A Reckless Ride

Intimidated by Vaughn's blatant sexual threat, Cleo abandoned the rear door handle. She slipped reluctantly into the passenger seat of the luxurious Maybach, keeping her body angled away from him. The powerful engine purred to life beneath them. She tried to stare straight ahead at the concrete wall of the parking garage, but her gaze kept drifting toward Vaughn’s hands resting casually on the leather steering wheel. His fingers were elegant and slender, the prominent veins on the back of his hands tracing a path of raw masculinity.

Then, she saw it.

A cold, undeniable glint caught the harsh fluorescent lights overhead. A heavy platinum ring rested flush against his ring finger.

A sickening wave of moral guilt washed over her chest. The horrifying thought of having sold her body to a married man churned in her stomach, making bile rise in her throat. She had compromised her dignity for a check, but being the other woman was a line she never thought she would cross.

"You are married?" Cleo blurted out the accusation before she could stop herself.

Vaughn did not spare her a single glance. He kept his eyes fixed forward and smoothly deflected the probing question. "I don’t see how my marital status has anything to do with me taking you home."

Flustered by his cold evasion and her own rising panic, Cleo fumbled clumsily with her seatbelt. This was her first time sitting in a luxury car, and her shaking hands seemed to have a mind of their own. She kept missing the buckle. Within seconds, the car's piercing warning alarm began to blare incessantly in the enclosed cabin, amplifying her anxiety.

Without a word of warning, Vaughn leaned his massive frame over the center console. He closed the distance between them in a heartbeat, trapping her against the seat. The suffocating, signature scent of white sandalwood washed over her, masking the smell of new leather.

Reacting purely on instinct, Cleo shrank back into the seat. She threw her arms up in a desperate panic, crossing them tight over her chest to shield herself from what she assumed was an impending assault. She resembled a terrified, wounded hedgehog with her spikes raised.

Vaughn paused. He reached past her trembling arms, pulled the seatbelt across her body, and clicked it securely into place. Drawing back, he offered her a flat, deeply unamused look.

"Excuse me, but I won’t take you right under the surveillance camera. I’m not that desperate." He stated the words with dripping sarcasm.

Red-faced and humiliated by her own overreaction, Cleo turned her head toward the window to hide her flush. "Doing it anywhere would be better than doing it on a freezing operating room table," she muttered bitterly under her breath.

The tense atmosphere shattered the moment they exited the garage and Cleo realized the scenery outside the window was wrong. Vaughn had bypassed the familiar route to her rundown apartment and merged onto a foreign stretch of road.

Raw, unadulterated terror seized her chest. She knocked frantically on the glass and spun toward him. "Where are you taking me? This isn’t the way back home. Stop the car right now! If you don't, I swear I'll throw myself out this door!"

His sculptured face darkened with deep, furious impatience at her dramatics. He was tired of her constant panic.

With a sharp click, Vaughn deliberately unlocked all the car doors. He slammed his expensive leather shoe onto the accelerator. The glowing speedometer needle surged forward, hitting a terrifying one hundred and twenty. The engine roared like a caged beast, pushing Cleo deep into the leather upholstery.

"Go ahead, I won’t stop you! Should I drive faster so that you’ll roll further after jumping out?" he roared over the engine noise, his voice laced with pure menace.

As the city lights blurred into meaningless streaks outside the window, Cleo chickened out. Her knuckles turned bone-white as she gripped the overhead handle for dear life. She squeezed her eyes shut, pressing her back flush against the seat. If she jumped now, she would either die on impact or be crippled forever.

Seeing her cower in submission, Vaughn eased the speed slightly. A dark, sarcastic undertone edged his voice. "Do not ever use such a pathetic, childish method to threaten me again. It simply will not work on a man like me."

Cleo kept her eyes squeezed shut, her heart hammering a frantic rhythm against her ribs as the Maybach cruised down the dark highway.

Eventually, the heavy vehicle pulled off the main road and glided into a brightly lit gas station. Vaughn unbuckled his seatbelt, stepped out of the car, and headed toward the convenience store to buy water.

Desperately seeking fresh air to calm her hyperventilating lungs, Cleo shakily unbuckled her seatbelt and stepped out of the car. She needed a moment alone to strategize her escape and figure out a way to pry some real answers out of him. She paced the concrete, her mind racing.

Her moment of reprieve was destroyed in a split second.

Two rowdy young boys sprinted through the station, chasing each other blindly past the fuel pumps. They crashed directly into her side. A massive bucket of thick, black industrial paint tipped out of their hands, splashing heavily over her cheap clothes.

Before Cleo could even gasp in shock, the boys realized they were in trouble and fled into the night without offering a single apology.

She stood frozen beside the Maybach, dripping with wet, toxic-smelling black paint. The freezing night air bit through her ruined, sticky clothes. She was miserable. Looking at the ultra-luxury leather car seats through the open door, a harsh reality hit her. She knew she could never in her lifetime afford to replace those pristine seats if she stained the interior. She stubbornly planted her feet on the concrete, wrapping her arms around herself.

Vaughn walked out of the convenience store. His eyes narrowed into dangerous slits as they raked over her ruined, dripping form.

"I will just wait in the cold and take a cheap cab back. I do not have the money to compensate you for getting paint all over your seats." Cleo insisted, her teeth chattering slightly.

"Just look at the miserable state you are in. Tell me now, which cab driver would take you?" Vaughn retorted harshly.

Without waiting for her protest, he reached out. His large hand snatched her fragile wrist, and he forcefully shoved her right back into the pristine passenger seat.

The heavy door slammed shut, trapping her inside. As Vaughn got behind the wheel and drove them back out into the dreary, drizzling night, the suffocating, toxic smell of industrial paint filled the enclosed cabin. The foul odor overpowered the lingering scent of his cologne.

Cleo quickly rolled down her window to let the stench out, shivering as the damp mist hit her face. Vaughn lowered his window as well, resting his arm casually on the wet door frame while steering with one hand.

The agonizingly tense silence was broken by Vaughn’s phone ringing. He answered it, slipping effortlessly into a lengthy, authoritative conversation in a rapid, fluent foreign language. The unknown syllables flowed from his lips with an intimidating cadence, further highlighting the insurmountable gap between their worlds. Cleo sat quietly in the passenger seat, unable to decipher a single word he was saying, feeling smaller by the second.

By the time the Maybach finally glided to a halt outside her shabby, rundown neighborhood, the call conveniently ended.

The engine cut off. They were sitting alone in the dark, parked car. Cleo’s anxiety spiked to dangerous levels. The isolated, dark environment felt heavy and suggestive, pressing down on her lungs. She remembered what had happened the last time they were alone in the dark. Terrified that the stillness might suddenly prompt him to turn into a beast and have his way with her right here in the passenger seat, she clutched her stained bag to her chest like a shield. She needed to escape this predator before he decided to touch her again.

"I will get going now, Mr. Lockwood! Goodbye!" she stammered out a hasty, panicked farewell.

She reached for the door handle, desperate to flee the car.

His charming, baritone voice cut through the dark, wrapping around her like velvet chains.

"Ahem... Ms. Stanton, aren’t you going to invite me in for a cup of tea?"
