One Man Army
Tires shrieked in protest against the sun-baked asphalt as Kaelen slammed hard on the emergency brakes. A heavy, armored Ministry of Security vehicle screeched out of a narrow side street, fishtailing with harsh precision to a dead halt right across the empty lanes. The massive machine formed an impassable barricade of dark steel and blinding strobe lights, fully blocking his forward path on the secluded highway. The pungent scent of burnt rubber flooded the cabin.
At that exact moment, the phone resting in the center console buzzed to life. Kaelen tapped the screen to answer, keeping his eyes fixed on the blockade ahead.
"Boss, I just intercepted an urgent dispatch from the local grid. Zenith Police Bureau's Ministry of Security has zeroed in on your exact location. Do not engage them. We can have an extraction team there in under three minutes to handle the mess." Silas spoke in a rushed, tense tone over the secure line.
Kaelen shot a quick, calm glance into the rearview mirror. A second black and white police cruiser tore out of a blind alleyway behind him, its tires smoking as it slid into a parallel blocking position. They had sealed his retreat, trapping his blue car in a tight, reinforced box with no room to maneuver.
"They are already here. Stand down. I do not need backup for a minor inconvenience." Kaelen kept his voice cold and unbothered as he reached over and ended the call.
A heavily armed, burly officer vaulted out of the passenger side of the lead armored vehicle. He wore thick, blast-resistant tactical gear and gripped a customized assault rifle, his face twisted into a mask of unchecked authority. He marched toward Kaelen's blue car with heavy, thudding steps that echoed across the empty highway.
"Put your hands where I can see them right now! Step out of the vehicle and keep your head down!" The burly officer barked the loud, hostile orders, raising his weapon to point squarely at the center of Kaelen's windshield.
Kaelen remained perfectly still in the driver's seat, his hands resting lightly on the steering wheel. His sharp senses extended outward, instantly mapping the immediate surroundings with predatory precision. He could detect the faint, rhythmic breathing and the metallic click of at least three hidden snipers, their high-caliber firearms trained directly on his position from the roofs of the adjacent concrete structures. Ignoring the shouting officer, Kaelen pushed open the heavy car door and stepped out onto the asphalt, standing tall in the sunlight.
The burly man closed the distance in a flash, shoving the cold, uncompromising barrel of a secondary handgun directly against Kaelen's temple.
"Put your hands on your head and kneel on the ground! Do it now before I blow your brains out!" The officer shouted, pressing the metal harder against the skin, his finger twitching nervously on the trigger.
"Shut up." Kaelen muttered. His dark eyes flashed with a deadly, freezing light that promised instant retribution.
In a terrifying blur of motion that blatantly defied human physics, Kaelen moved. Before the officer's brain could even register the shift in reality, Kaelen snatched the heavy weapon straight from the man's tight grip. His strong fingers crushed the metal frame, dismantling the complex firearm with his bare hands in a single, fluid motion. Springs, jagged metal parts, and unfired brass bullets scattered onto the ground with a series of sharp, harmless clinks.
A suppressed sniper shot tore through the quiet air. The supersonic projectile grazed past Kaelen's ear, missing his skull by a mere fraction of an inch. It slammed into the asphalt exactly where he had been standing a millisecond prior, shattering the road and sending a dangerous shower of sharp debris flying into the air.
Panic twisted the burly officer's face into an ugly grimace. Realizing his primary weapon was gone and he was outmatched, he lunged forward with a serrated tactical dagger aimed directly at Kaelen's exposed throat.
Kaelen did not even blink. He caught the man's thick wrist mid-thrust, his grip clamping down like an unbreakable iron vise. With his free hand, Kaelen delivered a single, resounding slap straight to the officer's broad chest. The sheer kinetic force behind the strike sounded like a cannon blast echoing off the concrete walls. The impact hit hard enough to launch the massive man airborne, lifting his heavy boots clear off the pavement as he gasped for air.
A second volley of incoming sniper bullets whizzed down from the hidden vantage points on the rooftops. Kaelen pivoted on his heel, using the officer's flying, armored body as a human shield. The high-velocity rounds slammed into the thick tactical vest of the airborne man, knocking the breath from his lungs with sick, heavy thuds. Having absorbed the lethal gunfire, Kaelen tossed the massive officer eight meters away. The man crashed hard into the roadside dirt, rolling into a groaning, motionless heap in a thick cloud of dust.
Kaelen swayed to the side, dodging yet another high-caliber sniper round that sought to pierce his heart. The stray bullet punched a deep, jagged hole into the side of his blue car. Unfazed by the destruction, Kaelen shaped his right hand into a flat, rigid blade and swung it in a sweeping arc through the empty air.
The atmosphere tore apart with a deafening sonic boom. The sheer physical force of the swing manifested a massive, blinding white energy wave. It ripped across the highway, tearing up chunks of the pavement as it rushed toward the obstructing police car. The glowing wave struck the heavy vehicle with apocalyptic force, slicing the armored transport in half in a spectacular explosion of blinding sparks, shattered glass, and screeching, rending metal. The two severed halves of the barricade vehicle slid apart, revealing the terrified, pale faces of the remaining officers inside.
Standing tall amidst the chaotic panic and the raining debris, Kaelen brushed a stray speck of dust from his sleeve.
"Send someone who actually has decision-making power down here right now." Kaelen commanded, his voice projecting clearly over the ringing ears of the surviving men.
Armed Tactical Forces began to pour out from the shadows at both ends of the barricaded road, their combat boots pounding the pavement in unison. Dozens of elite soldiers raised their automatic weapons, drawing a tight bead on the lone man standing in the wreckage.
