The Clever Imposter
The cramped hospital room erupted in a chaotic wave of astonishment as a burly bodyguard in a crisp black suit dragged a small, squirming little boy into the harsh fluorescent light. The sterile air grew thick with immediate bewilderment. Every eye in the tight space darted back and forth. The onlookers looked at the bruised, unconscious child hooked up to IV lines on the medical bed, and then stared at the sudden, impossible appearance of a second Cassian Vanguard standing by the doorway.
Upon being unceremoniously set down on the cold linoleum floor, Ronan scanned the room with sharp, observant eyes. His gaze swept past the towering bodyguards and instantly locked onto the familiar, elegant figure of his mother, Seraphine. A jolt of pure panic shot through his tiny frame. Lightheaded with sudden fear, his little knees momentarily buckled beneath him, and he swayed on his feet. He had concocted a brilliant, impulsive plan to shake off his mother's trained pursuers by posing as the missing Cassian. Now, he realized the stunt had backfired in the worst possible way. He had just delivered himself on a silver platter right into her lap.
Before his racing mind could formulate an escape route or spin a plausible excuse to save his skin, Declan bounded forward. The assistant broke the tense silence, hoisting the boy high up into the air. His face glowed with sheer, unadulterated joy.
"You're all right, Cassian!" Declan exclaimed loudly.
He dismissed the disfigured, motionless boy lying just feet away on the hospital bed as an irrelevant mistake. Suspended in the assistant's tight grip, Ronan shifted his gaze toward Kaelen. He took in the towering, intimidating presence of the man standing in the center of the room. This had to be Kaelen Vanguard, the man he suspected to be his biological father. Ronan realized there was no turning back now. If he exposed the truth, he would subject his mother to Kaelen's immediate wrath. Ronan gritted his teeth. He decided to commit to the dangerous charade.
Wriggling free from Declan's hold, Ronan hit the floor running. He mustered every ounce of courage he possessed and threw his small arms tight around Kaelen's long, tailored leg. He buried his face against the expensive wool fabric.
"I miss you so much, Daddy!" Ronan cried out. He injected his voice with a perfect pitch of childish longing, making sure to sound as desperate as possible.
Kaelen froze in place. The ruthless billionaire stared down at the boy clinging to his leg with a deeply puzzled, uncomprehending expression. The scent of cold rain and expensive cologne surrounded them.
"Cass?" Kaelen uttered. The single syllable hung heavy with disbelief as his dark eyes narrowed in confusion.
"That's me, Daddy. Look carefully, I'm your son! The boy on the bed is a stranger!" Ronan replied with a remarkably straight face. He tilted his head up to meet Kaelen's dark, searching eyes without a single hint of fear.
Standing nearby, Declan was floored. His jaw practically hit the floor as he stared at the boy. The real Cassian suffered from severe, crippling autism. He had been mute since early childhood, incapable of uttering even a single word despite the best medical treatments money could buy. Kaelen had hired reputable doctors worldwide, yet no one could treat the boy's condition. Now, this child was speaking with perfect clarity.
"When did you learn how to speak, Cassian?" Declan blurted out, unable to hide his raw shock.
Caught off guard by this critical piece of medical history, Ronan scrambled internally for a lie. He had no idea his twin was nonverbal.
"A miracle doctor I met while I was lost cured my vocal cords! I can finally talk now!" Ronan claimed in a steady, confident tone. He nodded his head fervently to sell the fabrication.
Despite the bizarre, overnight change in the boy's entire demeanor and speech capabilities, Kaelen stared at the flawless, identical face looking up at him. He could not deny the genetic evidence standing right by his feet. This child shared his exact features. However, Kaelen's mind remained coiled tight with violent suspicion regarding Seraphine's actions at the cemetery earlier that day. Lifting his head, Kaelen pointed a sharp, accusatory finger directly at Seraphine.
"Do you know her?" Kaelen demanded of the boy.
Ronan feigned total ignorance. He blinked his large, innocent eyes as he looked over at his mother.
"I have never seen her in my life. Daddy, why do you refuse to let her go? Are you interested in her?" Ronan asked. The cheeky, audacious question hung in the tense air of the ward.
Kaelen scoffed aloud. The sound dripped with pure disdain. He leaned down and effortlessly scooped Ronan up into his strong arms, securing the boy against his broad chest. Turning his back on Seraphine without a second glance, Kaelen walked straight toward the open doorway.
"Let's go home. Stay far away from a woman like her, Cassian. She's a liar!" Kaelen spat. The venom in his deep voice provided a clear indication that his long-standing, deep-seated hatred for the name Seraphine was flaring up with renewed vigor. He recalled how she had deceived him in the past, and anger thrummed through his veins.
Peering over Kaelen's broad shoulder as they exited the cramped room, Ronan locked eyes with Seraphine. He dropped the innocent act for a brief second and secretly mouthed a silent, desperate apology to his mother. He promised himself in his heart that he would only return to her side after teaching this arrogant bastard of a father a painful lesson. He could not wait to reunite with his family, but first, he had a score to settle.
Watching the Vanguard family's abrupt departure, Seraphine stood rooted to the spot. She forcefully swallowed her intense, boiling frustration. She seethed inwardly, furious at Ronan's reckless, dangerous impersonation stunt. How dare he put himself in such grave danger right under Kaelen's nose! She prayed to whatever gods were listening that his quick wit and adaptability would keep his true identity hidden from Kaelen's sharp intellect. Things would become infinitely more complicated if Kaelen discovered he had another son.
Slowly, the chaotic energy drained from the room. Seraphine's intense focus shifted back to the battered, fragile child lying motionless on the hospital bed. The rhythmic beeping of the heart monitor was the only sound left in the sterile space. She stepped closer to the mattress. Reaching out, she grasped Cassian's small, icy-cold hands in her own warm palms.
A suffocating, crushing wave of maternal guilt washed over her. The emotional weight was heavy enough to steal her breath away. Hot tears welled up in her usually stoic eyes. She mentally pictured the agonizing five years this innocent boy had endured in her absence. He had been rendered mute by Kaelen's severe emotional neglect, and he was likely subjected to ongoing physical and psychological abuse by Giselle. She had imagined various scenarios for their eventual reunion, but none involved her precious boy lying in a hospital bed with such horrific wounds.
A dark, terrifying premonition settled heavily in the center of her chest. She had a visceral gut feeling that his fall down the hill was not merely an accident. Kaelen was clearly not a responsible father, and his negligence had left the boy vulnerable. Someone had intentionally hurt him.
Releasing the boy's frail hand, Seraphine immediately pulled out her encrypted phone. She dialed Silas without a single second of hesitation.
"Find out exactly why the child fell down the hill at the cemetery today. Pull every camera, interrogate every witness. I want to know if Giselle was responsible!" Seraphine instructed. Her voice trembled with raw, suppressed rage.
"Yes, Ms. Seraphine. I'll check on it right away," Silas replied through the receiver.
Hanging up the device, Seraphine tucked the phone away. She turned her steely gaze back to Cassian's extensive wounds. The silence of the room wrapped around her as she fiercely vowed to make Giselle pay with her life if she was to blame for the boy's miserable condition. Nobody would get away with hurting her son.
