisted loudly, her face burning with profound embarrassment.
Donovan frowned deeply, his handsome features clouding over with visible displeasure at her resistance. He did not pull his hand back. Instead, his large hand remained still, hovering intimately just millimeters over her exposed chest, the cool towel brushing against the warm curve of her skin.
The air between them grew thick, charged with an unspoken tension that made it hard to breathe. He stared down at her, his eyes dark with a stubborn refusal to back down.
Suddenly, a shockingly loud crash outside the door shattered the heavily charged atmosphere. The sound of metal clattering against the linoleum floor echoed through the hallway. Donovan’s hand froze. He slowly pulled his hand back, his expression returning to its usual cold, unreadable mask. Genevieve let out a breath she hadn't realized she was holding, her hand dropping back to the couch.
Outside the door, Melody was frantically gathering several dropped medical items from the hallway floor. She picked up a metal tray, a box of gauze, and some small bottles, her movements hurried and clumsy.
A moment later, she stepped inside the room. Her face was pale, but she wore a stiff, overly gentle smile as if she hadn't just witnessed the intimate scene through the open crack.
Melody stepped forward, bypassing him and walking straight to the side of the couch. She stretched out her hand, her eyes locked on the damp towel in his grasp. "Let me take over, Don. I can take care of Genevieve from here."
Donovan looked down at Genevieve, who lay still on the couch, her chest rising and falling with shallow breaths. Without uttering a single word, he handed the damp towel over to Melody. He gave a curt nod. "I'll be outside."
He turned and walked toward the door, his long strides carrying him out of the room. The heavy tension that had filled the space seemed to follow him out, leaving the air cold and empty.
The heavy wooden door shut with a soft click, leaving the two women alone in the quiet examination room. Melody stood by the side of the couch, holding the damp towel. Her gentle smile remained pasted on her face, but her eyes were cold as she looked down at Genevieve.
"Let me help you cool down, Genevieve," Melody said, her voice dripping with artificial sweetness.
Genevieve felt a wave of suffocating awkwardness wash over her. "Thank you, but I think I can manage. Maybe we should call a nurse instead."
"Don't be silly," Melody replied, her tone leaving no room for argument. "A nurse won't be as careful as I am. Besides, we are practically family. There's no need to be shy around me."
Without waiting for Genevieve's approval, Melody leaned over and began to unbutton the top of Genevieve's clothes. Her movements were clinical and efficient, yet there was an underlying roughness to her touch that betrayed her polite facade. The cool metal of Melody's ring brushed against Genevieve’s collarbone, sending a jolt of discomfort through her.
Genevieve tightly closed her eyes. She did not want to look at Melody, nor did she want to endure the uncomfortable proximity. The humiliation of being exposed and helpless before her husband's childhood love was almost worse than the fever itself.
Because her eyes were shut, Genevieve did not see the transition that came over Melody's face.
The moment Genevieve's eyes closed, Melody’s sweet, angelic expression contorted into something profoundly ugly and resentful. Her gaze swept over Genevieve’s body. Under the unbuttoned clothes, Genevieve’s naturally blessed, curvy figure was revealed. Her skin, flushed pink from the fever, was soft and flawless, her curves soft and alluring. Even in her weakened, sweaty state, there was an undeniable, raw beauty to her that made Melody’s chest tighten with a sharp, toxic pang of deep unease.
Melody bit her inner cheek so hard she tasted copper. Looking at the curves of Genevieve's body, a terrifying thought took root in her mind. Just how physically intimate had Genevieve and Donovan's marital relationship genuinely become while she was away abroad? Had Donovan touched this body? Had he looked at her the way he had just moments ago, with that raw, possessive hunger? The jealousy clawed at Melody's throat, hot and venomous. She squeezed the damp towel in her hand, the cold water dripping onto the floor.
Unable to hold back her venom any longer, Melody leaned down close to Genevieve's ear, speaking in a low, toxic voice. "Thank you for everything you've done for me these years."
Genevieve opened her weary eyes, her mind foggy from the heat. She looked up, her expression filled with deep confusion. "Thank me? For what?"
Melody smiled softly, but her eyes remained cold and dead. Melody said, her voice smooth and deliberate. "For keeping Donovan company, of course. Although your marriage to him was just an arrangement to help you out, it actually worked out perfectly for us. Having a married status kept all those cheap, annoying suitors away from him for the past two years while I was abroad. It saved me a lot of trouble. So, really, thank you. You were a very convenient shield."
The malicious implication was crystal clear. Melody was telling her, in no uncertain terms, that she was nothing more than a disposable placeholder. She was a temporary tool used to keep Donovan’s bed warm and his social status protected until the real wife returned. Melody was warning her to keep her expectations in the dirt, where they belonged.
Genevieve’s heart sank, but she did not let her face betray her pain. She easily read between the malicious lines. The humiliation burned hotter than her fever, but she refused to give Melody the satisfaction of seeing her cry. She pressed her pale, dry lips together, her throat feeling like sandpaper.
"Could I have some water, please?" Genevieve asked, her voice raspy.
Melody’s smile widened slightly, triumphant. "Of course."
She turned to the small table, poured a glass of cool water from the pitcher, and handed it to Genevieve. Genevieve took the glass with trembling hands, raising it to her lips and drinking it down. The cool liquid soothed her dry throat, giving her the strength she needed to speak.
She handed the empty glass back to Melody, looking directly up into her beautiful, hostile eyes. The physical weakness was still there, but Genevieve's gaze was steady and clear. She decided to address the unspoken, suffocating tension head-on.
"Actually, you don't have to worry about Donovan and me. He will always keep your position as his wife because you saved his life. No one can replace that. You also did me a favor, and I won't forget it."
