Unveiling the Chairman

The heavy mahogany doors of the expansive meeting room clicked shut, sealing the suffocating tension inside. The click of the latch echoed loudly in the otherwise silent space. Seraphine strolled to the head of the massive table. Her stilettos sank into the plush carpet, muffling her deliberate, unhurried steps. She pulled out the high-backed chairman’s seat and settled into it. She rested her arms on the leather armrests with a relaxed, bored demeanor that struck raw terror into the heart of Evander Nash.

The crushing clarity of his situation finally hit him. His mind raced as the pieces snapped together. The elusive, powerful global Chairman of the World Benevolence Committee was sitting right before him. He had just ordered this exact woman to kneel on the lobby floor.

Evander’s legs gave out. His knees hit the carpet with a heavy thud.

"Chairman, I swear I didn’t know whom I was talking to in the lobby. I was blind! Please, I beg you, forgive my insolence." Evander groveled. He pressed his forehead practically to the floor, his shoulders shaking. He did not dare to look up into her cold, calculating eyes.

Seraphine rested her chin on her steepled fingers. She gazed down at the pathetic, trembling man with a predator's calm patience.

"Mr. Nash, didn’t you boldly ask me to kneel on the floor and apologize to Ms. Giselle just a few moments ago? Why are you kneeling before I do?" She asked the question with a soft, lethal purr.

Desperate to save his own skin and his lucrative career, Evander ruthlessly threw Giselle under the bus. He raised a trembling hand and slapped his own face hard in repentance, the sharp smack ringing through the room.

"It is my fault for not recognizing you! I only shielded her because I was intimidated by the combined backing of the Vanguard and Hawthorne families. The Chairman knows everything you did! Our committee investigated what the Hawthorne family did for you to falsify your records. I cannot help you cover it up anymore!" He blurted out the confession, turning his desperate gaze on Giselle and ignoring her furious, wide-eyed glares.

"Evander, I will rip your mouth off your face if you dare say another word!" Giselle hissed, her carefully maintained facade cracking under the pressure.

Evander kept his mouth shut, curling in on himself like a frightened animal. He could not afford to offend either side, but the Chairman held his immediate fate in her manicured hands.

A cold spike of pure panic seized Giselle’s chest. Her extensive, hidden history of faking charitable donations and stealing credit was on the verge of being exposed to the public. If that happened, her meticulously crafted, angelic persona would shatter into a million irreparable pieces. Kaelen Vanguard hated deception. He would permanently despise her if he found out the truth. The very thought made her knees weak and her stomach churn.

Trembling with a mix of terror and rage, she leaned toward her aide. Gideon stood beside her, nursing his crushed hand with a pale, grimacing face.

"Do not breathe a word of this to Kaelen. You will keep this disaster a secret, do you understand? Go wait for me in the hall." She urgently whispered the fierce command, her nails digging into her palms.

Gideon bowed his head, too pained to argue, and quickly slipped out of the room.

Giselle forced herself to compose her features. She smoothed down the front of her designer dress, took a deep breath to steady her racing heart, and turned her attention back to the groveling director.

"Mr. Nash, please leave. I have important business to discuss with your chairman." She stated, trying to project a sliver of authority to hide her mounting fear.

Seraphine flicked her gaze to Silas, silently issuing an order.

Silas stepped forward. He hauled the loudly pleading, weeping Evander off the floor by his collar and sternly escorted him out of the room. The heavy doors clicked shut once more, leaving the space steeped in silence.

They were alone.

Giselle confronted Seraphine directly. She decided to play her only remaining card, hoping vast amounts of money could fix the disastrous shift in power. She lifted her chin, putting on a brave front as she met the Chairman's cold stare.

"Name your price. Let us skip the games. How much cash do you want for the title of Global Ambassador for Philanthropy?" She demanded, her voice echoing slightly in the large room.

A genuine chuckle escaped Seraphine's lips. The sound was bright, but it lacked any real warmth.

