Claiming Her Place
Nadia.
This wasn't the beautiful wedding I had always envisioned for myself as a little girl. Instead of a joyous day rooted in genuine vows and true love, I found myself legally bound to Cassian Thorne simply because I bore his child. There was no fairytale romance, no lingering kiss at the altar to seal a lifetime of devotion. There was only a suffocating contract, a sudden shift in my reality, and the weight of a diamond ring on my finger that felt more like a brand than a promise. The ride from the venue had been tense, Cassian’s parting words echoing in my head. He had made it clear that he was not going to play the role of a saint in this marriage.
The armored car finally rolled to a smooth stop outside our massive new estate. The sheer scale of the Thorne property was intimidating. It was a sprawling fortress of dark stone, towering columns, and tinted glass that screamed old money and ruthless power. Armed guards patrolled the perimeter, their rifles slung casually over their shoulders. This was not a home; it was a compound designed to keep enemies out and secrets in.
I stepped out into the crisp evening air, pulling my coat tighter around my shoulders to ward off the biting chill. Cassian disappeared into a side hall with a handful of his top lieutenants the second we crossed the threshold, his mind already shifting from our wedding to the brutal realities of his criminal empire. He left me standing alone in the center of the grand foyer, feeling out of place amidst the Italian marble and crystal chandeliers.
Martha appeared from a side corridor, wiping her hands on her apron. She offered me a sympathetic smile as she approached.
"You look exhausted, child. I saw the circulating news reports of the wedding," Martha said gently. She kept her voice low, glancing cautiously toward the hallway where Cassian had vanished. "Everyone is talking about your family's hostile mistreatment toward you. It was terrifying, seeing Cassian fiercely defend you like that. Pointing a loaded gun directly at your abuser's head in front of the flashing cameras... the press is having a field day with it. I have never seen a man look so ready to commit murder."
I stubbornly brushed it off, forcing my spine straight. My heartbeat still thrummed a chaotic, anxious rhythm against my ribs when I thought about the cold steel of Cassian's gun pressing against Zane's temple.
"They were never truly family to me anyway, Martha. I am just glad it is over." I sighed, rubbing my aching temples. "I do not care what the media says about the incident. Let them talk. I survived worse from the Russos."
Martha nodded slowly, though her eyes held a lingering worry. She turned and headed back toward the massive kitchen, murmuring something about preparing tea to calm my nerves.
Seeking a quiet space to gather my chaotic thoughts and escape the suffocating grandeur of the hallway, I made my way down the corridor and stepped into the lavish sitting room.
The momentary peace I craved shattered instantly.
Petra was waiting for me.
She stood near the grand fireplace, a crystal glass of bourbon loosely gripped in her hand. Her dark eyes locked onto me the second I entered the room. She did not look like a guest stopping by to drop off a gift. She looked like a woman who owned the house, inspecting a fresh, unwanted intruder. The scowl on her face was sharp enough to draw blood.
"What are you doing here?" I asked firmly, squaring my shoulders and refusing to let her see my exhaustion.
Petra took a slow, deliberate sip of her drink. A mocking smirk curled her painted lips.
"I am just putting things in place for the newlyweds. Someone has to ensure things are running smoothly," Petra replied coolly, her tone dripping with condescension.
I stepped further into the room, determined to hold my ground. I needed to establish my boundaries immediately. Trying to assert my new, rightful position in the household, I lifted my chin and met her hostile glare head-on.
"You are not welcome in our matrimonial home, Petra. I want you to leave. Now."
Her eyes narrowed with pure venom. She set her glass down on the mahogany side table with a sharp, aggressive clink, closing the distance between us. The scent of her heavy, expensive perfume clogged the air, making me want to gag.
"Do you honestly believe your opinion matters here, Nadia? Just because you are Cassian's wife now?" Petra spat the words out mercilessly. "You are nothing. You do not even remember your real name. You have no history, no connections, no power. Do you actually think Cassian would ever stoop so low as to marry a nobody like you for any reason other than your daughter? You forced a child on him."
Her toxic words struck a raw nerve, mercilessly mocking my forgotten, amnesiac past. She had clearly dug into my history. I clenched my hands into tight fists at my sides, my nails biting into my palms to ground myself.
