A Glimpse of Desire

"The gentle breeze brings a sweet fragrance. My darling Val smells so good."

The man was burying his nose in Valerie's neck, taking a soft sniff.

Everyone called her Valerie, except for him, who called her Val.

He said, "Valerie is everyone's Valerie, but Val is only mine."

At the end of his sentence, the man forcefully pushed down his hip as if he intended to pin Valerie to the bed.

The raw heat of his body radiated against her skin. A searing fire burned deep inside her core, making her forehead slick with sweat. The primal friction of his unyielding waist driving into her sent waves of electric heat through her nerves. The firm grip of his large hands bruised her hips, claiming her with fierce possession. She struggled to open her eyes. She desperately wanted to see the face of the dominant figure hovering over her. A thick mist clouded her vision. No matter how hard she strained her sight against the darkness, the man's features remained an obscure shadow. She could only go up and down, her body surrendering to the relentless rhythm, helplessly following the man's intimate actions. The heavy scent of his cologne mingled with the sweat of their tangled limbs.

Valerie woke up with a sharp gasp. The digital clock on the nightstand flashed nine in the morning.

She sat up and massaged her damp temples. The visceral fantasy lingered in her mind, leaving her flushed and bewildered. Her heart pounded against her ribs. She threw off the silk blankets and stood on the cold hardwood floor.

"Could it possibly be the hormone's fault? I have no special feelings toward any men. Since I can't figure it out, I will just put it aside for now."

She muttered the words to herself, forcing her racing pulse to steady. Today demanded her undivided attention. The welcome dinner party hosted by the Kensington family was scheduled for tonight. Although the lavish event started in the evening, the preparations required a grueling daytime schedule.

A sharp knock echoed through the room. Hannah Gibson pushed the door open without waiting for a response. Eleanor had personally appointed Hannah to manage Valerie’s life.

Hannah scrolled through a digital tablet. "Ms. Kensington, the appointment is scheduled at ten o'clock, and time is running short."

Valerie recognized the underlying impatience in the assistant's tone. Hannah had previously worked at the Kensington Group headquarters. Eleanor transferred her to the mansion due to her ruthless efficiency. Now, that efficiency was weaponized to herd Valerie through an exhausting maze of elite gown fittings, makeup trials, and specialized skincare sessions. The stylists would spend hours applying chemical peels, layering foundations, and pinning her hair into rigid structures.

"Just call me by my name." Valerie stated. She walked past the assistant and headed for the dining room to grab a quick, solitary breakfast.

"Alright, Valerie. We are short on time. I need to drive faster today. Please make sure you are seated securely."

Thirty minutes later, Valerie sat in the spacious back seat of the family’s luxury sedan. She leaned back against the plush leather and watched the towering skyscrapers of Oakhaven blur past the tinted glass.

Hannah gripped the steering wheel. Instead of taking the clear expressway, she veered off the main road. The car plunged into a narrow, congested commercial district. Worn-out brick buildings loomed on both sides, blocking out the morning sun. Delivery trucks idled by the curbs, unloading heavy crates. Street vendors pushed their carts into the single lane, leaving no room to maneuver.

Hannah tapped the brakes repeatedly. She stared at the gridlock ahead and let out a loud, exaggerated sigh.

"Oh no, this is bad." Hannah gripped the dashboard. She twisted her neck to look around the trapped vehicle. She knew there was no sign indicating a turnaround spot.

Valerie observed the chaotic street through the window. She recognized the intersection of Beacon Street. The trap was obvious, yet Valerie remained unfazed.

"Aren't we going to Beacon Street? We can't go through here." Valerie pointed a slender finger at the faded green sign planted by the roadside. "No need to turn around. Turn left at the second intersection ahead, go straight for three hundred yards, turn right, and you will reach Marlow Street. It leads directly to the beauty salon."

Hannah blinked in shock. She followed the precise directions out of reflex. She turned the wheel left, drove the exact distance, and took the right turn. The luxury car seamlessly merged onto the wide, open lanes of Marlow Street.

Hannah exhaled a shaky breath. She glanced at the rearview mirror, her eyes wide with disbelief.

"Valerie, you know this area well? Do you come here often?"

"No." Valerie shook her head slowly. "I haven't been here before."

"How come you are so familiar with this route?" Hannah demanded. She hadn't seen Valerie open a navigation app on her phone. Yet the country girl navigated the concrete maze as if she had driven it a thousand times.

"I looked at the map and knew which roads were passable before we left." Valerie replied with a calm, even tone.

Hannah pressed her lips together, utterly dumbfounded. She frequently visited this specific elite salon and never knew about the Marlow Street detour. Did Valerie memorize the sprawling city grid with a single glance? The sheer genius of it chilled Hannah to the bone. She could not determine if the girl was lying or if she truly possessed a photographic memory. Maps of Oakhaven were notorious for their complex forks and blind alleys.

The brutal schedule consumed the entire day. Valerie moved from the salon to the fitting rooms, skipping a proper lunch just to stay on track. By early evening, the preparations were finally complete.

Hannah drove the luxury car toward the Kensington estate. The golden hour faded into dusk. Rush hour traffic choked the multi-lane avenues. The vehicle slowed to an agonizing crawl, creeping forward inches at a time. It took over half an hour just to cover a single mile. Time rapidly slipped away, pushing them dangerously close to the banquet's starting hour.

