The Apex of Humiliation
Following his ominous threat in the snow, Dominic shifted his icy gaze toward his assistant. He beckoned Carter over with a flick of his gloved fingers.
Carter stepped forward, his posture rigid. "Sir?"
"Get her cleaned up and take her directly to the Apex Club."
Audrey's sallow face blanched the second those words registered. Her blood ran colder than the freezing snow soaking through her clothes. The Apex Club was a notorious den of debauchery, an exclusive playground reserved for the ultra-wealthy elite. A sickening realization hit her like a physical blow. His twisted intention was to parade her downfall. He wanted to humiliate her by showcasing her current status as a despicable, impoverished criminal in the exact place where she had once reigned as a pampered VIP. Physical chills racked her battered body, making her teeth chatter.
"Is this cruel display genuinely necessary, Dominic?" she asked in a low, hateful voice, staring up at his imposing figure.
Dominic let out a harsh, sarcastic laugh. He feigned mock disbelief at her audacity.
"It has been two years since we last met, Audrey. I cannot fathom how you still have not learned your lesson. Beggars cannot be choosers. Do you not grasp that simple concept?" he sneered, his words cutting through the winter air.
Audrey bit her lip and stared down at the slush. She understood his sadistic point all too well. Prison had stripped her of everything, forcing her to abandon her pride to survive the daily torment.
Growing visibly frustrated and disgusted by her pathetic, shivering appearance, Dominic turned his back on her and strode toward his luxurious Bentley.
"Tell Nadine to take good care of this lady. Do not disappoint me," he tossed his final, chilling instruction over his shoulder before climbing into the warm interior.
The black vehicle soon disappeared into the heavy snowfall, leaving a thick cloud of exhaust in its wake. Carter stepped forward, pausing for a moment before extending a hand to help her up from the freezing ground.
Slightly touched by this microscopic display of human decency, Audrey hesitated, brushing the snow from her aching knees. She looked up at him. "Thank you. How is Chloe doing?"
Carter paused. His tone carried a sharp, ambiguous edge when he spoke.
"She was forced to give up dancing for good. What do you expect?"
Audrey stood frozen in the howling winter wind. A brittle, bitter smile broke across her numb lips as she stared into the snowy void. The brutal, inescapable truth dawned on her. As long as Chloe suffered the consequences of her lost dream, Dominic would never stop punishing her.
Over the course of the next few weeks, Dominic vanished from her life like a fading bad dream. However, Audrey remained firmly trapped in his web, forced to work as a lowly hostess in the lavish lobby of the Apex Club.
"Welcome to the Apex Club." Audrey recited the greeting for what felt like the thousandth time that night.
The moment the towering brass doors swung shut behind the latest group of wealthy patrons, she shifted her weight. She thumped her numb, throbbing left leg, trying to ease the ache from endlessly bowing to wealthy customers.
Penelope, a sympathetic coworker, watched the targeted cruelty unfold with immense pity. "Why do you not just quit? Nadine forces you to work grueling, illegal overtime and makes you clean up after those aggressively drunk patrons. Nobody deserves that kind of treatment," Penelope pressed.
Audrey offered a brittle, hollow smile and shook her head, adjusting her posture. "I am broke, Penelope. This job at least guarantees I will not starve or freeze to death on the streets. My criminal record makes finding other employment impossible."
Penelope sighed, realizing she could never understand the bleak reality Audrey lived in, and wisely chose to stay silent and return to her post.
Audrey silently swallowed her shredded pride. She endured the severe mistreatment from Nadine, knowing full well the manager was acting on Dominic's implicit orders to make her life a living hell. The wealthy patrons treated her with open disgust, throwing their coats at her and snapping their fingers, but she weathered their contempt without a single word of complaint. She was determined to survive. More importantly, she refused to bring any more ruin to the family she believed she had already dragged into hell two years ago.
Moments later, the harsh glare of headlights swept across the frosted glass doors. A loud, laughing group of wealthy elite patrons stepped out of two limited-edition luxury cars at the grand entrance. Their boisterous voices echoed over the quiet street as they made their way up the plush carpeted steps.
Masking her agonizing physical pain, Audrey forced her spine straight. She plastered on a fake, professional smile and clasped her hands in front of her cheap uniform. As the arrogant group approached the entrance, she bowed deeply, pushing through the sharp stab in her ruined knee.
"Welcome to the Apex Club. We are delighted to have you this evening," she recited the standard greeting in a smooth, practiced tone.
Most of the group strode past her, their expensive perfumes mingling with the crisp winter air. They ignored the lowly hostess altogether, treating her like an invisible piece of the opulent furniture as they headed straight for the private VIP elevators at the end of the hall.
However, the lady walking at the very back of the group suddenly stopped dead in her tracks.
The heavy silence stretched as the woman frowned deeply. She meticulously sized up the hostess standing by the door. Her sharp eyes roamed over Audrey's scarred, hollowed face, taking in the jagged marks that ruined her once-flawless complexion. She then examined the unflattering, cheap uniform that barely hid her frail, shivering frame. A spark of recognition flared in the woman's eyes.
"Audrey?" the elite woman doubtfully and sharply called out her name.
