The Ex-Sister-in-Law's Provocation
Stella slowly raised her eyes from the glossy pages of her auction brochure. The source of the grating, hostile voice was exactly who she expected. Clara Vance strutted confidently into the grand venue, practically dripping in ostentatious diamond jewels. Right beside her, her ex-mother-in-law, Sylvia Vance, glided forward, maintaining her signature icy and dignified facade. The mother-daughter duo cut a striking, arrogant image against the lush backdrop of the high-class auction hall.
Spotting Stella sitting entirely alone in the premium VIP section, Clara immediately zeroed in on her like a predator. The younger woman clearly still burned with the desire to violently settle the score from their humiliating previous encounter at the designer boutique. Her eyes flashed with undisguised malice as she approached.
Sylvia paused her graceful stride. Her sharp gaze swept over the seating arrangement, quickly assessing the situation. She reached out and gave Clara’s arm a brief, approving pat before turning away from the impending confrontation.
"The auction has not started yet. I am going to step away to browse the adjacent art exhibition for a little while." Sylvia announced softly, her tone perfectly measured to ensure her pristine socialite image remained untarnished. By excusing herself, she deliberately left her vicious daughter free to execute her malicious intentions with perfect plausible deniability.
Stella watched the older woman slip seamlessly away into the mingling crowd. It was the exact same cowardly, manipulative tactic Sylvia had employed for years whenever conflict erupted at the Vance Residence. Stella remained completely indifferent as Clara closed the remaining distance between them. An evil, twisted smile stretched across Clara’s heavily made-up face.
Clara rudely snatched the glossy auction list right out of Stella’s hands and threw it aggressively to the carpeted ground.
"What a shameless, gold-digging slut! Do you honestly think you have the qualifications to sit here among us? F*ck off immediately! This is my designated seat!" Clara spat, her voice echoing shrilly in the quiet VIP section.
Stella did not even flinch. She leaned back against the plush upholstery of her chair, meeting Clara’s furious glare with absolute, chilling nonchalance.
"What if I don't want to?" Stella replied softly.
Assuming Stella had desperately sneaked into the venue disguised as a cleaner or a low-level staff member, Clara maliciously pointed a manicured finger toward a lonely seat in the back, shadowed corner of the hall. It belonged to Trent, a notorious sixty-eight-year-old lecher who had recently been diagnosed with AIDS.
"If you sit over there, I'm absolutely sure he'll notice your cheap tricks and take care of you. Perhaps he'll even take you in as his seventh, diseased lover!" Clara cackled loudly, her laughter sharp and grating against the elegant atmosphere.
Unfazed by the vile threat, Stella slowly and gracefully stood up, smoothing her dress.
"You mean… that seat over there? Why don't you sit there yourself?" she suggested smoothly.
Furious that her demands were being so casually ignored by someone she deemed beneath her, Clara lost her temper. She raised her hand high, aiming to strike a stinging slap directly across Stella's face.
Stella effortlessly reached out. Her fingers clamped around Clara's wrist mid-air, halting the vicious strike with an iron grip.
"Miss Vance, I highly suggest you look up. There are high-definition surveillance cameras everywhere. I'm sure it would be incredibly embarrassing for you if you get caught on camera assaulting someone like a street thug." Stella warned, her voice dropping to a dangerous, steady murmur.
Forced to abruptly protect her pristine, carefully crafted socialite image, Clara froze. She looked up at the black glass domes mounted on the high ceilings, realizing her every move was being recorded. Reluctantly, she withdrew her trembling hand from Stella’s tight grasp.
"Just you wait! I am going to have you dragged out of here in pieces!" Clara spat a vicious, breathless threat before storming off to find security, her face flushed with dark rage.
Stella calmly sat back down, entirely unbothered by the dramatic exit. The peace lasted only a few short minutes. Clara soon returned, marching triumphantly alongside a nervous, sweating man in a sharp suit. It was Felix, Nolan's manager.
"Mr. Boyd, look at this! This woman sneaked in here without an invitation and is illegally occupying the premium seat strictly reserved for Nolan's official girlfriend. She is trespassing!" Clara accused loudly and aggressively, pointing a sharp finger right at Stella's face.
Felix wiped a heavy bead of sweat from his forehead. He had no idea who Stella was, but the loud commotion was beginning to draw the attention of the elite guests entering the hall. He approached Stella cautiously.
"Miss, may I please see your invitation? If you do not have one on your person, I must respectfully ask you to leave the premises." Felix asked politely, though his voice wavered with severe stress.
"I do not have one." Stella calmly and openly admitted.
Clara's face immediately flashed with smug, overwhelming delight. She crossed her arms over her chest, standing tall and ready to see her despised ex-sister-in-law dragged out by the heavy security guards.