"My opinion matters no matter who I am. I am his wife, and you are not allowed in here if I do not want you here," I shot back proudly.
Petra laughed, a harsh, grating sound that bounced off the high ceiling. She stepped uncomfortably close, leaning in so I could see the terrifying conviction in her eyes.
"You have to know your place, Nadia. You two might have exchanged vows, but he's mine. He is my true fiancé, and everyone in our world knows it." Petra smirked with infuriating confidence, boldly declaring herself as his. "He'll always come to me. You are just an obligation. So be a good and submissive wife to him, okay? Stay out of my way."
She turned on her heel and strutted out of the sitting room without another word, leaving the toxic echo of her voice ringing loudly in my ears.
I stood frozen in the center of the sprawling room, physically trembling. My chest felt tight, my breathing turning shallow and erratic. I wrapped my arms around my waist, trying desperately to hold myself together. I had been unloved for as long as I could remember. I did not actually expect Cassian's romantic love; I knew the brutal terms of our arrangement. But the sudden thought of him being engaged, of him being devoted and tied to another woman, hurt me in a strange, deep way. An ugly, twisting knot of jealousy and profound insecurity formed heavily in my gut.
Pushing the gnawing doubts and the image of Petra aside, I forcefully reminded myself of my true priorities. I retreated upstairs to my separate, designated bedroom. I needed to wash the scent of the violent wedding, the gunpowder, and Petra's toxic perfume off my skin. I stripped off my heavy dress and stepped under the scalding spray of the shower. I scrubbed my skin until it was pink, forcing my mind away from Cassian's dark eyes and Petra's vicious claims. I thought back to my days in Texas, working grueling shifts at the diner just to keep the lights on. My daughter, Cassia, was the only thing that mattered in this cold, calculated arrangement. I had signed my life away to secure her expensive medical care. Nothing else held any weight.
After drying off, I slipped into a thin, silky pink nightgown Martha had laid out on the mattress. The delicate material was soft against my heated skin, clinging slightly to my damp body. I sat on the edge of the large, unfamiliar bed, staring blankly at the dark mahogany furniture, when a voice broke through my heavy thoughts.
"Nadia! Cassia is finally back from the hospital!" Martha called out happily from the downstairs hallway.
A massive jolt of panic and relief fired through my veins. My chest bloomed with warmth at the mention of my little girl. I sprang up from the mattress, abandoning my dark thoughts, and rushed barefoot out of the bedroom. I took the grand staircase two steps at a time, my heart hammering wildly against my ribcage.
I burst into the grand estate foyer and skidded to a halt.
Cassia was standing there in her little pink coat, looking exhausted but undeniably safe. Her tiny, fragile fingers were wrapped securely and safely in Cassian's massive hand. The stark contrast between his lethal, imposing frame and her tiny body made the breath catch sharply in my throat.
Cassian shifted his wide stance, his dark eyes meeting mine. The hard, ruthless edge he wore around the rest of the world softened by a fraction.
"Her leukemia treatment is finished for the day. The doctors ran their tests. She needs to be checked regularly, but she is okay now," Cassian softly reassured me, his deep voice wrapping around my frayed nerves.
I practically threw myself across the remaining distance and scooped her up into my arms. Cassia let out a tired, contented sigh and buried her little face deep in my neck. I squeezed my eyes shut, inhaling the beautiful scent of baby shampoo and hospital antiseptic. She was alive. She was fighting this horrible disease.
"How have you been, redhen? I missed you so much," I whispered softly, kissing her forehead.
She pulled back slightly to look at my face. She looked up at me with a bright, beautiful smile that melted away every ounce of fear and insecurity I carried.
Then, she parted her lips and uttered her very first word.
"Da-da."
The sprawling foyer fell dead silent.
My motherly heart swelled immensely, threatening to burst right out of my chest. I blinked, utterly stunned, staring down at my precious daughter. She had never spoken a single word before. It was sloppy and quiet, but it was real.
"Da-da," Cassia repeated, looking straight at Cassian.
Cassian froze. He stood perfectly still, looking at Cassia with pure, unadulterated adoration. The notorious, cold-blooded Mafia boss looked entirely undone by a simple two-syllable babble from a sick toddler. The raw emotion pooling in his dark eyes was breathtaking.
