Flirting with Danger
Charmed by Seraphine’s breathtaking looks and disarmed by her feigned confusion, Rhys acted on pure instinct. His professional demeanor vanished in an instant, replaced by the eager posture of a smitten man. Without a second thought, he shoved the heavy boy in his arms straight into Kaelen's chest.
Kaelen let out a low, rough grunt. His arms snapped up to catch the child before the boy could slide to the polished linoleum floor. The billionaire stared at his family doctor in stunned, unblinking silence. Holding the disguised Ronan awkwardly against his tailored suit, Kaelen looked as though someone had just handed him a ticking time bomb.
Rhys paid his boss no mind. He reached up and adjusted his thin designer glasses, making sure they sat perfectly on the bridge of his nose. He took a confident step forward and flashed his most charismatic, practiced smile at the striking woman before him.
"I'm Rhys. Please don't misunderstand, this is not my son. I'm still very much single. In fact, I take in a seven-figure salary monthly and have excellent benefits. Why don't we be friends?"
Safely tucked against Kaelen's rigid chest, young Ronan peered over the man's broad shoulder. The boy shot a quiet wink at his mother. In his young, strategic mind, he approved of the kind, albeit comically simple-minded, doctor as a potential suitor. Rhys might not be a terrifying billionaire, but he seemed safe and eager to please.
Ignored by his own employee and seething at the blatant display of flirting, Kaelen emanated a dark, suffocating aura. The air in the corridor grew icy, heavy with his unspoken rage. His jaw ticked. He shot Rhys a murderous death stare that could freeze water.
"You have exactly ten seconds to catch up to me! Or else you can say goodbye forever to your lucrative job with the Vanguard Family!"
His voice was laced with pure venom, cutting through the quiet hospital hallway like a serrated blade. Kaelen turned on his heel and marched toward the elevators. His long, angry strides ate up the distance, the heavy thud of his expensive leather shoes echoing off the stark white walls. He carried Ronan with a tight, possessive grip, eager to put distance between himself and this maddening woman.
Frightened by the immediate threat to his prestigious livelihood, Rhys abandoned his romantic pursuit. He dropped his charismatic smile and sprinted down the hallway after his boss. His white coat billowed behind him. Despite his panicked dash to save his career, a foolish grin stretched across his face. He felt a deep sense of satisfaction. Earlier that morning, he had overheard Seraphine mentioning her phone number to the head nurse at the reception desk. He had managed to memorize the digits, securing a small victory in his mind.
Seraphine watched the chaotic duo disappear behind the closing elevator doors. She exhaled a long breath, releasing the tension tightly coiled in her shoulders. She turned and slipped back into the sterile hospital room. The heavy wooden door clicked shut, and she threw the deadbolt at once, sealing herself in. The quiet, rhythmic hum of the medical equipment provided a stark contrast to the explosive confrontation outside.
She pulled a custom-built smartphone from her pocket and booted up her encrypted line. She dialed Silas to investigate the true reason behind Kaelen’s sudden, aggressive hospital visit. The call connected within three rings.
"Silas, look into Kaelen's movements here today. Why did he bring Ronan in for an examination? Dig into the hospital network and tell me what they found."
"Give me just a second, Ms. Seraphine."
On the other end of the line, the rapid clacking of Silas’s fingers flying across his mechanical keyboard filled the silence. A few moments later, he let out a short, incredulous laugh.
"Mr. Vanguard suspected that Ronan has severe ADHD due to his bizarre behavior, so they had him examined! Apparently, Ronan drew a massive giant tortoise on Kaelen's face with a permanent marker. The staff had a hard time keeping a straight face. Oh yeah, and the medical lab confirms they expedited full DNA testing too. The results are pending but marked as top priority."
Seraphine’s face darkened at the mention of the DNA test. A sharp flare of panic gripped her chest. Her breath hitched in her throat. She squeezed her eyes shut, forcing her racing heart to slow down. If Kaelen saw those results, he would know the truth. The initial shock faded, replaced by a cold, calculating calm as her brilliant mind worked through the problem.
She found solace in the twisted nature of her current reality. The paternity mystery would reveal Ronan was indeed his biological son, but it would leave Kaelen baffled on how that was possible. Given her disguised identity and the tangled web of the past five years, the sheer impossibility of the timeline would keep the arrogant billionaire distracted. He would be chasing ghosts and hunting for logical explanations for quite a while, buying her the precious time she needed.
She slipped her phone into her pocket and turned her attention back to the hospital bed.
Cassian had finally awoken.
The little boy looked terribly small and fragile amidst the tangle of stark white hospital sheets. His face and arms were wrapped in thick bandages, hiding the worst of the scrapes. Dark purple bruises marred his pale, delicate skin. Terrified of his unfamiliar surroundings, the child shrank back against the pillows. His chest heaved with shallow breaths. He clamped his mouth shut tight, fighting back his rising anxiety with every ounce of his remaining strength. He pulled his knees to his chest, curling into a defensive ball to protect himself from whatever new horror awaited him.
