A Spectacle of Scorn

A wave of playful, judgmental gazes locked onto Audrey’s frail frame the second she stumbled inside the dim VIP lounge. Her palms sweat with anxiety under the intense scrutiny, yet she forced her expression into a calm, deadpan mask.

"Damn! Isn't this the Vance family's disgraced daughter?" a man shouted over the thumping bass, his voice dripping with sheer disbelief. "Why isn't she rotting in jail for murder? Is it really her?"

Vicious gossip ignited across the luxurious room. The guests pointed and whispered, tearing into her ruined reputation. This reaction brought immense delight to Valerie. She nudged Audrey’s arm with cruel intent, her painted lips curving into a malicious sneer.

"What are you waiting for? Say hello to everyone. Prison didn't make you dumb, did it?" Valerie taunted.

Audrey bit her lower lip. She met Valerie’s burning stare without flinching and spoke flatly to the room. "Hi guys, I'm Audrey Vance."

From a nearby leather couch, Gideon tilted his head. He watched her stoic submission with a deep, conflicted frown marring his features.

High above the city in a spacious corporate office, Dominic sat in his sleek chair. A sinister, oppressive aura radiated from his sharp suit. He stared coldly out the massive window at the distant, colorful neon lights of Apex Club.

Carter stood rigidly before the mahogany desk. "Nadine asked if she should intervene in the escalating situation in the VIP lounge, sir."

"Gideon is present, isn't he?" Dominic asked in a low, measured tone.

"Yes, he is."

Dominic leisurely flicked his silver lighter. He brought a cigarette to his lips, and a cruel smirk curled upward.

"Since Gideon is there, we shouldn't ruin the guests' fun. Tell Nadine to stay out of it." Dominic exhaled, watching the gray smoke rise from his elegant fingers. He pictured Audrey’s humiliated, miserable state in that crowded room. It felt incredibly hard to reconcile her current docility with the fiery, defiant woman she had been two years ago.

*The night is still young,* he thought with dark anticipation.

Time dragged on in pure agony back at the oppressive club. Audrey lost count of how many glasses of hard liquor they forced her to guzzle down under the cheering of the elite crowd. An acidic fire burned a hole through her stomach, threatening to make her gag. Yet, she stubbornly refused to beg them to stop. She knew no one in this room possessed an ounce of mercy for a convicted murderer.

Valerie openly gloated. She sat upright, deeply amused by Audrey's silent, painful struggle. Valerie pushed yet another brimming glass of amber liquor across the glass table.

Gideon’s patience snapped.

Stepping forward with a thunderous frown, he snatched the glass from the table. He threw his head back and swallowed the burning liquid in one aggressive shot.

Valerie’s face darkened with instant jealousy and rage. "What are you doing, Deon? That drink was meant to torture Audrey!"

Gideon glared at Valerie in heavy silence. He then stepped toward the trembling Audrey. His large hand clamped around her thin wrist. He hauled her forcefully off the plush couch.

"Come with me," Gideon barked.

An overwhelming surge of pain shot up Audrey's injured arm as she stumbled forward, barely catching her footing. "Wait, Gideon. Where are you taking me?"

He ignored her desperate pleas. Gideon ruthlessly dragged her out of the dim lounge, pulling her through the winding corridors. The guests watched in shock as he hauled her all the way downstairs to the main lobby before finally releasing his iron grip.

Because of her permanently weakened leg, the sudden release of momentum stripped Audrey of her balance. She collapsed heavily onto the hard marble floor.

Gideon stood tall over her broken form, looking down with a piercing, disgusted gaze.

"Do you think it's fun to give up on yourself?" he demanded harshly.

Hearing his probing words, Audrey lay sprawled on the cold ground, left stunned in silence.
