The Luna's Awakening
Lumina POV
"You look stunning, honey." My mother wipes a rogue tear from her cheek, her eyes shining with immense pride.
I stand perfectly still, staring at my reflection in the ornate, full-length mirror inside the pack house fitting room. The teal, A-line gown sweeps the wooden floor in elegant folds. It is wrapped tightly at the waist with a thick black sash, specifically chosen to honor our pack colors. The grand Alpha and Luna ceremony is only two days away. It is the single most anticipated event of the decade. Deep down, I know I should be thrilled. I should be vibrating with endless excitement, counting down the hours until Kaelen stands beside me in front of everyone.
Instead, a profound, heavy ache sits squarely in the center of my chest.
Luna Nadine steps back, her hands clasped together beneath her chin as she admires the dress. "You are going to be an incredible Luna, Lumina. My son could not have found a more perfect mate. The entire pack is buzzing with anticipation for Friday."
I force a bright, convincing smile onto my face. "Thank you, Luna Nadine. I feel beautiful in this. I still cannot believe it is happening so fast."
But the smile does not reach my soul. I make my excuses shortly after, needing the quiet solace of my own room. As I walk down the busy corridors, the real reason for my sorrow weighs on my shoulders. My relationship with my older brother, Corbin, is fractured beyond repair. Over the past six months, my brother has turned into a cold, distant stranger. He used to be my fierce protector, the person I went to for everything. Now, he treats me like a disease. Whenever I am near, a suffocating, venomous hostility rolls off him in dark, punishing waves.
I have mentally bent over backwards trying to rationalize his sudden change. I convinced myself his hatred stems from a deep-seated jealousy over losing his lifelong best friend, Kaelen, to me. Before Kaelen publicly claimed me as his mate, he and Corbin were attached at the hip. When Corbin abruptly packed his belongings and moved into the room directly next to Kaelen's on the restricted Alpha floor, I thought it was Kaelen's way of keeping his Beta and best friend close. I thought Corbin was just grieving the loss of his friend's undivided attention. Now, we do not speak at all. The silence between us is a physical weight dragging me down.
I close my bedroom door and lie back on my mattress, staring up at the ceiling. Suddenly, a strange, intense, and consuming heat begins radiating from deep within my core. It catches me off guard. The heat spreads rapidly through my bloodstream like liquid fire. My skin flushes. I kick off my heavy blanket, panting as the temperature in my body spikes to an unbearable degree. Werewolves naturally run warm, but this is different. This feels like my very veins are melting.
A clear, soft, feminine voice echoes clearly inside my mind. "Do not panic, my perfect Lumi. There is nothing wrong with you."
I shoot up in bed. My heart hammers against my ribs like a trapped bird. A massive surge of pure excitement crashes through the lingering fear. Inner wolves usually introduce themselves on our birthdays, and mine coincides directly with the ceremony in two days. She is miraculously awakening early.
The gentle voice continues. "My name is Vela. I am your wolf. I am so excited to finally meet you."
I clutch the bedsheets in my fists. "Vela. I am so happy to hear your voice. Can we shift now?"
Her giggle chimes in my head, a sound of gentle authority. "Do you trust me, Lumi?"
"Of course I do, Vela. We are one."
"Then I need you to slip quietly away to the forest clearing. You must go alone. I know you want Kaelen here for this, but I insist you do not tell him. Do not invite him along."
I frown. Mates almost always share the sacred milestone of a first shift. But Vela’s tone leaves no room for argument. I trust her unwavering intuition. I slip out of my room, creeping silently down the back stairs. I dodge the busy omegas preparing for the ceremony and bypass the main living areas, stepping out into the cool night air. I break into a run until I reach the edge of the tree line, pushing deeper into the secluded forest clearing.
The liquid fire in my blood flares into a blazing inferno.
Vela warns me with a serious tone. "Shifting for the first time is going to hurt. I cannot shield you from this agonizing pain. But I promise I will be with you every single step."
I nod. The moment I surrender to the shift, blinding fire rips through my body. I drop to my hands and knees on the damp earth. A ragged gasp tears from my throat. My skin feels like it is peeling away, burning from the inside out. I grit my teeth, locking my jaw to hold back a piercing scream. My bones snap. The loud cracks echo in the quiet clearing. My spine lengthens, muscles tearing and reforming in rapid, blinding flashes of agony.
Vela encourages me, her presence a soothing balm against the physical torture. "You are doing amazing. Give in to it."
I cling to her praise. The snapping and grinding reach a fever pitch before suddenly locking into perfect alignment. The fire extinguishes. The agonizing pain vanishes in a split second, replaced by an explosive rush of endless power. I open my eyes and look down at the forest floor. Beautiful, shimmering silver paws rest on the grass. A breathless laugh echoes in my mind. I trot over to a small pond near the edge of the clearing. Staring back at me is a breathtaking silver wolf with my exact eye color.
"You are stunning, Vela."
"We are beautiful, Lumi. Let us run."
I push off my powerful hind legs and launch into the thick trees. The subsequent run through the moonlit forest is purely euphoric. The cool wind rushes through my silver fur. My paws tear at the soft dirt, propelling us forward. My senses are dialed up to an intoxicating degree. I smell the damp pine needles and feel the heartbeat of the forest beneath my paws. But despite the sheer joy of the run, Vela remains frustratingly and cryptically silent about her specific reasoning for why Kaelen could not be with us tonight. She deflects my questions, pushing us to run faster under the bright moon.
