The Alpha's Command
POV: MAEVIA
The grounding energy of the Wolfstone bracelet had barely settled around my wrist when my inner wolf surged forward. She shattered the fragile peace I had just found, tearing through my mental barriers and seizing control of my senses. Carried on the crisp morning wind was the unmistakable cedar-and-smoke scent of Torin. It was a heavy, dominant scent I had known intimately for years. Today it was intertwined with the foreign, cloying sweetness of white lilies. I did not pause to think. The betrayal burned hot in my veins.
Nia called out behind me in a startled voice. "Maevia, wait!"
I ignored her. My boots hit the dirt path with heavy purpose as I marched straight out of the tree line. I headed toward the public pavilion at the center of the bustling pack square.
Torin stood there in the bright morning light. His tall, broad frame was relaxed in a way I had not witnessed since our earliest days together. Clutched securely in his strong arms was the young girl. She rested her small head against his broad shoulder. Vanya Kaelen stood intimately close at his side. She was looking up at him, laughing softly at something he had just murmured. The easy, domestic warmth surrounding the three of them felt like a rusted blade twisting in my chest.
That warmth vanished in a fraction of a second. Torin's dark eyes lifted over the crowd and locked onto mine. Vanya stiffened beside him, her soft smile freezing on her face. The child remained unaware, her small fingers tangled in the collar of Torin's dark tunic.
I stopped a few paces away. For a long moment, the air between us stretched thin and tight. No one spoke.
My voice cut through the morning stillness with unnatural calm. "You lied to me."
A volcano was erupting beneath my skin, yet I kept my posture rigid. My inner wolf hovered at the very edge of my consciousness, alert and bearing her teeth.
Torin’s jaw ticked as his relaxed posture hardened into that of an untouchable ruler. "Maevia, this is not the place."
Whispers erupted among the gathering pack members and sentries lining the square. I could feel their collective attention shifting toward the unfolding drama. I held his gaze, refusing to bend under his Alpha presence. "You told me you were at the northern border handling critical pack matters. You were not at the border last night, Torin. Where were you?"
A dangerous tension coiled in the air. Torin did not break eye contact with me. Without looking away, he transferred the little girl into Vanya's arms.
He issued a low command. "Take her."
Vanya lingered for a brief second. Her wide eyes brimmed with calculated vulnerability as she clutched the child to her chest. "Torin, I can explain—"
Torin left no room for hesitation. "Go. Now."
Vanya turned and hurried away from the open ground, slipping past the murmuring crowd. The little girl peered over Vanya's shoulder once, but they quickly vanished from sight.
Torin closed the distance between us in two predatory strides. "You are drawing attention."
I met his imposing height with raw defiance. "I do not care."
His fingers clamped around my forearm like iron bands. The sheer force of his grip was unbreakable. "I do."
I demanded through gritted teeth. "Torin, let go of me."
Torin dragged me away from the murmuring onlookers. "Not here."
I tried to plant my feet into the dirt to resist his pull, but it was useless against his brute strength. Several pack members parted in a rush to avoid his path, lowering their heads in immediate submission. No one dared to step in. Torin shoved me toward a heavy armored transport vehicle parked beside the administrative hall. He hauled the thick metal door open.
I braced my hand against the frame. "I am not getting in there."
His voice cracked like a whip in the open air, saturated with the raw, crushing authority of the Alpha Command. "Sit, Maevia."
The ancient, instinctual dominance bypassed my conscious mind. My knees buckled under the invisible, suffocating pressure of his tone. My body betrayed my mind, planting me firmly onto the cold leather seat inside the cab. I despised the physical submission. I hated the way my blood cooled in a single breath. My inner wolf thrashed against the unnatural constraint, howling her furious frustration at being forced to yield to her mate in such a manner.
Torin stepped inside the vehicle. He slammed the heavy door shut, sealing us in. He engaged the soundproof mechanisms, plunging us into total isolation. The outside noise of the bustling pack square vanished.
The moment his crushing Alpha aura receded enough for me to move, I wrenched my arm out of his iron grasp. I rubbed my bruised skin, glaring across the small space. "Explain."
