Breaking Point
Silas stepped forward through the lingering smoke to inspect the frail, bloodied captive firmly held by Kaelen. He squinted in the dim ambient light of the alleyway, cautiously studying the pathetic figure. Her limbs were terrifyingly thin, making her look more like a brittle corpse than a living threat. Her ragged clothes hung off her skeletal frame.
"Is she really the mastermind behind the Gore Briars remnant?" Silas asked, his voice laced with heavy skepticism.
Kaelen narrowed his eyes, his grip tightening like a steel vice on the prisoner's scrawny shoulder. "Be careful. Something is weird about this person."
Before Kaelen could fully voice his caution, the three red figures, previously frozen like statues from the flute's sudden silence, lunged forward. They moved with blinding, lightning speed, their massive frames tearing through the narrow space. The sheer force of their sudden charge cracked the concrete beneath their heavy boots, aiming to crush Kaelen into a bloody pulp.
Kaelen did not even blink. He raised his blade in a single, fluid motion. The sharp metal flickered under the ambient streetlights, catching a deadly gleam. He executed a flawless, invisible strike through the air, his movements so fast they blurred into a mere phantom slash.
In the very next second, the massive attackers fell apart. The blade effortlessly sliced their thick, mutated bodies into six perfectly severed pieces. Heavy chunks of meat and bone crashed onto the asphalt with a sickening thud. A pungent, nauseating stench of raw blood and rotting viscera instantly flooded the alley. It smelled like corpses left to bake in the scorching sun for days, a vile odor that clung to the back of the throat.
The frail captive spat out a massive mouthful of dark blood. Her scrawny body shuddered uncontrollably, reacting to the severe backlash of the severed psychic connection with her fallen puppets.
Silas pinched his nose in disgust, waving his free hand to dispel the rotting, metallic smell. He turned to the subordinate Rangers standing on standby. "Clean up this disgusting gore. Get every piece out of my sight before the local authorities arrive."
Securing a harsh grip on the coughing prisoner, Silas dragged her away and slipped into the cover of the dense night darkness.
Half an hour later, inside a deserted, echoing industrial building on the outskirts of Zenith, Silas stood before his captive. The thin, heavily bloodied woman was bound securely to a rusty metal chair in the center of the vast concrete floor. The moonlight filtering through the shattered windows cast long, eerie shadows across the empty room, highlighting the dark stains already pooling beneath her boots.
Silas nonchalantly twirled a sharp dagger in his hand, letting the blade catch the pale light. He paced around the chair with slow, deliberate steps. "Is your name Rose?"
Rose lifted her heavy head. Despite her pale, weakened state, she spat bloody saliva onto the concrete floor. She glared at Silas with pure venom, her small eyes burning with unyielding malice. "You had better let me go right now unless you wish to die an ugly death."
Silas flicked his wrist, stopping the dagger's spin. He pressed the cold, flat edge of the blade against her cheek. "My blade begs to differ."
"If you anger my cult leader, you will taste true agony!" Rose screamed, straining against the thick ropes binding her wrists.
Kaelen stepped out from the heavy shadows at the side of the room. His footsteps made no sound on the dusty floor, his presence commanding an immediate, chilling silence. "What is your relationship with Conrad Ellis?"
Rose stubbornly ignored his authority, refusing to even look in his direction. She kept her hateful gaze fixed onto Silas.
A furious scowl overtook Silas's face. He stepped forward and drove his dagger down. He brutally sliced a thick chunk of flesh straight from her arm, carving through skin and muscle in one vicious motion.
Rose moaned in excruciating pain. Blood poured down her torn sleeve, dripping steadily onto the cold floor in a growing crimson puddle. She snapped her head up, fiercely maintaining her fierce hatred despite the agonizing wound. "My cult leader will inevitably avenge me! You are all dead men walking!"
Kaelen snorted coldly at her defiance. He stepped closer and unleashed a terrifying, invisible surge of energy from his core.
A blistering, oppressive heat wave instantly enveloped Rose. The sheer temperature twisted her facial features into a mask of pure agony. The blood vessels in her eyes burst, staining her sclera a terrifying, bloody red. The ambient moisture in the room vanished, making it feel as if Kaelen aimed to evaporate the very water directly from her body. Her skin turned an angry, painful scarlet as the boiling heat pressed against her raw flesh. The heat was so intense that her sweat turned to steam the moment it breached her pores.