"Are you seriously trying to bribe me openly, right in my own office?" Seraphine asked, genuinely amused by the sheer audacity of the woman standing across the table.

Giselle dismissed the heavy moral implications without a second thought. She leaned against the edge of the mahogany table, banking on her financial leverage to secure her future.

"Ten million dollars. I am the only socially suitable and recognizable candidate left in Oakhaven anyway. You will get the cash, and I will get the glory. It is a perfect, mutually beneficial win-win situation." She argued with a straight face, as if purchasing a coveted global title was just another everyday transaction.

Seraphine merely chuckled louder. She treated the multi-million dollar bribe like a hilarious, poorly delivered joke.

"I see. So the immense glory that finally helps you break into the Vanguard family is only worth this tiny amount to you, Ms. Giselle." Seraphine mocked, her eyes glinting with dark amusement.

A sudden, icy chill ran down Giselle's spine. She stared at the woman's mocking eyes, and the distinct, terrifying aura from their encounter at the cemetery flashed in her mind. The pieces began to shift into a disturbing picture. Her mind grew paranoid, connecting dots that fueled her panic. Was this a targeted, orchestrated attack? She slammed her hands flat on the polished mahogany table.

"Was it you? Are you the one who exposed everything on the internet? What is your game here? Are you secretly tied to Seraphine Hawthorne? Are you trying to avenge Mr. Alistair?" She demanded hysterically, her voice rising to a shrill pitch that bounced off the paneled walls.

Seraphine leaned back in her high-backed chair, unfazed by the frantic, screaming accusations. She tapped a manicured nail against the leather armrest in a slow, rhythmic beat.

"Ms. Giselle, you think too highly of yourself. I am merely using my unchecked power as Chairman. I can ruin your life with a single phone call. Do you think I need a grand conspiracy to do so?" Seraphine calmly reminded her, her voice smooth and unyielding.

Giselle felt cornered like a rat in a trap. She was terrified of her massive fraudulent donations coming to light in the media. The destruction of her reputation meant losing Kaelen forever. She bit her lower lip hard enough to draw a bead of copper-tasting blood, the pain grounding her racing thoughts.

"Thirty million dollars. That is more than enough! Do not be greedy!" She reluctantly raised her desperate offer, her knuckles turning white as she gripped the edge of the table.

Seraphine’s smile vanished in an instant. Her gaze turned to solid ice, freezing the very air in the room.

"One hundred million dollars. Transfer the money directly to our account today. Otherwise, do not even think about getting the title." Seraphine demanded coldly, her tone leaving zero room for negotiation or debate.

Giselle's face went pale with shock at the astronomical figure. Her breath caught in her throat.

"This is literal daylight robbery! Aren’t you afraid of being exposed to the board for extortion?" She hissed, her voice shaking with a potent mix of disbelief and fury.

Seraphine countered effortlessly, her posture remaining relaxed and dominant.

"I am not afraid in the slightest. You can certainly give it a try and report me. But if you do, your entire scandal of faking your donations will be known to everyone in the city by nightfall."

Giselle swallowed her immense, burning humiliation. She realized she was trapped. The Chairman held all the cards, and the threat of total exposure was a sharp blade pressed right against her throat. She gritted her teeth, her jaw aching from the intense pressure.

"Fine. One hundred million dollars." She agreed to the staggering sum, her voice dripping with deep resentment.

"Ms. Giselle is such a decisive person." Seraphine praised flatly, devoid of sincerity.

"Do not try to flatter me. I will remember this." Giselle snapped, her eyes narrowing into dangerous slits.

She aggressively grabbed her designer handbag from the table. She silently, venomously vowed to exact her ultimate revenge on this arrogant woman the very moment she officially married Kaelen and gained access to his vast resources. She would tear this Chairman down from her high horse and make her pay for this humiliation.

She turned around swiftly to storm out of the room, desperate to escape the suffocating, oppressive presence of the Chairman.

Her path was abruptly and intimidatingly blocked by Silas's broad chest.