Torin adjusted the cuffs of his tunic. His face remained a mask of immaculate, impenetrable calm. Yet, the slight tension in his broad shoulders betrayed his arrogance. "There is nothing to explain that warrants this theatrical display in front of the pack."
I let out a harsh laugh devoid of any humor. "A child called you 'Daddy' through your private communication tablet, Torin! I heard her with my own ears! Do not dare stand there and insult my intelligence!"
Torin leveled his dark eyes on mine with freezing certainty. "She is not mine."
I searched his rigid face for any flicker of hesitation. There was none. "Then who is she?"
Torin answered without missing a beat. "Her name is Lily. She is Vanya's daughter. Her father was an allied commander. He was a brave warrior who threw himself in front of a blade to save my life during the border conflict six years ago. He died so that I could return home to this pack. I owe him a sacred blood debt."
The revelation hung heavy in the stale air. "And that debt includes playing house with them?"
Torin replied in a flat, unyielding tone. "It includes ensuring their total safety and providing sanctuary in our lands."
I leaned forward on the bench. The excuse rang hollow against the vivid reality I had just witnessed. Hot tears burned the corners of my eyes. "You cut the communication line the second she spoke to you. You carry her through the open pack square. You let her cling to your neck. You accept food from Vanya's bare hands and wear her flower crowns at Moon Hall. That is not a blood debt, Torin. That is not keeping your distance."
Torin stared at me. His eyes darkened, taking on a hard, unsympathetic edge. "You are reading emotional nonsense into actions dictated solely by honor and duty."
I shot back. "Duty does not look like that."
Torin drew himself up to his towering height in the confined space. His imposing posture locked into a stance of ultimate authority. "This is not up for interpretation. They will be moving into the main estate. Today."
The declaration struck me like a physical blow. It knocked the air straight from my lungs. The small metal cabin shrunk in on me.
My voice shook with raw, desperate defiance as I shook my head, rejecting his words. "No. That is not happening. You do not get to decide that unilaterally. That estate is our home."
Torin corrected sharply, his voice dropping into ruthless Alpha certainty. "The estate belongs to the Drakos Pack. And I am the Alpha."
My wolf clawed at the surface of my skin, screaming against the blazing injustice of his decree. "And I am your mate! That position should command respect! You are bringing another she-wolf and her child into our home without even consulting me!"
Torin crossed his arms, unmoved by my mounting distress. "I am informing you now."
The air grew thin. I felt cold sweat gathering on my palms as the reality of his tyranny crushed my chest. "That is not the same thing, Torin. You do not get to replace my presence in my own home."
Torin gritted his teeth. "I am not replacing you. This arrangement is a necessity."
I demanded an answer. "For who? For them, or for you?"
Torin offered nothing but a heavy, stony silence.
I stared at the rigid set of his jaw. The silence stretched until it felt like a massive boulder pressing down on my ribcage. I wiped a stray tear from my cheek, letting my voice drop into a low, tight whisper. "If Vanya and that child cross the threshold of our home, everything between us will shatter beyond repair."
Torin met my gaze head-on. He refused to offer a single ounce of compromise or understanding. "It already has."
His words cut deep. They severed something vital inside me. I looked at him. I really looked at the man I had loved and served for five long years. I tasted the bitter ash of his absolute tyranny over me. The final cord of affection snapped in my soul, leaving behind a cold, dark void.
I stared at his face, my voice devoid of any warmth. "So that is it? No discussion. No mutual agreement. Just your final word."
Torin confirmed with a hard glare. "Yes. This is not a negotiation, Maevia. It is an order."
I sat back against the leather seat, pulling my defensive walls up high to block out the pain. "Understood."
Torin scrutinized my sudden stillness. He searched my blank, emotionless face for any remaining signs of rebellion. When he found nothing but a hollow stare, he turned and unlocked the heavy vehicle door.
He stepped down into the bright daylight, adjusting his collar to perfection. "I have pack matters to attend to. We will speak later if needed."
Torin shut the door behind him with a solid thud, leaving me trapped in the darkness.