Broken by the relentless torture, Rose gasped out a mouthful of boiling hot air. "Mercy! Please, I will talk!"
The suffocating heat receded just enough for her to draw a ragged, painful breath.
"Speak," Kaelen commanded.
Rose hung her head in defeat. "I offended the elders of my cult twelve years ago. I have been hiding in Zenith ever since to survive."
Silas glared at her, his dagger still dripping with her fresh blood. "Then why were Conrad's men looking for you?"
Rose cried out in a weak, raspy voice, tears of pain streaking down her dirty face. "I did not want anything to do with them! I only saw Conrad two years ago. Those three red figures relentlessly bugged me to help avenge him. I refused at first, but they would not leave me alone. They forced me to practice my forbidden techniques with them to prepare for the fight."
Silas rolled his eyes. He sheathed his dagger with a sharp click, feeling utterly disappointed. "What a waste of effort. We chased a ghost and wasted our night on old grudges."
Kaelen remained silent. His eyes gleamed with a sudden, cold realization. He turned to Silas, his mind racing through past intelligence reports. "Do you remember the file from last year? It stated that the notorious Venom Sect always had massive amounts of funds that mysteriously went missing every year."
The moment Kaelen mentioned the Venom Sect, Rose's weak, defeated facade vanished.
With a burst of desperate, adrenaline-fueled energy, she snapped her heavy rope bonds. She dashed madly toward the shattered window, her boots pounding frantically against the concrete floor in a frantic bid for survival.
"You are not going anywhere!" Silas shouted, lunging forward to intercept her.
Before Rose could leap out into the night air, a sphere of blazing fire flew across the room. The fiery projectile pierced straight through her chest cavity, leaving a gaping, burning hole in her torso.
Rose froze in her tracks. The flames expanded rapidly, and she burned from the inside out. Her flesh sizzled as the fire consumed her vital organs. She turned her head, her bursting, bloody eyes glaring one last time. "The Venom Sect will never let you go!"
She fell limp, collapsing into a charred, smoking heap on the floor.
Silas scoffed mockingly at the dead woman's threat. His eyes filled with a menacing, violent light as he stared at her ruined remains. "The Venom Sect? I will show them what a real nightmare looks like sooner or later."
Standing over the burnt corpse, Kaelen's frown deepened significantly. The revelation of the Venom Sect's direct involvement complicated matters far beyond a simple street gang rivalry.
Meanwhile, back at the Vance Residence in Oak Lane, the atmosphere in the living room was thick with heavy disbelief.
Edgar and Clara sat side by side on the plush living room sofa. They stared in stunned, heavy silence at the towering stacks of banknotes neatly arranged on the low coffee table. The massive sum totaled a staggering six million. They had been sitting in this exact posture for over ten minutes, unable to process the sheer volume of wealth sitting right in front of them.
Clara reached out with a trembling hand and touched the crisp, newly minted paper money. She murmured in a daze, her voice barely a whisper. "Edgar, am I dreaming?"
Edgar slowly recovered from his initial shock. He glanced at his wife, his heart growing heavy with lingering guilt over the severe financial suffering she had endured during his sudden bankruptcy. He covered her hand with his own, offering a reassuring squeeze. "You are not dreaming. The money is indeed ours to keep, unless Victor suddenly regrets the decision and demands it back."
Clara pulled her hand back and frowned, her mind racing to find a logical explanation. "But why would a vicious gangster like Victor offer such lavish gifts out of nowhere? It makes no sense for someone like him to hand over six million without a hidden agenda."
Edgar leaned back against the plush cushions. He quietly thought of a familiar, determined young face. The timeline and the sheer audacity of the act pointed in one clear direction. Kaelen must be behind this massive compensation. Only someone with his terrifying martial strength could force a local underground boss to cough up millions in reparations.
Clara, however, had a very different theory brewing in her mind. A smug expression crossed her face. The Vance family could never orchestrate such a payout on their own, but her own family certainly had the hidden business connections to pull it off. She suspected her cousin's secret involvement in pressing the gang for financial compensation.
"It must be my family helping us from the shadows," Clara declared softly, her eyes shining with renewed pride.
As a crisp ringtone echoed, Clara stared at her phone screen, her mouth slightly opened in awe. "Cousin?"
