Silent Slaughter

The cold downpour lashed against the cracked pavement in relentless sheets, turning the desolate ruins of Oak Lane into a bleak and suffocating wasteland. Through the heavy curtain of rain, two nondescript vans tore down the narrow street. Their tires shrieked against the wet asphalt before slamming to a halt just outside the Vance family’s three-story house.

Zane Vang shoved the passenger door open. He stepped out into the raging storm, his thick fingers wrapped tightly around the grip of a hunting rifle. Rainwater streamed down his scarred face as he flashed a sinister smirk at the quiet, unsuspecting home. He raised a hand, signaling his pack of heavily armed thugs to filter out of the vehicles. Dozens of stern-faced young men poured into the muddy street, gripping machetes and firearms with lethal intent.

"Move in and leave no one alive," Zane ordered. His voice cut through the drumming rain with chilling authority.

The men advanced like a pack of starved wolves, creeping toward the property with practiced stealth. Zane hung back a step, scanning the dark perimeter to ensure their trap remained secure. His sharp eyes caught a subtle shift in the darkness. A solitary, shadowy figure stood motionless beneath the dense canopy of an old, towering oak tree at the edge of the ruins. The watcher blended seamlessly with the night, offering no indication of identity or purpose.

Zane felt a flicker of annoyance rather than fear. He casually gestured to two of his men bringing up the rear.

"Send two people over there to get rid of that watcher. Make sure not to leave a single trace."

The two thugs nodded in unison, breaking off from the main group and stalking toward the dense oak tree with their weapons drawn. The rest of the hit squad continued their silent approach toward the Vance household, waiting for the signal to breach the front door.

Minutes dragged by, marked only by the heavy downpour and the distant roll of thunder. Zane narrowed his eyes, waiting for his men to return to formation.

A horrific, wet thud echoed through the rain.

Two heavy, round objects dropped from the obscured branches of the oak tree. They hit the muddy ground with a sickening splash and rolled rapidly toward the hit squad. The objects bumped against Zane’s heavy combat boots and came to a dead stop in the mud.

The metallic tang of fresh blood mixed with the scent of wet earth. Zane looked down, his sinister smirk vanishing in an instant. The severed heads of his two men stared up at him, their faces twisted into masks of pure, unadulterated terror.

Panic rippled through the ranks of the thugs. Before a single man could raise a weapon or scream, the shadowy figure materialized from the curtain of rain.

Moving with the unnatural speed of a phantom, the figure closed the distance in a fraction of a second. He reached out with bare hands, grabbing the throats of the closest thugs. The sickening crunch of snapping necks echoed like rapid gunfire. Zane tried to raise his hunting rifle, but his strength vanished. A vise-like grip clamped around his throat, lifting him inches off the ground. He kicked his legs helplessly, gasping for air as the pressure crushed his windpipe. In his final moments, he stared into the cold, emotionless void of his killer’s eyes.

The distinct crack of bone ended his life. Zane’s lifeless body joined the others on the wet pavement.

More unseen operatives drifted out from the shadows of the oak tree. Working in absolute, chilling silence, the Phantom Rangers dragged the butchered corpses away. They hauled the bodies into the darkness and used the torrential downpour to wash the blood from the street, restoring the eerie, undisturbed quiet of the lane as if the hit squad had never existed.

Miles away, the fluorescent lights of the Iron Boxing Gym in Sapphire Tower buzzed with intense energy. Dozens of burly, aggressive fighters pummeled heavy bags and sparred in the elevated rings.

Victor Carmine sat on a leather bench near the center of the facility, wiping sweat from his thick brow with a towel. Despite the secure environment and his army of fighters, a sudden, suffocating dread gripped his chest. A cold sweat broke out along his spine. The inexplicable paranoia gnawed at his nerves, forcing him to stand up abruptly.

He pointed a thick finger at his bespectacled subordinate standing nearby. "Call Zane right now. Find out the progress of the mission at Oak Lane."

The subordinate quickly pulled out his phone and dialed the number. He pressed the device to his ear, his brow furrowing as the line rang endlessly into the void. He lowered the phone, looking at his boss with a confused expression.

"Mr. Carmine, the phone is just ringing out. No one is answering."

"Keep calling him!" Victor barked.

A deafening explosion shattered the atmosphere.

The reinforced steel doors of the gym blasted off their hinges, twisting into mangled scrap metal. They crashed onto the polished hardwood floor, kicking up a thick cloud of dust and debris. Dozens of ferocious fighters stopped dead in their tracks, their eyes widening in sheer disbelief. They turned their aggressive glares toward the ruined entryway, ready to tear the intruders limb from limb.

Instead of an immediate attack, a horrific object rolled rapidly across the floor. It left a thick trail of blood in its wake before bumping against the leg of a training bench near Victor.