I let out a wet, breathless laugh, playfully teasing my daughter as I bounced her gently on my hip.
"Really, redhen? I have known you for your entire life, and you choose him over me? What about me?"
Martha chuckled warmly from the doorway, stepping forward to take Cassia from my arms.
"Let me get this little angel up to her new room for some much-needed rest. You two should rest as well," Martha offered gently, carrying a sleepy Cassia up the grand staircase.
Overwhelmed by the profound, tender family moment, hot tears gathered in my eyes. I turned to face Cassian. The harsh reality of his criminal empire, the violent wedding, Petra's cruel claims—it all faded into the background. He was saving my daughter's life. He was giving her a future I could never afford on my own.
"Thank you so much," I mouthed silently, genuinely grateful for every single thing he was doing to save her life.
Cassian stepped closer, his heavy leather boots making no sound on the imported marble floor. His thick brow furrowed as he studied my wet face.
"Why?" Cassian questioned, his tone a mixture of confusion and scrutiny. "Are you feeling unusually emotional again today?"
I wiped a stray tear from my cheek, letting out a shaky breath. I tried to formulate a coherent response, shrugging my shoulders weakly. "I don't know. I just feel incredibly grateful."
His intense gaze suddenly dropped from my eyes, trailing slowly down the entire length of my body.
The foyer was drafty, the cool air biting harshly against my bare skin. My thin, silky pink nightgown did absolutely nothing to hide my body from him. The delicate fabric clung tightly to my curves, highlighting the undeniable fact that I was braless. My perked, hard nipples pressed blatantly and obscenely against the thin silk, fully reacting to the cold air and the sudden, heavy weight of his dominant stare.
Cassian's jaw ticked visibly. The muscle in his cheek feathered as he clenched his teeth. His dark eyes darkened with undeniable, raw desire. The space between us instantly thickened, turning heavy and combustible.
A strange, powerful satisfaction washed over me at his blatant, physical reaction. Petra's venomous voice echoed in my head, claiming he was fully hers, but looking at him right now, I held his undivided attention. His body was reacting to mine.
The predatory hunger in his gaze made my throat go dry. A sudden, heavy heat pooled low in my stomach, mimicking the reaction I had in the car earlier. I quickly crossed my arms over my chest, awkwardly trying to shield my perked, hard nipples from his devouring stare.
"I will go to sleep now," I excused myself awkwardly, my voice coming out slightly hoarse. I spun around and took a hasty step toward the stairs, desperate to escape the escalating sexual tension.
"Nadia."
His voice cracked like a whip through the quiet foyer, sharp and commanding.
I stopped in my tracks, my spine stiffening instantly. I turned back around just as Cassian closed the physical distance between us in brisk, predatory steps. He moved with lethal grace, stopping mere inches from me. His massive frame boxed me in, radiating a dangerous, intoxicating heat that made my pulse race.
He reached into the inner pocket of his tailored suit jacket and pulled out an exclusive black credit card. He held it out to me, firmly ordering me to take it.
"Go splurging tomorrow," Cassian commanded, his eyes locked onto mine. "Buy everything you want and need."
I stared at the black card, my stubborn pride instantly flaring up. I took a step back, refusing to take it from him.
"I do not think you know me, Cassian. I have enough money. I insist proudly that I did not marry you for your immense wealth. I can take care of myself without your funds," I fired back loudly, keeping my hands glued to my sides.
Cassian did not blink. His large hand shot forward, grabbing my wrist with lightning, inescapable speed. He did not hurt me, but his grip was unyielding and possessive. He forcefully pressed the cold plastic card directly into the palm of my hand, closing my trembling fingers over it.
"And I don't think you have realized it yet, Mrs. Thorne," he emphasized deeply, his voice a dark, vibrating rumble that sent a shiver straight down my spine. "You're my wife now. You'll spend my money and only my money. Go shopping tomorrow, and get yourself more of that sexy nightgown while you're at it."
My eyes widened in shock at his explicit last words.
Before I could even process the heat rushing to my cheeks, or form a single word of protest, Cassian released my hand. He walked right past me without a second glance, his broad shoulders disappearing down the dark hallway, leaving me breathless and grappling with his blatant physical desires.