Eventually, we circle back to the clearing. I shift back into my human form, slipping my sundress back on over my skin. A bright, uncontainable smile stretches across my face as I walk back toward the pack house. I have my mate. I have my inner wolf. My life is finally falling into a perfect rhythm.
That euphoria shatters the moment my bare feet cross the threshold into the silent pack house.
A deep, hollow, and sickening dull ache forms in the pit of my stomach. It twists with vicious intent. I press a hand to my abdomen, asking internally. "Vela, what is wrong?"
Her voice echoes in my head, dropping a revelation so devastating it stops my heart from beating. "Our mate is betraying us. He is unfaithful to our bond."
I freeze in the dim hallway. "No. That is a lie. Kaelen would never be unfaithful to me. He does not even look at other girls."
Vela is relentless, fiercely urging me forward. "Go to his room, Lumi. See the ugly truth for yourself."
I shake my head, mentally fighting her as I trudge toward the stairs leading up to the restricted Alpha floor. I refuse to believe it. But a sudden wave of deep nausea hits me. Bitter bile rises in the back of my throat. As I near the top of the stairs, my newly enhanced wolf hearing picks up a distinct noise.
I walk down the long, carpeted hallway toward his heavy oak door.
Slap. Slap. Slap.
It is the unmistakable, sickeningly rhythmic sound of wet skin slapping hard against skin. Breathy, harsh moans filter through the solid wood door. My heart drops into my stomach. My entire body turns to ice.
Then, Kaelen's deep, recognizable voice moans out, sending a paralyzing shock straight down my spine. "You like that, don't you, love?"
Tears instantly prick my eyes. The sound physically paralyzes me. My fated mate is inside that room with someone else. A person he is calling his love. Gathering every single ounce of my shattered courage, I reach for the brass handle. He did not lock it. No pack member is allowed on this floor anyway.
I push the heavy oak door wide open without a sound.
My entire universe collapses in a fraction of a second.
My mate is not intimately entangled with another girl. Kaelen is vigorously thrusting his hips forward, burying his thick, hard penis deep inside my own brother. They are having sex. Kaelen's hands grip Corbin's hips tightly, pulling him back to meet every brutal, wet thrust.
Corbin’s inexplicable jealousy over the last six months. His sudden move to the room next door. His raw, suffocating hatred for me. It all makes agonizing, horrific sense. He was not jealous of Kaelen spending time with me. He was furious that he had to share the man he was sleeping with.
The creak of the door hinges makes them freeze in place. Kaelen snaps his head back. His eyes widen in pure terror and immense guilt as he abruptly pulls his cock out. His chest heaves, slick with sweat.
I shift my gaze to my brother. Corbin is flushed, out of breath, lying amidst the tangled white sheets. A smug, victorious smile stretches slowly across his face. He knows exactly what he has done. He looks at me like he has won the ultimate prize.
I turn blindly. I flee frantically down the long, carpeted hallway, gasping for air as if I am drowning in a freezing ocean. The betrayal slices my chest wide open.
Kaelen's frantic voice echoes behind me. "Lumina, wait!"
I hear his bare feet slapping against the floorboards. He scrambles after me, stark naked. His large, sweaty hands grab my upper arms, digging into my skin to stop my flight.
I spin around with explosive fury. I swing my arm and slap him as hard as I possibly can directly across his face.
The loud crack echoes off the hallway walls. Kaelen's head snaps to the side.
I seethe, my voice trembling with pure venom. "Do not touch me ever again."
He looks back at me. Raw desperation swims in his wide, panicked eyes. "Lumina, please. You are my mate. The love of my life."
A sharp, incredibly bitter laugh scrapes its way up my raw throat. "Am I your love, or is Corbin? I just heard you tell my brother you love him. So which is it, Kaelen?"
He looks down at the floor, his shoulders slumping as he whispers shamefully. "I am in love with you both."
The final thread of my attachment snaps in two. The bond inside my chest goes ice cold.
I tell him coldly, glaring right through him. "That is too bad. Because my love died the exact second I walked into that room and saw you betraying me together."
Kaelen pleads, reaching out an inch before pulling his hand back. "Please, Lumina, do not say that. We can fix this. You are my Luna."
Footsteps approach from behind him. Corbin steps up intimately beside Kaelen. He is hastily adjusting his gym shorts, not bothering to cover his bare chest. His gaze is cruel, devoid of any brotherly affection. He looks at me like I am a pest he wants to crush under his shoe.
Corbin spits the words out like venom. "Stop being such a selfish bitch, Lumi. You are going to have to learn to share."
I stare at the two men standing shoulder to shoulder. The brother who was supposed to protect me from the world, and the mate who swore to cherish me for a lifetime. They have destroyed my life. Stiffening my spine to its utmost limit, calling upon every ounce of my newly awakened Luna strength, I refuse to shed a single tear in front of them.
I look squarely into Kaelen's terrified eyes.
"I, Lumina Skye Vance, reject you, Kaelen Silas Thorne, as my mate and Alpha."
The words carry a heavy finality. A searing, physical snap echoes in the silent hallway.
"No!" Kaelen screams.
It is a horrific, guttural sound of pure agony. He drops to his knees, clutching his bare chest as the broken bond shreds his heart. He gasps for air, tears streaming down his face.
Corbin roars in blind fury, his face contorting with rage. "You fucking pathetic bitch! How dare you reject your mate!"
He steps forward in a sudden blur of motion. Before I can react or raise my hands to defend myself, Corbin's heavy fist connects directly with my jaw. An explosion of white-hot pain erupts in my head. The sheer force of the blow throws me backward. My head cracks against the hard floor. Darkness engulfs me, and I welcome the numbness.
