The Forbidden Name
"Of course I'm worried!" Rhys retorted, his voice slicing through the thick, palpable tension filling the dimly lit study. He stood his ground in the center of the sprawling room, refusing to back down under Kaelen's piercing, glacial gaze. He gripped the crisp medical files so tightly his knuckles turned white. "Do you have any idea what Cass was up to earlier? I found him perched precariously on a high window ledge in a vacant room. The wind was howling, and one slip would have meant the end. When I pulled him back inside and demanded to know why he was holding a massive umbrella, he told me Giselle claimed it would miraculously help him fly if he jumped! Who knows what kind of tragedy we would be dealing with if I had not walked in at that exact second."
Kaelen remained seated behind his massive mahogany desk. His aristocratic expression instantly hardened into a mask of stone at the mention of the incident. Driven by a deeply ingrained sense of obligation to the woman he believed saved his life long ago, he did not hesitate to shield her from the accusation. "Giselle is Cass's aunt. She has always been devoted to him, and she would not do such a malicious thing. Instruct the servants to hide all of the umbrellas in the house immediately."
Rhys stared at the imposing billionaire in disbelief. A profound wave of disappointment washed over the doctor. He shook his head slowly, appalled by this blind, irrational support for a clearly dangerous woman. "You need to be wary of her. If she has ill intentions toward your son, hiding umbrellas is merely a band-aid on a bullet wound."
Receiving only a stubborn, stony glare from the man across the desk, Rhys threw his hands up. "Fine. Forget I said anything." He spun on his heel and stormed out of the stifling room in sheer frustration.
In the grand doorway, Rhys brushed past Declan. The head of security staggered for a brief second before rushing into the study, clutching an iPad tightly to his broad chest.
"We have an emergency, sir," Declan announced in a husky, urgent tone, coming to a halt before the mahogany desk.
Kaelen pinched the bridge of his nose, his dark mood souring even further. "Speak."
"The villa's elite, state-of-the-art security alarm system was expertly disabled. We suffered a total security lapse for a solid ten minutes without tripping a single fail-safe. I deployed men to sweep the entire estate, but we have found zero traces of suspicious activity or intruders."
Kaelen pushed himself out of his leather chair. The Vanguard family utilized the most advanced security network in the world, and a breach of this magnitude was unheard of. He paced toward the vast glass window, his mind racing through the sheer, impossible number of coincidences occurring that specific day. "I want heightened, armed security stationed around my son's wing tonight. Deploy the guards now. Furthermore, I want a comprehensive background check on the mysterious, infuriating woman from the cemetery. Check if she is responsible for this breach."
Declan hesitated, shifting his weight nervously. Beads of sweat formed along his brow as he glanced down at his tablet. "Sir, we have not found anything linking her to the system failure yet. The woman is a ghost. All we have learned so far is that her name is Seraphine Hawthorne."
"Seraphine Hawthorne?" Kaelen bellowed, his deep voice bouncing off the mahogany walls. A vicious scowl twisted his sharp features, morphing his handsome face into a mask of pure, unadulterated rage.
Declan swallowed hard, hastily attempting to de-escalate the volatile situation. "It is merely a bizarre coincidence, sir. They share the same name, but they look nothing alike. It is logically and physically impossible for a woman who unequivocally died in police custody five years ago to resurrect looking and acting different."
Kaelen slammed his fist onto the solid wood of his desk, making the heavy crystal paperweights rattle. "There is something wrong with her. I want a thorough, scorched-earth investigation. Dig up everything."
He refused to drop the matter. Even with her drastically different physical appearance, this new Seraphine managed to make his heart race uncontrollably. She suffocated him in a painfully familiar way that only his late, despised wife ever could. The sheer proximity to her at the cemetery had stirred ghosts of the past he preferred to keep buried beneath the earth.
Declan studied Kaelen’s thunderous expression, taking a cautious step back before tentatively offering the tablet. "Understood, sir. There is one other pressing matter. Massive trending online rumors are targeting Ms. Giselle's charity tonight. It is dominating all social media platforms and the PR team is requesting guidance. Shall I deploy our men to handle the fallout?"
Kaelen barely glanced at the glowing screen. He tossed the expensive tablet aside onto the leather sofa. "Do not bother me with trivial annoyances. Leave it."
"Yes, sir," Declan muttered, quickly backing out of the room and shutting the door.
Meanwhile, just outside the thick, soundproofed study doors, little Ronan pressed his ear flat against the cool wood. His tiny fists clenched tightly at his sides, his knuckles turning white. He was furious that this man was targeting his mother.
*What a bastard! How dare he send people to check on Mommy?* Ronan thought angrily. *I will never let him harm her.*
He shifted his weight, trying to find a better angle to listen through the heavy oak. Suddenly, the door swung outward without a second of warning.
Losing his delicate balance, Ronan tumbled forward. He sprawled face-first onto the plush carpet of the study. He scrambled up in a flash, throwing his arms forward to tightly latch onto Kaelen’s tailored pant leg before the towering man could step over him.
Kaelen looked down, his stern, unyielding demeanor instantly softening. A rare crack appeared in his imposing armor as he gazed at his newly vocal son. The boy was offering an affectionate, spontaneous embrace. It was a stark contrast to the silent, withdrawn child he had known for the past five years.
Desperate to construct a believable cover story for eavesdropping in the middle of the night, Ronan looked up through his dark lashes. He widened his eyes, making them look impossibly adorable and innocent. "Can you sleep with me tonight, Daddy?"
Ronan waited for the swift, cold rejection. Based on the distant, terrible father-son dynamic Rhys had mentioned, and the thorough investigations his mother had run, Kaelen was supposed to push him away without a second thought.
Instead, Kaelen crouched down to meet the boy's eye level. He silently decided the fragile boy desperately needed comfort and a watchful eye after the day's traumatic events. He gave a firm nod. "All right. Let us go."
Ronan was thoroughly stunned into silence. He blinked up at the towering billionaire, his grand manipulation plan momentarily derailed by the unexpected agreement. Kaelen reached down, gently scooping the small boy into his strong arms. Ronan rested his chin on the man's broad shoulder, deciding he would just have to make this uncomfortable sacrifice for his mother's sake.
The following morning, the bright sun broke through the heavy clouds, casting a warm, golden glow over Seraphine’s hidden safehouse. She shifted under the thick down comforter, waking to a soft text alert buzzing steadily from her encrypted phone on the nightstand.
She reached out, rubbing the last remnants of sleep from her eyes. Opening the secure message thread, her breath caught in her throat. A quiet laugh slipped past her lips as the high-resolution photograph fully loaded on the glowing screen.
It was a picture of a deeply sleeping Kaelen Vanguard. His handsome, aristocratic face was thoroughly defaced. A massive, crudely drawn giant tortoise sat right across his forehead and cheeks, etched in thick, undeniable permanent marker. The stark contrast between the formidable billionaire's peaceful slumber and the ridiculous doodle was too much to bear.
Another soft buzz vibrated against her palm.
*Mommy, the bastard has sent someone to investigate you,* the follow-up text warned in rapid succession. *Please be careful since I am not there to protect you.*
Seraphine smiled, tracing her thumb affectionately over the digital text. Her heart swelled with pride at her son's fierce loyalty.
Seconds later, a new image popped onto the screen. It was an adorable, cheeky selfie of Ronan grinning widely, his dark eyes sparkling with uncontainable mischief.
*I will be back after making his life miserable for a few days. There is no need to worry about me. I can take care of myself. Don't miss me, love you!*