Victor stared down. It was Zane’s severed head. The veteran killer’s face remained permanently frozen in an expression of sheer terror.

The gym plunged into a heavy, suffocating silence. A collective gasp rippled through the thugs as they recognized their most lethal enforcer reduced to a bloody prop.

Stepping through the ruined doorway was Kaelen. He wore a dark, dripping trench coat, his boots crunching against the scattered debris. His eyes swept across the room, projecting an aura of cold indifference to the dozens of armed men surrounding him.

Victor’s initial shock morphed into a boiling, uncontrollable rage. The sight of his most trusted lieutenant slaughtered sent a rush of blood to his face. He balled his hands into massive fists, glaring at the lone intruder.

"I have never seen you before! Which area are you from, and who gave you the guts to cross me?" Victor bellowed.

Kaelen paused his steady advance. He looked down at the floor, deliberately placing the sole of his heavy combat boot directly onto Zane’s severed head.

"Oak Lane." Kaelen answered, his voice devoid of any human emotion.

He shifted his weight downward. A loud, stomach-churning crack ensued. The skull caved under the immense pressure, splattering dark blood and grey brain matter across the polished floorboards.

Victor’s face twisted into a mask of furious hatred. He pointed at Kaelen and roared at the top of his lungs. "Everyone, attack him at once! Tear him to pieces!"

The brutes unleashed a unison roar, charging toward the lone man with lethal intent.

Before the swarm could even close half the distance, a gargantuan figure dashed through the ruined doorway. Gideon entered the fray like a ferocious demon unleashed from the depths of hell. His massive frame intercepted the leading wave of thugs with devastating impact.

Gideon extended an iron-like hand, wrapping his thick fingers around the nearest brute's neck. With a casual squeeze, he crushed the windpipe, sending blood gushing from the dying man's mouth. Without breaking stride, the giant spun and drove a devastating punch into the chest of an incoming attacker. The sickening sound of splintering ribs echoed through the room as the thug’s ribcage caved in, his body flying backward from the sheer force of the blow.

Panic flashed in the eyes of a heavily tattooed fighter. In a desperate bid for survival, the thug grabbed a thirty-pound metal-alloy dumbbell from a nearby rack. He hurled the solid metal weight directly at Gideon's face.

Gideon did not flinch or dodge. He simply pulled his arm back and met the incoming projectile with a brutal punch of his own.

The collision rang out like a bell. The impact sent the dumbbell crashing to the floor, embedding it deep into the hardwood. The tattooed thug stared in paralyzed terror. A deep, perfect imprint of Gideon's knuckles sat embedded in the center of the solid metal alloy.

Before the thug could process the impossible feat of strength, Gideon’s fist filled his vision.

A dense, blood-red mist quickly filled the Iron Boxing Gym. Gideon moved systematically, turning the spacious training facility into a gruesome slaughterhouse. Body parts snapped, and fresh blood painted the walls. The agonizing screams of dying men drowned out the buzzing fluorescent lights.

Within moments, the remaining handful of surviving thugs broke. They scrambled away from the slaughter, cowering in the far corners of the gym, shivering like terrified quails in a thunderstorm.

Standing alone in the center of the room, Victor felt his intimidating, boss-like aura shatter into a million pieces. The color drained from his face as he stared at the mountain of broken bodies and the giant orchestrating the bloodbath. He audibly gulped, his throat bone-dry, before shifting his terrified gaze back to Kaelen.

The black-clad man had not moved a single inch during the massacre.

Victor breathed in the heavy, blood-scented air, taking a hesitant step backward.

"I swear I have never seen you before. What is the meaning of this attack? What do you want from me?" Victor stammered.

A lethal glare flashed across Kaelen's eyes. The temperature in the room seemed to plummet.

"Half an hour ago, you ordered a band of killers to Oak Lane."

The words hit Victor like a physical blow. His expression contorted in sudden realization, followed instantly by profound horror. The pieces clicked together in his mind. The destroyed hit squad, the target location, the timing.

"You... Are you Edgar's eldest son?" Victor choked out.

Kaelen emitted a surging, oppressive aura. It washed over the room like a physical weight, pressing the remaining air out of Victor's lungs. The warlord stared at the crime boss like a beast preparing to devour its prey.

"I initially planned to wait two days before paying a visit," Kaelen snarled.

In a blinding flash, Kaelen disappeared from Victor's line of sight.

Less than a second later, a loud gunshot echoed through the gym. A bullet pierced the hardwood floorboards exactly where Kaelen had just been standing, sending wooden splinters flying into the air.

However, another gunshot instantly followed, ripping through the air, aiming straight toward Kaelen!