Kaelen narrowed his gaze. An intimidating, suffocating warlord aura flared to life around him, radiating a tangible pressure that made the air itself tremble and warp. Just as he prepared to step forward and decimate the front line, a sharp electronic order barked over the soldiers' secure radios.
"Hold your fire! Fall back!"
The terrified soldiers hesitated for only a second before lowering their weapons, forced into a resentful, slow retreat back toward their remaining transports, keeping their eyes locked on the monster before them.
A gray-haired, stern squadron leader stepped from the reinforced doors of a command armored car parked near the alleyway. Dante wore a heavy gray combat suit, his face lined with years of hard battle experience, yet his eyes betrayed a flicker of deep uncertainty as he surveyed the bisected vehicle and the cratered road.
Dante cleared his throat, attempting to assert his authority over the ruined scene. "We received credible intelligence that you pose a monumental threat to this city. Stand down and submit to questioning."
"I do not bother anyone if no one bothers me." Kaelen stated indifferently, folding his arms across his broad chest. "If you try to harm me, I will not hesitate to kill every last man standing on this road."
Dante stiffened, squaring his shoulders as he countered. "You need a harsh reality check. This is Aethelgard's capital, Zenith. This is a civilized city of strict laws and order, not the lawless, war-torn Four Outer Sectors where you run wild without consequence!"
"They are all exactly the same to me." Kaelen sneered, his voice dripping with thick condescension.
Dante's face flushed with hot anger. He took a bold step forward, pointing a gloved finger at Kaelen. "I have the supreme authority to arrest you on sweeping national security charges! You will rot in a black site for the rest of your life!"
Kaelen's eyes went dead. All trace of humanity vanished from his gaze, replaced by the cold, bottomless abyss of an apex predator.
"You can try." Kaelen dared him, his voice dropping to a dangerous, resonant baritone. "If you choose to oppose me, you must be ready to face total destruction. I do not mind subjecting the entirety of Zenith to my unbridled wrath."
The wind howled fiercely through the concrete canyon of the highway. The ambient temperature within a hundred-meter radius plummeted in an instant, the air freezing solid under Kaelen’s oppressive, god-like willpower. Frost crept up the sides of the remaining vehicles, snapping and cracking in the silence. The rapid breaths of the Tactical Forces turned into thick white plumes of vapor as a deadly chill sank into their bones.
Paralyzed by a deep-seated, biological dread, Dante felt his limbs lock firmly in place. His heart hammered a frantic, terrified rhythm against his ribs. In that bone-chilling moment, Dante realized their vaunted intelligence department had catastrophically underestimated the Crimson Dragons' true leader. This man could manipulate the physical world with his sheer intent. He was a walking calamity capable of erasing them all with a single thought.
Swallowing his immense pride and fighting the primal urge to flee, Dante raised his trembling hand and signaled his men to clear the flaming wreckage. The soldiers scrambled to drag the bisected car out of the way, desperate to escape the freezing aura before it stopped their hearts.
Dante forced his stiff muscles to relax, trying to regain his composure. He attempted a formal introduction to salvage whatever shred of dignity his elite unit had left. "Mr. Vance, let me introduce myself properly. I am Commander Dante of the—"
"I am not interested in who you are." Kaelen cut him off, turning his back on the squadron leader without a second glance.
Kaelen stepped back into his undamaged blue car, the engine purring to life with a turn of the key. He shifted into gear and sped away down the newly cleared highway, leaving the elite forces standing motionless in the dust and lingering frost.
"Commander! He is getting away! I request immediate permission to authorize specialized armor-piercing ammunition! I have a clean shot on his tires right now!" The lead sniper's angry, desperate pleas cracked loudly over Dante's earpiece.
"Negative. Cancel the operation. Everyone, stand down and secure the perimeter." Dante spoke into his radio, his voice sounding hollow and exhausted.
Moments later, the encrypted phone in Dante's pocket began to ring. He pulled it out with a heavy sigh, answering the call from his superior stationed back at the Ministry headquarters.
"Why did you halt the arrest? You had him boxed in on an isolated road! You are officially stripped of your command of this operation, effective immediately!" The furious voice on the other end screamed, loud enough to echo in the quiet aftermath of the ruined highway.
"The target is beyond conventional engagement. I am issuing a grim plea to dispatch the highest-tier Prime Forces. Standard units will be slaughtered if we pursue." Dante kept his tone grave, staring blankly at the smoking crater left by Kaelen's kinetic strike.
"Prime Forces? Stop making pathetic excuses for your own cowardice! Get your team back to base right now!" The superior rejected the plea outright, slamming the phone down and terminating the secure connection.
Dante lowered the phone slowly, staring worriedly at the ruined pavement. He dreaded the arrogant bureaucrats' ignorant next move, knowing with grim certainty that they were blindly provoking an unstoppable god of war.
Far away from the chaotic scene, Kaelen continued his steady drive. The towering skyscrapers of the inner city gave way to sprawling, empty factory grounds. He guided the blue car onto a secluded, traffic-less industrial road, the massive manufacturing plants on either side sitting silent and abandoned in the afternoon sun.
Half an hour ticked by in peaceful, undisturbed silence as he navigated the long, straight stretch of road.
Then, without any warning, a massive shadow eclipsed the sun above him.
A heavy, three-meter-tall steel street lamp suddenly plummeted straight from the clear sky above. It slammed downward with the devastating force of a meteor, brutally piercing straight through the hood of his car. The engine screamed a metallic death rattle as the thick pole crushed the block, shattering the windshield and sending a dangerous shower of safety glass raining into the cabin. The vehicle lurched to a brutal, grounding halt, thick black smoke billowing from the ruined front end into the sky.
Within the cabin, Kaelen narrowed his eyes, a suffocating, murderous aura erupting from his body.
