A Savage Shutdown
Shrinking under the oppressive weight of Declan’s furious stare, Daphne hastily softened her posture. She shrank her shoulders, adopting that perfectly manufactured fragility she always weaponized around wealthy men.
"This is genuinely just a huge misunderstanding," Daphne pleaded in a quiet, trembling pitch. "Maeve, if you really want that bedding collection, please just take it. I can hold off on buying it."
A low, hollow laugh slipped past Viviana’s lips. It was almost impressive how seamlessly the woman could breathe life into the very definition of a textbook manipulator.
"Who exactly gave you the delusion that you are in a position to offer me anything?" Viviana met the tearful gaze with absolute, freezing detachment. "Since when do I require your permission to take what I want?"
The fabricated color vanished from Daphne’s cheeks, leaving a sickly, chalky pallor in its wake. She clamped her back teeth together, visibly struggling to maintain her helpless facade under such a public, unapologetic verbal lashing.
"Maeve, watch your mouth!" Silas barked, stepping forward to shield his fiancée.
Before Silas could fully shift his weight, Declan smoothly positioned his broad frame directly in Viviana's path. The physical distance between the two men vanished. The ambient noise of the luxury boutique seemed to completely drop out, replaced by the heavy, volatile friction radiating between them.
"Silas, don't," Daphne urged, her fingers anxiously gripping the sleeve of his tailored jacket to pull him back. "I owe Maeve this much. It's perfectly fine if she needs to vent her anger on me. Please don't start a fight over my feelings."
Her carefully constructed martyrdom was reaching award-winning levels.
Viviana did not spare the weeping woman another ounce of attention. She simply turned her head and raised a single hand toward the hovering, sweat-drenched store manager.
"Take a good look at both of their faces," Viviana commanded, her voice slicing through the high-end retail space without a shred of hesitation. "Print out a photograph and mount a sign directly on the front glass of this establishment."
The manager froze, staring at her in utter bewilderment.
"The sign will clearly state: Dogs and these two specific individuals are permanently barred from entry," Viviana finished smoothly.
A loud, completely uninhibited burst of laughter echoed off the marble floors. Declan threw his head back, thoroughly entertained by the sheer brutality of her order. She was earning every bit of that royal title today.
The manager awkwardly shifted his weight, looking frantically toward Declan for guidance on how to handle the wealthy patrons.
"Effective immediately, Miss Thorne's instructions are my direct orders," Declan stated, the humor vanishing from his expression in a split second. "Execute her request exactly as she said."
"Understood, Boss!" The manager practically tripped over his own feet to acknowledge the command, rapidly connecting the dots.
Declan was the actual financier behind the luxury brand. He preferred to operate entirely from the shadows, but the moment someone tried to corner Viviana, that anonymity went straight out the window.
A sharp, ugly spike of realization flashed in Daphne’s vision. The playboy standing before them actually owned the boutique. She forced the malice down before it could fully register on her features, instantly replacing it with fresh, shimmering tears.
"Maeve, I have swallowed my pride and accommodated you at every turn because I know you endured hardships because of my past choices," Daphne cried, her voice cracking perfectly. "But why do you have to push things to such a cruel extreme?"
Watching Daphne crumble, the rigid lines of Silas's face hardened into absolute fury.
"Maeve, that is enough. Do not cross the line," Silas warned, his voice dropping into a menacing register. Nobody had ever dared to subject him to this level of public humiliation.
"I can cross lines you haven't even imagined yet. Would you care for a demonstration?" Viviana challenged, refusing to yield a single inch of ground.
Silas dropped his arms to his sides. His fingers curled inward, the knuckles pulling tight until they were stark white.
"What's the holdup? You looking to throw hands? Let's get to it." Declan eagerly grabbed his cuffs and began rolling the expensive fabric up his forearms.
Silas ground his back teeth together. His fists tightened, then slowly relaxed, only to clench again.
Eventually, the rigid discipline drilled into him since childhood won out. His social conditioning simply would not permit him to engage in a physical street brawl inside a luxury bedding store.
Viviana casually tossed the crumpled, alcohol-soaked medical wipe into a sleek silver trash receptacle near the counter.
"Let's get out of here," Viviana instructed her companion, her tone devoid of any lingering adrenaline. "This place is too suffocating for a decent fight."
A dull, rhythmic throbbing was beginning to hammer against her temples. All she wanted was to close her eyes.
Noticing the subtle shift in her posture, Declan recognized the onset of her chronic migraines. He instantly dropped his aggressive stance, completely ignoring the other couple as he turned to guide Viviana toward the exit.
Silas remained anchored to the marble floor. His gaze stayed fixed on Viviana's retreating figure, tracking her every movement until she completely disappeared through the grand glass doors.
Daphne tracked his lingering attention. A cold knot of insecurity tightened in her chest, and she dug her manicured fingers slightly harder into his arm.
"It all makes sense now," Daphne murmured, injecting just the right amount of sorrow into her tone. "No wonder she refused your compensation and left so decisively back then. She already had a powerful replacement waiting in the wings."
