The Elusive Siren
Exactly twelve months later, the dull roar of turbine engines settled over a heavily restricted private tarmac at Alden International.
The heavy cabin door of a luxury jet swung open, revealing a man who instantly commanded the sterile space.
Cassian Kensington descended the metal stairs with chilling authority. His tailored suit clung to a rigid frame, and his dark eyes swept over the tarmac with an icy indifference.
"Mr. Kensington," Gareth Hayes said, rushing toward the bottom of the steps.
"Yeah." A single, sharp syllable slipped past Cassian's tight lips.
Gareth swallowed hard, gesturing toward the sleek vehicle waiting mere feet away. "Everything is secured. We bypass the main terminals completely. The car will take us through the restricted service tunnel."
Cassian ducked his head, sliding into the spacious leather interior. It was unprecedented for a civilian vehicle to pull directly onto Alden's airstrip, but his covert arrival demanded total isolation.
Gareth scrambled into the passenger side, pulling the door shut just as the engine roared to life.
"Did you locate her?" Cassian asked. His voice was quiet, yet the sheer pressure in the cabin spiked.
Gareth hunched his shoulders, keeping his eyes firmly glued to his tablet. "No. We haven't."
"You haven't." Cassian leaned back, his long fingers beginning a slow, methodical tap against the leather armrest.
Gareth broke out in a cold sweat at the rhythmic thud.
"It's my fault," Gareth rushed to explain, his voice trembling slightly. "We utilized every resource based on your sketch, but there isn't a single match anywhere."
Gareth genuinely wondered if this mystery woman was just a figment of his boss's imagination.
Cassian stopped tapping. His jaw tightened as the visceral memory of that night from exactly one year ago slammed into his chest.
He could still feel the slick friction of her bare skin gliding against his, the raw heat of her naked body locked perfectly beneath him. Her breathy, broken moans still echoed in his ears, dragging him back to the intense physical sensation of burying himself inside her.
If he hadn't woken up to the undeniable, wet stains of their frantic lovemaking soaked into the hotel mattress, he would have written the entire intoxicating encounter off as a vivid wet dream.
"Keep searching," Cassian ordered, letting his eyes fall shut.
He rubbed his thumb across his index finger, chasing the phantom warmth of her curves, while his assistant sat frozen in the front seat, quietly convinced his employer needed psychiatric evaluation over a single hookup.
Outside the tinted windows, the airport's public address system crackled to life, announcing a total lockdown of all terminals for the next thirty minutes.
Gareth frowned at the passing terminal buildings. "What's going on out there?"
"Drive," Cassian said, completely indifferent to the civilian chaos. "Just get us out of here."
While the Kensington vehicle smoothly bypassed the frenzy, the atmosphere inside the airport's VIP lounge was rapidly deteriorating.
Daphne Mercer shifted on the plush sofa, a delicate frown pulling at her perfectly contoured features. She reached out, gently wrapping her manicured fingers around the arm of the man beside her.
"Silas, why on earth would they freeze the entire airport?" she asked, her tone meticulously manufactured to sound like a soft breeze.
Silas Vance patted her hand, projecting total confidence. He shot a sharp look at his secretary standing by the door. "Go figure it out."
Tobias Reed slipped out of the lounge, returning a few short minutes later with a tight expression.
"Security claims a highly sensitive VIP is landing," Tobias reported. "They've mandated a thirty-minute lockdown just to clear a path."
Daphne kept her sweet smile fixed in place, though deep annoyance flared behind her eyes. This delay was completely ruining her schedule to fix her makeup for the paparazzi waiting outside.
"They halted thousands of travelers for one person?" Daphne tilted her head. "Who could demand that kind of treatment?"
"The operations manager refused to disclose a name," Tobias added.
Daphne leaned closer to Silas. "Is this guest truly important enough to force the Vance family to step aside?"
Silas's expression hardened. "Find the VIP manager. Tell them to clear an emergency exit for us immediately."
"Right away, sir," Tobias said.
Shortly after, the sweating lounge manager practically sprinted into the room, bowing deeply as he swiped his access card on a restricted side door.
"Mr. Vance, Mrs. Vance, I am incredibly sorry for the delay," the manager stammered.
Daphne glided forward, moving with the entitled grace of a pampered cat. She paused right beside the trembling man.
"I'm curious," Daphne murmured, keeping her chin angled high. "Who exactly are you hosting today?"
"I swear, I don't know," the manager pleaded. "The top executives arranged everything directly."
"Is that right?" Daphne's voice was honey-sweet, yet laced with biting condescension. "The executives are out fetching their guest, and they left you to deal with us?"
The manager went pale, terrified of offending the Vance family. "It's a highly irregular situation, ma'am."
Daphne's vanity soared at the sight of his sheer panic. She adjusted her designer handbag, playing the forgiving aristocrat perfectly.
"Forget it," Daphne sighed softly. "As long as we aren't kept waiting, we aren't that fussy."
"Thank you for your understanding," the manager gasped, bowing repeatedly.
"Hmm," Daphne hummed dismissively as she stepped out into the concourse.
The moment Silas and Daphne exited, a massive wave of movement forced them to a dead halt.
A synchronized phalanx of a dozen bodyguards in sharp black suits marched down the terminal, forcefully clearing a wide perimeter.
In the absolute center walked a single, slender figure.
She wore a custom-tailored outfit that hugged every curve of her delicate frame, drawing immediate attention to her incredibly long, straight legs. Her dark, curled hair cascaded freely over her chest.
A pair of oversized designer sunglasses obscured her face, but her sharp jawline and striking red lips radiated a dominating, flawless beauty.
The sheer authority of her entourage left Silas and Daphne frozen, forced to stare at the mysterious woman's retreating back.
Daphne's carefully crafted mask slipped, genuine shock twisting her features.
"It's actually a woman?" she muttered.
