A Bitter Homecoming
Tessa walked through the parted iron gates. Armed soldiers marched outward in synchronized, tight formation to meet her. Their boots struck the pavement with deliberate respect. They formed two crisp lines along the entrance, snapping into rigid attention to offer a flawless salute. Once she passed the threshold, Commander Conrad Briggs emerged from the administrative wing. He wore his crisp dress uniform. His demeanor was heavy with a deep regret. He cradled a black ebony urn against his chest. A vibrant flag draped over the dark wood, displaying the bold stars and stripes.
The emotional impact hit Tessa with the force of a physical blow. Her breath caught in her throat. Those shared ashes were all that remained of the mother and father who deployed overseas with the Vanguard Shield Regiment years ago. They had answered the call of duty knowing the terrible risks. Tessa remembered watching them pack their deployment bags for the final time. They had hugged her tight and promised to return, a promise broken by the brutal reality of war.
"Tessa." Conrad stopped in front of her. "When the recovery team located your parents, their remains were found together. We brought them back cremated as one abroad. Everything is right in here."
She stared down at the folded flag resting over the ebony container. A small mercy blanketed her devastating sorrow. "That is beautiful, Commander. Mom and Dad were deeply in love. Staying by each other's side for eternity is exactly what they would have wanted."
Conrad nodded at her quiet grace. He stood taller and extended the heavy urn toward her. "To our fallen heroes, forever in our hearts!"
The voices of the soldiers behind him echoed the tribute. "To our fallen heroes, forever in our hearts!"
The thunderous salute roared over the concrete courtyard, shaking the hazy sky. Tessa held her spine straight. She pushed down the stinging heat behind her eyes and delivered a solemn salute to Conrad and the surrounding troops. A mix of pride and devastating sorrow surged through her chest. She stepped forward to take the urn from his hands. The weight in her arms provided a strange comfort. Her family was finally coming home.
Conrad softened his rigid posture once the formal handover concluded. "Where is that husband of yours? He did not accompany you on a day like this?"
Tessa masked her pain with a hollow excuse, tightening her grip on the smooth wood. "His schedule has been demanding lately. Declan is swamped with the company and could not make it."
The seasoned commander easily spotted the profound marital exhaustion haunting her features. He had watched the fiery soldier grow into an elite operative, and the woman standing before him looked worn down to the bone. He reached out and offered a firm, supportive pat on her shoulder. "You hit a rough patch, you come straight to me. This old man still has some pull. The military will always be your true family. Our doors are open whenever you need us, Tessa."
"Thank you, Commander Briggs." Tessa offered a faint, grateful smile before carrying her parents to the car.
Tessa drove away from the comforting solidarity of the base. The quiet respect she experienced there posed a brutal contrast to the toxic environment waiting for her at the villa. She parked her car in the wide driveway and carried the sacred urn toward the front door. She barely crossed the marble threshold when abrasive voices drifted from the living room.
Sylvia, her mother-in-law, was already aggressively campaigning for a change in the family dynamic. "Declan, now that Naomi is back in the country, you need to divorce Tessa. Naomi is a successful pilot now. She is the perfect match for you."
Declan sounded exhausted. "Mom, please drop it. Naomi is just a friend."
Piper scoffed loudly from the plush sofa. The venomous sister-in-law loved stirring the pot. "Friends do not look at each other the way you two do! Everyone knows you are crazy about Naomi. She holds a fancy degree and just became the first female captain at Zenith Airlines. What does Tessa have? Zero status. She brings nothing to this family. She is not even close to being in your league!"
Tessa paused in the hallway. A chilling numbness spread through her veins. Piper was erasing the three grueling years Tessa had spent building Declan’s tech empire from the ground up. She went into the hospital with exhaustion, typing code while connected to IV drips, just to ensure his startup survived its first year. Did that mean nothing?
Piper glanced toward the entryway and sneered. "Well, look who decided to show up. You have quite the nerve sneaking around and eavesdropping on private conversations, Tessa!"
Tessa stepped fully into the room. She kept the sacred urn securely pressed against her chest. "I walked through the front door. There is no sneaking involved when you choose to yell across the first floor."
"Since you heard every word, do my brother a favor and pack your bags," Piper shot back. "You only snagged him because Naomi left for her training. Stop holding him back from a real woman."
"Piper, that is enough out of you," Declan muttered.
Piper crossed her arms. "I am just stating the facts!"
Declan rubbed the bridge of his nose before looking at his wife. His posture was slumped, the tailored suit clinging to a man who possessed no real backbone when it mattered most. His face flashed with raw guilt upon seeing the stark flag-draped ashes in her hands. He took a stumbling step forward. "Tessa, I am so sorry about missing the appointment. Naomi's mother twisted her ankle getting out of the car, and they needed my help at the clinic. It took longer than I expected."
Tessa did not have a chance to address his pathetic apology. Sylvia zeroed in on the black box, her eyes widening in sheer horror. She pointed a trembling, manicured finger at the wooden container.
"What on earth are you holding? Are those ashes?!" Sylvia shrieked.
Tessa stood her ground. "These are my parents' ashes. We finally brought them back to native soil."
Sylvia flailed her arms, her face contorting with disgust. "You dare bring dead remains into my son's house? Have you lost your mind? Get that cursed thing out of here right this instant!"
Tessa felt a fierce, protective anger ignite in her chest. She defended her heroic parents with a sharp, steady tone. "How dare you call them cursed? My parents were decorated military heroes. They sacrificed their lives to protect people like you. They deserve nothing but the utmost respect. Besides, this is my home too. The money I earned helped secure this property when Declan and I first got married."
"Your money? You mean the scraps you pulled together?" Piper laughed mockingly. "Declan bought this place. Mom just recovered from eye surgery, and the doctor said she cannot handle any stress. Tell Tessa to take that morbid garbage outside, Declan!"
Declan shifted uncomfortably under his sister's demand. Instead of backing his wife, he cowardly suggested a compromise. "Tessa, maybe you should just store the ashes in a locker somewhere else. Let us keep the peace for a few days."
Tessa stared at the man she married. Her suppressed fury began to boil over. "You want me to lock my parents away like discarded luggage? My flesh and blood?"
Declan refused to meet her gaze. His cowardly silence provided a clear confirmation.
"I have poured endless sacrifices into this family for three years, Declan." Tessa laid her struggles bare, her voice ringing with a dangerous edge. "When you were terrified your tech company would fold, I stayed up for weeks handling your overflow so you could sleep. When your mother developed severe cataracts, I used every connection I had left to book the top surgeon in the city. I saved her vision while you were away on a business trip! I treated all of you like family. Yet the single moment I need to honor my own fallen parents, you side with them."
"You did not build his company, and you only used his wealth to get that surgeon!" Piper yelled from the sofa.
Sylvia lost her temper. She refused to hear another word of defiance from the woman she viewed as a peasant. She stormed across the living room carpet, her face flushed with venomous rage. Before Tessa could brace herself, Sylvia raised her hand and delivered a brutal, stinging slap right across Tessa's face.
The loud crack echoed through the spacious room. Tessa staggered to the side, her cheek burning from the fierce impact. Before she could regain her balance, Sylvia lunged forward again. The older woman delivered a hard shove aimed directly at knocking the heavy ebony urn out of her hands.