Valerie sat in the back, supporting her chin with one hand. She stared out the window at the sea of glowing red brake lights. She was now draped in a restrictive, ice-blue custom formal gown. The expensive fabric pooled around her legs. A pair of towering three-inch heels encased her feet.

Hannah wiped a thick layer of nervous sweat from her forehead. She pointed a trembling finger toward a concrete staircase leading underground.

"Valerie, we are running out of time. This road is too congested. Why don't you take the subway instead?"

Valerie twitched her lips. A cold surge of amusement bubbled in her chest. She looked down at her elaborate attire.

"With this?"

She pointed to the long, delicate train of the ice-blue dress and the staggering heels. The outfit was a pristine masterpiece designed for marble floors, not the grime and crush of a public train station.

Hannah flushed a deep shade of crimson. Her fingers dug into the leather steering wheel.

"Then I will take a shortcut to get you back as quickly as possible."

Hannah slammed her high heel onto the accelerator pedal.

The luxury car lurched forward with a sudden roar. The front bumper smashed into the trunk of a white sedan parked in the stop-and-go traffic. Metal crunched loudly. Shattered plastic from the headlights scattered across the asphalt. The heavy impact threw them against their seatbelts. The angry driver of the white sedan immediately laid on his horn, creating a deafening blare that echoed down the block.

"Oh no!" Hannah squeezed her eyes shut. She unbuckled her harness and twisted around to face the back seat. Her voice pitched into a frantic, desperate register. "Valerie, take the subway back. I will handle this here. I have to wait for the insurance company's representative to arrive and determine the responsibility with the traffic police."

Valerie remained still. She carefully examined the sweating assistant. The calculated tension in the car was palpable.

"Are you staying?" Valerie asked.

Hannah nodded with frantic energy.

"I shouldn't have taken this route. I forgot today is Friday." Hannah stammered out the unnecessary excuse.

Valerie lifted her gaze. Her sharp, calculating eyes pierced straight through the clumsy act. She knew this was a deliberate plot to ruin her grand entrance at the Kensington mansion. Eleanor or Chloe must have given the order.

"Are there any spare clothes?" Valerie asked smoothly.

She knew the rules of high society. Attendees always brought a backup outfit in case a drink spilled or a zipper snapped. Taking a custom gown into a packed subway car would wrinkle the fabric into dried-up vegetable leaves. It would render the dress unwearable.

Hannah froze, caught off guard by the unexpected foresight. She assumed this was Valerie's first fancy party.

"Your clothes were all customized in Valmont, and this is the only one prepared for you." Hannah explained with a weak, defensive tone.

Valerie almost giggled. The sabotage attempt was glaringly obvious. She stared into Hannah's panicked face with dark, meaningful eyes.

"You are certainly a qualified assistant."

Valerie grabbed her clutch. She pushed open the heavy car door and stepped out onto the asphalt. She left the gridlocked street and the ruined vehicle behind without a second glance.

A short distance behind them in the same sea of stalled vehicles, Victor Sinclair sat in the spacious back cabin of a modified luxury SUV. He held a thick stack of corporate documents in his hands. His sharp eyes scanned the dense financial data, deeply engrossed in a pending acquisition.

Beside him, little Lucas sat in a premium child seat. The four-year-old boy wore a tiny tailored suit. He swung his small legs impatiently, kicking the air in front of him.

"Mr. Ward, play a song." Lucas directed his loud, authoritative command at the driver.

The sudden noise broke Victor's concentration. He lowered the paperwork slightly and cast a cold, annoyed glance at the boy.

"I am working." Victor stated firmly.

Lucas narrowed his long, beautiful eyes. He turned his head and glared at his father. His small voice trembled with a mixture of assertive defiance and deep sorrow.

"If you can work, why can't I listen to music?"

Lucas clamped his teeth down on his lower lip. He fought desperately to hold back the heavy tears welling in his eyes. The sheer, overwhelming loneliness crushed his tiny chest. He had looked forward to a rare, fun day out with his elusive father. Instead, Victor spent the entire afternoon reviewing contracts. The four-year-old already understood the sting of solitude. At kindergarten, the other children laughed and played on the swings, flanked by a loving mother and father. They walked out of the school gates holding hands. Lucas always sat alone on the wooden bench, waiting for Mr. Ward to drive him back to an empty mansion. He only had a father who pawned him off on the silent driver at every opportunity.

Victor heard the boy's suppressed sniffle. He let out a heavy sigh and tossed the documents onto the empty seat. He reached up and rubbed his throbbing temples. The guilt gnawed at the edges of his icy demeanor. Seeking a moment of respite from the stifling atmosphere, Victor turned his head and cast an absentminded glance out the tinted window.

Pedestrians navigated the narrow spaces between the stopped cars.

Suddenly, amidst the chaotic crowd of frustrated commuters, a singular silhouette caught his eye. The woman moved with an elegant, purposeful stride despite the towering heels and the flowing ice-blue gown.

The sight of her side profile struck him like a bolt of lightning.

"Val..." Victor muttered breathlessly.

His stoic mask shattered into a million pieces. A sudden, explosive surge of emotion flooded his chest. He leaned forward and gripped the leather headrest.

"Stop!" Victor barked the frantic order at the driver.