Seraphine felt a sharp pang of sorrow tear through her chest. She let her guarded, tough exterior melt away. She approached the bed slowly, keeping her hands open and visible to show she meant no harm. Her footsteps were light, making almost no sound on the tiled floor. Her voice dropped to a gentle, maternal cadence.
"Don't worry, Cass. I'm not here to harm you. Believe me, with me around, no one will ever bully you any longer."
Cassian flinched at the sound, but then his wide, fearful eyes locked onto her face. He blinked, processing the sound. He recognized the warm, soothing voice. It was the exact woman who had bravely saved him from the dark, terrifying woods after Giselle had pushed him down the steep embankment. His red, bloodshot eyes filled with stubborn, silent tears. A single drop spilled over his bruised cheek, soaking into the pristine white bandage near his jaw.
"You are safe now. Let me check your bandages, and then we can get out of here," she murmured, keeping her distance until he offered a tiny, hesitant nod.
At the mere mention of going home to the Vanguard estate, Cassian trembled. His tiny hands gripped the edge of the woolen blanket, his knuckles turning stark white. He shook his head in a panic, a silent, desperate plea begging her not to send him back to his father's cold, lonely residence.
Seraphine sat on the very edge of the mattress. She reached out and gently stroked his soft, messy hair.
"We are not going back there. We are going to my fortified private house. No one can hurt you there."
The boy’s frantic trembling slowed. He leaned slightly into her touch, exhaling a shaky, uneven breath.
Seraphine knew the clock was ticking. Kaelen was already suspicious of her presence in the building. He could piece the entire puzzle together if he somehow discovered the boy awake and recognized his distinct injuries. She stepped away from the bed and grabbed her phone again. She contacted Desmond, her underground medical contact who had inside access to the hospital's main system.
"Desmond, I need an immediate medical all-clear for my patient in room 412. Falsify the discharge papers and push them through the network."
She ended the call and dialed Silas again.
"Silas, arrange our swift, untraceable relocation. Have a discreet transport vehicle waiting at the underground loading dock. Do it under the cover of the hospital's afternoon shift change. We need to vanish before Vanguard circles back."
Meanwhile, across the city at the lavish Hawthorne residence, the atmosphere was poisonous.
Giselle screamed in a trembling rage. Her shrill voice echoed through the opulent master bedroom. She shoved crystal vases, imported makeup, and silver-framed photos off her vanity table in a blind fury. The heavy items crashed onto the hardwood floor. Glass shattered, sending jagged, dangerous shards flying across the plush Persian rug. Powders and expensive perfumes stained the polished wood, filling the room with a sickeningly sweet floral scent.
Gideon stood nervously in the doorway. He kept a safe distance from the flying debris, clutching a leather tablet tightly to his chest. He cleared his throat to report the latest disaster to his volatile employer.
"Ms. Giselle, a deeply funded, unknown enemy is fueling the online gossip with ill intent. The rumors are multiplying faster than our tech team can take them down. The fixers quoted us a staggering astronomical five hundred thousand dollars to manage the PR nightmare before the upcoming critical charity dinner."
Giselle spun around, her flawless face contorted into an ugly mask of desperation. Her chest heaved beneath her silk robe.
"My absence at the dinner will only give credence to the filthy gossip on the Internet! I cannot hide in this house!"
She paced across the room, her bare feet narrowly avoiding the broken glass. She chewed on her manicured thumbnail, her mind racing through her limited options. She needed to physically reach Cassian to ensure his silence, but her spies had just confirmed Kaelen tightened the armed security around the boy. She could not get within a mile of his hospital wing without drawing unwanted attention.
She stopped pacing and pointed a shaking, accusatory finger at her subordinate.
"Erase all digital and physical traces of the cemetery incident! I want those security tapes wiped clean. I want the ground swept for evidence."
She was banking her entire future on a fragile, unpredictable fact. That traumatized brat had not spoken a single word in five years. If she scrubbed the evidence, it would be her word against a mute child, and she knew Kaelen would always choose her over a broken boy.
Gideon nodded quickly, eager to deliver the one piece of good news he had left in his report.
"It is already in motion, Ms. Giselle. And you should know that Mr. Vanguard still trusts you despite the online rumors. He has not moved against you or questioned your whereabouts."
Giselle paused. The frantic, wild look in her eyes slowly faded into a cold, hardened stare. She reached up and wiped her tears away, smearing her expensive mascara across her cheekbones. She steeled her dark resolve. She would not let a faceless enemy online or a mute child ruin her grand plans. She turned toward the shattered mirror on the wall, glaring at her fractured reflection.
"Contact the charity committee right now. I don't care what it takes, I'll meet them myself tomorrow morning!"
She declared her intentions to the empty room. She was more than willing to risk everything she had to ensure her impending, powerful marriage into the Vanguard family. Nothing would stand in her way.
