Deceptive Melody
The second Maeve’s hands pressed down, the lazy indifference surrounding her vanished. Her left hand struck a deep, resonant chord, anchoring a rapid rhythm. A split second later, her right hand swept across the upper register. She picked out the exact notes Elise had just flaunted, but with a complex, masterful harmony that transposed the melody up two octaves. The execution was flawless. It carried a rich, haunting depth that made Elise’s previous performance sound like a rigid, soulless metronome exercise.
The brilliant melody poured through the spacious living room, demanding attention.
Elise shot up from her seat. Her face twisted into a mask of pure shock and mounting rage.
"You can actually play the piano?" Elise shrieked, her voice cracking over the delicate music.
She stared at the country bumpkin in horror. The piece Maeve was effortlessly weaving was a complex variation Elise had never even attempted. Elise considered herself at the pinnacle of amateur piano society. There were only two explanations for this display. Either this feral stray was a trained prodigy who far surpassed her own skill level, or it was a bizarre, impossible fluke.
As the blood drained from Elise's face, a sharp realization hit Maeve.
She was a mercenary operating deep undercover. Her sole purpose in returning to the Vance residence was to utilize the family name as a shield to assassinate Kael Thorne. Drawing massive attention to herself as a hidden genius would ruin her camouflage and jeopardize the mission.
Maeve let out a soft breath and smiled. She closed her eyes. Her fingers, seconds ago moving with lethal precision, stiffened into rigid claws.
She slammed her palms down hard. A horrible, discordant crash echoed off the high ceilings. She began pounding the keys with zero rhythm, dragging her nails across the ivory like a toddler throwing a blind tantrum. The beautiful sonata instantly devolved into a chaotic, ear-piercing mess.
Elise blinked. The tight panic left her chest in a giant whoosh of relief.
A smug, victorious grin spread across Elise's face. The initial notes had just been a blind stroke of luck. The bumpkin had merely memorized the hand placement and panicked immediately after, resulting in this garbage.
Elise stepped forward and clapped her hands in an exaggerated, mocking rhythm. "Wow. I did not expect the little noise you just made up to sound so interesting at first. You really are full of surprises, Maeve. You have such raw talent."
The biting sarcasm flew right over the heads of the surrounding maids. They exchanged knowing smirks. Arthur sighed and shook his head in pity. Lydia's face darkened into a stormy scowl. To them, the chaotic banging proved that the feral girl had no idea how to handle a luxury instrument.
Lydia stepped forward, her expensive heels clicking sharply against the marble floor.
"Stop this racket at once. What kind of talent is this supposed to be? Creating all this nonsense is truly embarrassing for our family." Lydia glared at Maeve with sheer disgust. "Go to your room! Now!"
"Mom, you are misunderstanding." Elise stepped between them, playing the role of the benevolent, caring sister. "Maeve is just trying to show off her music-composing gift. That is a kind of talent too."
Elise paused, tapping her chin as if a brilliant idea had just struck her.
"By the way, Maeve, Dad arranged for you to go to Crownpoint University with me. Since you are so eager to learn, I will ask Ms. Helena Rostova to take you on as her student."
Helena Rostova was Altria's reigning piano master. She boasted ten national championships and was revered as the absolute soul of Altria’s classical music scene. More importantly, Helena was notorious for her vicious temper and zero tolerance for amateurs. Elise knew for a fact that if Helena heard Maeve's chaotic banging, the master would publicly humiliate the country girl and blacklist her from ever touching a piano in the city.
Elise wanted to ensure Maeve understood the sheer weight of the offer.
"Ms. Rostova is a legend, Maeve. She participated in Zenith Sanctum's preliminary training five times. She nearly made it into their top tier." Elise smiled sweetly, her eyes gleaming with malice. "You should be on your knees thanking me for this connection."
Zenith Sanctum was the pinnacle of human achievement. It gathered the world’s most elite assassins, medical experts, hackers, racers, and financial titans. Brilliant talents spent their entire lives bleeding for a chance just to scrub the floors of Zenith Sanctum. For an ordinary person, a reject who survived the preliminary rounds was akin to a god.
Elise waited for the awe, the gratitude, or at least a stutter of disbelief.
Maeve stood up from the velvet bench. She brushed a piece of imaginary lint from her sleeve.
"No need. A teacher who failed to get into Zenith Sanctum lacks the qualifications to instruct me." Maeve kept her voice flat and careless.
The living room plunged into dead silence.
Lydia choked on a sharp gasp. The maids stared with wide, horrified eyes.
"What did you just say?" Elise sneered, the sweet facade cracking in an instant. "Are you delusional, Maeve? Or did you somehow bump into a big shot from Zenith Sanctum while feeding pigs in the mud?"
An aura of suffocating, icy arrogance rolled off Maeve. The lazy country girl vanished, replaced by a seasoned predator. She took a slow, measured step toward Elise.
Elise swallowed hard. Her instincts screamed at her to step back. The sheer aggression radiating from Maeve’s dark eyes was paralyzing. She could not fathom how a rural stray possessed such a terrifying presence.
"In truth, the old-timers at Zenith Sanctum are the ones who should consider themselves lucky to know me." Maeve spoke the words with casual, deadly certainty.
She broke eye contact and turned her head toward Arthur, the silent butler.
"Where is my room? Take me there."
Maeve did not wait for a response. She strode past her stunned mother and sister, heading straight for the grand staircase. As she reached the second-floor landing, the delayed eruption of rage echoed from below.
"How dare she be so conceited?" Lydia shrieked, her composure shattered. "How dare that feral brat say such things in my house?"
