Done Playing Nice

Miriam’s shrill voice tore through the quiet living room. “Valerie, you are not Donovan's wife anymore! Get out!”

To the older woman, the signed divorce papers were final. The marriage was over. She saw no valid reason for this shameless girl to continue lingering inside her son's home. She stood with her chest heaving, glaring at the young woman sitting before the canvas.

Roxanne stepped forward, slipping effortlessly into the role of a sweet peacemaker. She placed a gentle hand on the matriarch's trembling arm. “Mrs. Whitmore, please do not get so mad at an outsider. It is bad for your health.”

Her soft tone masked a sharp calculation. By framing Valerie as an outsider, Roxanne used her innocent guise to solidify her own rightful place by Donovan's side.

The household staff stood frozen near the archway. Miriam shot them a venomous glare, expecting them to drag the unwanted guest out the front door. However, the hesitant maids nervously refused to lay a hand on the woman of the house.

Valerie stood amidst the suffocating tension, unfazed. She crossed her arms casually over her chest, her dark gaze steady and calm. She watched the chaotic scene unfold without a single twitch of fear.

Seeing the maids cower in silence, Miriam took matters into her own hands. She abandoned her usual matriarchal grace in a blinding flash of temper. She lunged forward, her hands slamming hard into the large bucket of paints sitting on the wooden supply cart.

The heavy container tipped over the edge. A dark, pungent mixture of muddy colors flew through the air. The dirty sludge splashed heavily over Valerie’s chest, ruining her pristine white dress and staining her pale skin.

In the abusive past, a cowardly Valerie would have lowered her head. She would have retreated upstairs in humiliated silence to quietly change her clothes. She would have swallowed the pain to keep the peace.

Not anymore.

Without a second of hesitation, Valerie bent down. She gripped the heavy bucket of dirty, leftover paint-water sitting beside the easel. With a fierce swing of her arms, she hurled the filthy liquid straight forward.

A massive splash echoed across the high ceilings. The pungent, dirty water drenched both Miriam and Roxanne from head to toe.

Roxanne’s perfect salon blowout now clung to her face in wet, muddy clumps. Her designer dress dripped with gray sludge. Her eyes flashed with a hidden, murderous fury. She gritted her teeth, desperate to tear the other woman apart, but forced herself to stay still.

Beside her, Miriam wiped the foul-smelling water from her eyes. She gasped in pure disbelief, her face dripping with the dark liquid. “Valerie Vance! You have no respect for your elders!”

Valerie held her ground. Her dark gaze remained razor-sharp and cold. “It is not like you ever cared for me. Why should I respect someone who does not even have a shred of love for me?”

For three grueling years, Valerie had endured being treated worse than a lowly maid. She had learned a hard lesson. Her continued silence would only embolden her relentless abusers. She refused to play the victim ever again.

Miriam choked on a breath, furious at the sheer audacity of the retort. She pointed a trembling finger at the younger woman. “How dare you talk back to me? I am going to kill you!”

Her blood pressure spiked. Her vision blurred, and she stumbled backward, losing her balance before she could even attempt to strike a physical blow.

Roxanne rushed forward, catching the older woman by the shoulders to keep her from hitting the floor. She maliciously weaponized the dramatic moment, her voice ringing out loud and accusatory. “Valerie, what is it that you truly want? Do you want to kill Miriam?”

Valerie merely scoffed at the pathetic, melodramatic performance unfolding before her. “There are no cameras here, Roxanne. Just cut out the fake act.”

Roxanne's chest heaved. Before she could escalate her theatrical performance, a heavy sound rumbled from the driveway outside.

The deep growl of a powerful car engine signaled Donovan's unexpected return. The rhythm of leather shoes clicking against the marble hallway echoed through the tense air. The three women turned their heads as the footsteps drew closer.

Donovan’s tall, imposing figure stepped firmly inside the living room. He stopped dead in his tracks. His thick brows furrowed in intense displeasure as his sharp eyes quickly swept over the ruined floor. He took in the wretched, filthy state of the three thoroughly drenched women standing in his home.

“What exactly is going on here?” he demanded, his deep voice carrying a dangerous edge.

Emboldened by her powerful son's presence, Miriam pulled herself upright. She pointed a shaky, accusatory finger directly at Valerie, deciding to twist the narrative on the spot.

“Donovan, she is impossible! She hit me! There will be no peace in this family as long as she stays here!”
