Stepping Into Power

The sharp click of Sloane’s heels echoed through the gleaming corridors of the Kensington Group. She had spent the morning meticulously inspecting the various departments of the luxury conglomerate. The company had once dominated Oakhaven, its influence in the jewelry and mining sectors rivaling only the mighty Vance Group in Blackridge. That immense power was hers to wield now. Kaelen and the messy remnants of her past were dead weight she had cut loose, and she focused solely on her soaring career.

As she strode past the open-plan workspaces, keyboards clattered with forced diligence, but wide eyes tracked her every move. She wore a sleek, navy blue suit-style jumpsuit that hugged her graceful figure, projecting an aura of mature, untouchable authority.

A mesmerized employee ducked behind a monitor, discreetly snapping a photo of Sloane’s retreating back. Within minutes, the image hit the internet. The employee, boasting over two hundred thousand followers, added a caption emphasizing that even her back made them want to bow to her. The post caught fire instantly. Notifications flooded in as netizens marveled at the mysterious corporate queen, praising her elegance and clamoring to send in job applications just to catch a glimpse of her in person.

Oblivious to the viral storm brewing online, Sloane pushed open the heavy oak door to her office. The moment the latch clicked shut, her professional veneer fractured. She hobbled toward the plush leather couch and collapsed into the cushions, letting out a sharp breath. She reached down to inspect her aching, blistered feet, the physical toll of her relentless morning tour.

Declan Mercer slipped into the office right behind her, firmly closing the door. He took one look at her grimace and let out a soft laugh.

"You walked plenty today. Your feet must be screaming."

"Everything is in chaos out there. I just have to press on." Sloane leaned her head back against the upholstery with a heavy sigh.

Declan walked over to a bespoke wooden cabinet and retrieved a compact medical kit. He approached the couch, dropping to one knee on the thick Persian carpet. "No need to act tough in front of me. Let me help you."

Before she could protest, his large hands gently grasped her ankle. He slipped off her stilettos and set them aside. Opening the kit, he meticulously applied an antiseptic swab and small bandages to the angry red blisters forming on her heels and toes.

Sloane watched him in mild shock. It had been years since anyone had offered her such unguarded, gentle care. A genuine smile touched her lips.

"You are very good at this. Thank you. You must have courted many girls to be so gentle."

Declan smiled, offering no verbal reply. He leaned down slightly and blew a cool breath over the freshly bandaged blisters.

The sudden sensation sent a jolt up Sloane’s leg, making her plump toes curl instinctively. She frowned, swiftly pulling her feet back from his grasp and tucking them beneath her.

"That tickles. Let them dry themselves."

Declan chuckled softly, rising to his feet and fetching a pair of comfortable flats from her closet. He set them neatly by the couch. "It is just great that you are back."

Sloane shifted her posture, crossing her legs on the cushion and purposefully avoiding his lingering, affectionate gaze. It was time to steer the conversation back to safe waters.

"It is not exactly great that I have a mountain of mess to clean up left by my dear uncle."

"You can do it." Declan stood tall, his expression shifting to one of unwavering determination. He looked ready to bulldoze through any corporate obstacle for her.

Sloane dropped the playful banter. Her tone turned razor-sharp and authoritative.

"There are two major directives we need to execute immediately."

"I am listening," Declan replied, pulling out a sleek tablet to take notes.

"Firstly, Gideon's land in the northern suburbs will not be developed into a golf course. I have hidden plans for that specific plot, and development stops today."

"Understood," Declan nodded, tapping on the screen.

"Secondly, we are initiating an aggressive online campaign for the launch of the new 'Rose' jewelry series. Tell the operations department to launch a public forum collecting real love stories. The stories with the highest engagement will serve as the core design concepts for the new line, and the winners will receive a free Kensington diamond ring. Also, open this to our employees. Tell the design department that the top ten design drafts based on these stories will receive a massive two-fold increase in their monthly performance bonuses."

Declan paused, his eyebrows shooting up in genuine surprise. "That is a huge move. The budget for those bonuses alone will be staggering."

"Extraordinary times call for extraordinary measures. Execute it without delay. The era of the old timers is officially over." Sloane smiled with a lethal kind of confidence.

The heavy mahogany door clicked shut behind Declan. Almost immediately, her private cell phone buzzed on the coffee table. The caller ID flashed Ronan’s name. Sloane picked it up reluctantly, knowing his mid-day calls rarely brought peace.

"What is the emergency?"

Ronan’s voice crackled through the speaker, practically vibrating with rage. "You need to check the internet right now! That manipulative vixen has brainwashed your ex. They are publicly claiming you came between their relationship!"

Sloane frowned, her fingers flying across her tablet to pull up the day’s trending topics. She did not have to search hard. A lengthy post sat at the very top of the feed, published directly by the Vance Group's verified official account. It formally announced Kaelen and Valeria’s upcoming wedding.

She skimmed the paragraphs. The corporate statement painted a sickeningly sweet picture of Kaelen and Valeria’s romantic history, establishing Valeria as his one true love. Worse, the condescending text framed Sloane as a common peasant girl who had ignorantly intruded upon a beautiful romance. It even praised Valeria’s boundless tolerance of Kaelen’s past, wishing Sloane luck in finding a socially compatible partner.

Sloane let out a short, derisive snort.

Breathing heavily into the receiver, Ronan demanded, "Are you not furious? How dare they use the official company channels to humiliate you like this? I am going to teach that bastard a lesson he will never forget."

"There is no need for that. Stand down." Sloane kept her voice calm, analyzing the text with clinical detachment.

"You are still speaking up for that bastard?" Ronan shouted in disbelief.

"I am doing no such thing. Kaelen is ruthless, but he operates with pride. He would never stoop so low as to use his corporate PR team for high school drama. Valeria clearly bypassed him and posted this on her own."

She glanced at the publication timestamp on the Vance Group account. A cold, predatory smile curved her lips.

"I mean it, Ronan. Do not retaliate. Valeria will pay the price for this stunt on her own. Kaelen is the one who is about to have a massive headache."

"Fine. I will hold off." Ronan grumbled, sounding exasperated by her icy composure before disconnecting the call.

Sloane tossed the phone onto the desk. She leaned back, viewing the viral smear campaign as a pathetic joke. Once upon a time, reading those words might have broken her. But the moment she signed that divorce agreement, Sloane Hawkins died. She had given him up. Kaelen Vance and his toxic circus were no longer her problem, and she was content to sit back and watch them tear each other apart.