"Mom, do not be angry." Elise forced a soothing tone, though her hands were trembling. "Maeve is just ignorant. Once she starts at Crownpoint University and sees how the real world operates, she will learn her place. She will understand what Zenith Sanctum truly is."

Arthur led Maeve to the far end of the east wing on the second floor. He opened the door to a cramped, narrow space. It was a glorified storage closet, marginally larger than the dusty attic. It lacked the plush carpets, sprawling windows, and ornate chandeliers found in the rest of the mansion. Elise’s adjacent study was easily three times its size.
Maeve stepped inside and dropped her small duffel bag on the thin mattress.
She did not care about the dismal living conditions. The Vance family meant nothing to her. They were merely stepping stones, a convenient biological tie that granted her legal entry into Altria without triggering border alarms. Once Kael Thorne was dead, she would vanish back into the shadows and leave this pathetic family behind forever.
Maeve walked over to the single small window and yanked the heavy curtains shut, plunging the room into darkness. She pulled a sleek, reinforced laptop from her bag and flipped it open. Her slender fingers flew across the keyboard, bypassing three layers of military-grade encryption in seconds.
The screen flickered, projecting a secure video feed.
A massive, bearded face filled the frame, practically pressing his nose against the lens.
"Boss! How is it going? Having fun playing house with your long-lost family?" Ironclad boomed.
Ironclad was a hulking giant standing six-foot-five. He was a force of nature on the battlefield and one of Maeve's most trusted lieutenants, known for tearing through enemy barricades with his bare hands.
A hand entered the frame and shoved the giant's face out of view.
"Move aside, you overgrown ape," Talon muttered.
Talon stepped into the center of the screen. He adjusted his gold-rimmed glasses and smoothed the lapels of his tailored suit, projecting the image of a refined gentleman.
"Boss, I secured the intelligence you requested." Talon tapped a file on a tablet just out of frame. "Kael Thorne has returned to the country. He is currently stationed in Valerius, acting as a temporary military instructor at Crownpoint University. Given the heavy security around him, a direct assault is ill-advised. I suggest posing as a student. It is the most viable path to get within striking distance."
Maeve leaned back against the cheap headboard. Her eyes gleamed in the glow of the screen.
Under the codename Nightshade, Maeve had clashed with Kael Thorne across ten separate warzones. Their mercenary groups had decimated each other’s ranks, yet the two leaders had never met face-to-face. He was the ghost she had been hunting for years. Infiltrating his class as a naïve university student was a brilliantly twisted strategy. It aligned perfectly with Elise's mocking offer to enroll her at Crownpoint.
"Understood. I will handle the enrollment," Maeve stated, a cold determination settling in her chest.
She scanned the background of the video feed. A plume of black smoke was drifting past a shattered window in their headquarters.
"Where is Siren?" Maeve asked, narrowing her eyes at the destruction.
Talon let out a long, exhausted sigh and rubbed his temples.
"Ever since the board heard you went off the grid, those old fossils at Zenith Sanctum have been driving us insane. They literally blew our front gates off the hinges with a prototype kinetic bomb this morning, demanding to see you. Siren is en route to break a few of their legs and reset the perimeter."
Talon leaned closer to the camera, his refined composure cracking.
"Please, Boss. Assassinate Thorne and come home quickly. If you stay away much longer, we will not be able to hold the fort against these Zenith lunatics."
Maeve smirked. "Hold the line. I will end this soon." She severed the connection, plunging the tiny room back into silence.

Miles away, on the outskirts of Valerius, a top-secret military training facility baked under the midday sun.
Heavy boots slammed against the reinforced concrete courtyard. Squads of seasoned, combat-hardened warriors marched through the gates, their gruff shouts cutting through the stifling heat. They had just returned from a brutal live-fire exercise, their uniforms caked in dust and gunpowder.
Standing at the front of the steel observation deck was a man who commanded the space simply by existing in it.
Kael Thorne was six-foot-three of coiled muscle and lethal grace. He possessed sharp, aristocratic features, a high nose bridge, and thin lips set in a permanent, severe line. The scorching sun beat down on him, causing beads of sweat to glisten on his bronze skin and slide down the exposed collar of his tactical shirt. His dark eyes tracked his returning men with cold, calculating precision.
Bootsteps echoed on the metal stairs behind him.
Gael Mercer, his second-in-command, approached and snapped a crisp salute. Gael held out a red-sealed dossier.
"Sir. Intelligence just confirmed it. Nightshade took the open contract." Gael kept his voice low, glancing around the deck.
Kael did not move. He kept his gaze fixed on the courtyard below.
"She tracked you all the way to Altria," Gael continued, a hint of unease bleeding into his tone. "The woman is fixated on you. For her to cross international borders and chase you here alone, she is either insanely bold or just plain insane."
Kael raised a single, calloused hand.
Gael snapped his mouth shut instantly.
Kael turned slowly. He took the dossier from his lieutenant’s hands and flipped it open. His dark eyes scanned the brief, heavily redacted lines confirming the movement of the world’s most dangerous assassin.
The severe line of Kael's mouth shifted.
A slow, dangerous smile spread across his handsome face. It was the look of an apex predator who had just spotted movement in the brush.
"Nightshade." Kael murmured the name, letting the syllables roll off his tongue. He snapped the dossier shut. "This is going to be incredibly entertaining. You tracked me into my own territory."
He tossed the folder back to Gael and looked out over the sun-drenched base, his eyes burning with anticipation.
"And once you step into my domain, you are my prey."