"However, I'm Nolan's personal friend. He was the one who asked me to sit here and wait for him." Stella added smoothly, looking directly at the panicked manager.
Clara laughed sharply. The high, piercing sound of utter disbelief echoed across the rows of empty chairs.
"What a sick, pathetic joke! Nolan already has a girlfriend, and this seat is reserved specifically for her! Who do you think you are to make such an absurd claim? You are nothing but a desperate trespasser trying to save face!" Clara shouted. She was a loyal, obsessive fan of the skating champion. She knew all about the recent rumors of his new romance, but the idea that a global icon would ever associate with Stella was completely laughable to her.
Felix stood paralyzed in the aisle. The woman in front of him exuded a quiet, undeniable authority, but Clara's relentless shouting was creating a massive, unavoidable scene. Uncertain and terrified of making a career-ending mistake, Felix quickly pulled out his phone to call Nolan for backup.
As Felix paced nervously with the phone pressed to his ear, a curious, whispering crowd of elite guests began to gather around the commotion. Clara noticed the growing audience and intentionally raised her voice to a dramatic, ear-splitting shout.
"Where is the security? Step in right now and violently toss this trespassing rat out into the street! She is ruining the entire event!" Clara demanded aggressively, waving wildly toward a pair of burly security guards stationed near the heavy oak doors.
Before the broad-shouldered guards could take a single step forward, a cold, commanding voice sliced through the heavy tension in the room.
"Who are you? Who do you think you are to demand throwing my girlfriend out?"
The gathered crowd parted instantly. Nolan arrived, pushing his way through the whispering onlookers with heavy, determined steps. His usual gentle, ethereal demeanor was entirely replaced by an aloof, terrifying severity. His eyes locked onto Clara, his voice echoing like ice cracking across a frozen lake.
Clara’s face froze in sheer, unadulterated disbelief. The smug arrogance melted completely off her features, leaving her deathly pale and trembling. She stared at the world-renowned athlete, her mind violently struggling to process the devastating reality of his words. As one of Nolan's most obsessive, loyal fans, the devastating, world-shattering realization that her deeply despised ex-sister-in-law was actually his beloved girlfriend was a humiliating, physically crushing blow. Her knees went weak. She swayed unsteadily on her feet, the breath completely knocked out of her lungs as if she had been struck.
Nolan ignored Clara’s violently trembling form entirely. He walked straight past her, the severe scowl vanishing the second he looked down at Stella. He gently took Stella's hand, his touch warm and protective, and sat back down in his assigned chair right beside her.
The escalating standoff finally drew out the head event organizer. Mr. Dalton rushed over, his forehead gleaming with a heavy layer of nervous sweat. He had been explicitly warned by Nova Media's formidable executive, Harper, to ensure the VIP section ran flawlessly. Seeing the cluster of people and the obvious tension involving their star athlete, he began apologizing profusely, desperate to appease the massive commotion and save his own job.
Stella seamlessly turned the tables on her attacker. She did not raise her voice or throw a tantrum. Relying entirely on the silent authority Harper had previously established with the panicked organizer, she released Nolan's hand and pointed elegantly at Clara's designated plush chair.
"Please move this chair entirely over to Trent's side in the corner, since Harper will be sitting with us later and we need the space." Stella ordered smoothly.
Mr. Dalton did not dare to hesitate for a single second against Nova Media's wishes. He snapped his fingers frantically at the nearby event staff.
"You heard the lady! Lift that seat and relocate it to the back corner immediately!" Mr. Dalton barked.
The staff sprang into action. They quickly lifted Clara's plush seat from the front row and carried it all the way to the shadowed corner at the back of the hall, dropping it right next to the lecherous, staring old man. Trent licked his lips, his gaze already wandering over the newly placed chair with undisguised, predatory anticipation.
Clara stood rooted to the spot, trembling like a leaf in pure, unadulterated terror. The thought of sitting next to the diseased, handsy predator made her stomach churn violently. The trap she had so carefully laid for Stella had just snapped shut around her own ankle.
"Y-You! How dare you!" Clara stammered, her face as pale as a ghost. She pointed a shaking finger at Stella, her voice cracking under the crushing weight of her public humiliation.
Just then, the sharp click of luxury heels echoed against the marble floor. Hearing the loud commotion, Sylvia walked calmly back from the art exhibition. The older woman stepped through the lingering, whispering crowd, her sharp eyes quickly taking in her daughter's enraged, terrified expression and the shifting mass of elite guests.
Sylvia paused at the edge of the circle, her gaze darting from the empty space where Clara's chair used to be, to Stella sitting comfortably beside Nolan, and finally settling on her trembling daughter.
"What on earth is going on here?" Sylvia demanded.