The calculated words hit their exact mark. The ambient tension in Silas's frame morphed into something dark and ugly.
"I never thought she was capable of sinking to such depravity," Silas muttered, staring at the empty doorway with unhidden disgust.
"Maeve is a beautiful girl, and this city is full of wealthy temptations. She probably just couldn't maintain her moral high ground when the money was offered," Daphne whispered, layering her poison thickly. "Given how arrogant she was acting, Mr. Adler must be spending a fortune on her."
Daphne had seen the flash of genuine awe in Silas’s eyes when Viviana first walked out. She knew exactly how striking the woman was, which was exactly why she had orchestrated Maeve's removal three years ago.
She had assumed the problem was permanently buried. Seeing her not only thriving but flanked by Declan Adler proved she had severely miscalculated the threat.
"She thinks she can maintain that high-ground act forever?" Silas let out a harsh, degrading scoff. "Declan is a notorious degenerate with a rotating door of women. Does she really believe a guy like that is going to treat her like a princess long-term?"
"That is the path she chose for herself. You did absolutely everything in your power to help her," Daphne reassured him gently.
Silas fell silent, letting the bitterness simmer. When she first vanished, he had actually utilized his resources to track her down. She had disappeared without a single trace, leading him to feel a brief, lingering guilt over a potential accident.
Now, he realized she had simply adopted a fake name and thrown herself at a billionaire playboy.
When Declan inevitably tosses her aside, she had better not come crawling back to my door in tears, Silas thought viciously.
Inside the heavily tinted cabin of the luxury vehicle, Viviana pressed the back of her head against the leather seat and kept her eyes tightly shut.
From the driver's seat, Declan repeatedly shot heavy, calculated glances in her direction. His grip on the steering wheel shifted restlessly.
"Don't bother asking. I am handling it on my own terms," Viviana stated, her voice muffled but carrying an immovable weight.
"Are you entirely sure about that? You don't want me to intervene?" Declan pushed, his protective instincts flaring.
He was highly observant. He had grown up alongside Viviana and was intimately familiar with every single person in her social orbit. Those two strangers were completely unknown to him, which meant they were relics from the three brutal years she had gone missing.
Given the hostile, degrading way that man had spoken to her, Viviana had clearly suffered under them. Declan was more than ready to dismantle their lives.
"I said you are not to involve yourself in this," Viviana reiterated, opening her eyes just enough to glare at him. "This is my mess, and I am the one who will tear it down."
Declan registered the absolute finality in her tone. He knew better than to push her when she drew a hard line in the sand.
"Fine. We do it your way," Declan conceded with a reluctant sigh. "But the second you need something crushed, you point the finger and tell me."
"Noted," Viviana breathed out, letting her eyes fall shut again.
Understanding the severity of her exhaustion, Declan kept the cabin completely silent for the remainder of the drive.
Roughly thirty minutes later, the tires crunched over the pristine driveway of an ultra-private, mid-level luxury estate nestled in the hills.
"I know you need absolute isolation right now, so I secured this property just for you," Declan explained as he killed the engine. "The scenery is excellent, and it keeps you in close proximity to my current residence."
He guided her through the heavy front doors into the immaculate foyer.
"I already had a private crew sanitize the entire interior from top to bottom. Once the boutique delivery team drops off the bedding, you can finally crash," Declan promised.
"Alright," Viviana murmured, leaning heavily against the marble counter.
The logistics team from the store was incredibly efficient. Before Declan even had a chance to pour a glass of water, the delivery trucks arrived and hauled the heavy packages upstairs.
Fully aware of Viviana's severe mysophobia, Declan personally tore open the luxury packaging and meticulously fitted the new sheets over the massive mattress himself.
"How did I do, Your Highness?" Declan leaned against the doorframe, visibly fishing for a compliment.
Viviana cast a brief, thoroughly unimpressed glance over the perfectly smoothed fabric. "It is tolerable."
"Just tolerable? After all that manual labor?" Declan protested loudly.
"Dismissed. I need a shower and I need to sleep," Viviana ordered, completely ignoring his performance as she walked past him toward the en-suite bathroom.
She was operating on zero fumes. Her body was desperate to shut down. Yet, her deeply ingrained neat-freak tendencies made it physically impossible for her to crawl into a clean bed covered in the grime of the city.
"Message received, moving out!" Declan called back with exaggerated obedience, swiftly retreating down the hallway and pulling the front door shut behind him.
Viviana forced her heavy limbs through the motions of a scalding hot shower, scrubbing the residual exhaustion from her skin.
ly clean, she wrapped herself in a towel, dragged her feet into the dark bedroom, and collapsed onto the expansive, cloud-like mattress.
Her consciousness surrendered instantly, dragging her down into a heavy, dreamless void.
Sometime later, wrapped in the hazy fog of sleep, a strange sensation pulled at the edges of Viviana's awareness. There was a dense, radiating heat pressed firmly against her side.
It felt exactly like a human body.
