Unexpected Defender
POV: Third Person
A sharp gasp tore from Hazel's dry throat as Vane Silas Adler's iron grip arrested her arm in mid-air. He hoisted her away from the jagged shards of crystal littering the ballroom floor. The scorching heat radiating from his calloused hand sent a jolt of electricity racing through her fragile veins. The boisterous hall plunged into dead silence. The lively string quartet halted their instruments mid-note, their bows hovering over the vibration of the strings. The soft clinking of expensive champagne flutes and the steady drumroll of privileged chatter vanished altogether. Hundreds of elite guests turned their heads, their cold stares locking onto the chaotic scene unfolding near the head table.
Chloe, Caleb, Arthur, and Beatrice stood frozen against the backdrop of the white floral arrangements, a collective portrait of shock. Their eyes remained glued on the fearsome Lycan standing amidst the scattered cocktails and ruined crystal. Hazel’s heart hammered against her ribcage. Vane’s towering physique cast a massive shadow over her trembling frame, hiding her spilled, ruined black dress from the rest of the biting crowd.
Hurrying forward in her voluminous silk bridal gown, Chloe almost tripped over her own heavy embroidered hem. She plastered a nervous, simpering smile across her pale face, desperately trying to save face in front of the city's highest-ranking supernatural lords.
"Mr. Adler, please excuse this mess. Our servant was being clumsy." Chloe offered the soft, apologetic lie, shooting a venomous glare at Hazel from the corner of her eye, warning her to stay silent and take the blame.
Vane did not even glance at the bride. His jaw tightened into a harsh, unyielding line. His faint emerald gaze remained pinned on the malicious young woman in the bright orange gown who had deliberately tipped the cocktail glass just over a minute ago.
"Clean it up." Vane ordered. His voice rang with cold finality, echoing off the high vaulted ceilings of the lavish ballroom. The command carried a potent wave of raw authority, slicing through the tension like a sharpened blade.
The girl in the orange dress let out a stunned, indignant scoff. She tucked a wavy brown strand of hair behind her ear, her manicured face twisting into a mask of offended disbelief. She stared up at the formidable Lycan as if he had spoken in a foreign tongue.
"You are joking right?" She squeaked, crossing her bare arms over her chest in a futile attempt at defiance.
Vane took a measured, predatory step toward her. The suffocating dominance rolling off his broad chest forced the surrounding guests to press backward against the catering tables. The invisible weight of his aura squeezed the remaining air out of the room.
"Do I look like I am joking to you?" Vane demanded, a dangerous glint flickering in his striking emerald eyes. "I said clean it up. You knocked it over and messed the floor up. You ought to clean up your mess and not let someone do that in your stead."
Panic flared in the young girl's eyes. She stumbled backward, bumping her hip sharply into her polished dining chair. The cruel sneer she wore moments ago dissolved into raw terror.
"I am a guest here! I was invited by Chloe. Why should I clean it up? I am just a guest. It is not my job."
Beatrice quickly stepped between them, her designer heels clicking sharply against the marble floor. She flashed Vane a bright, placating smile, desperate to smooth over the escalating situation and shield her prized social circle.
"Mr. Adler, it is just broken pieces from a glass. It is no big deal, and besides, Hazel here does not have a problem cleaning it up. She is accustomed to domestic chores." Beatrice offered an airy wave of her hand, treating Hazel like a piece of dirty furniture.
Vane's eyes narrowed into terrifying slits. The temperature in the grand hall plummeted, a bone-chilling frost creeping over the marble tiles. His voice dropped into a lethal growl that rattled the delicate glassware on every single nearby banquet table.
"Are you ready to clean the mess you made on the floor, or do you want me to make you do it the hard way?"
The visceral threat hung heavy in the stale air. The girl in the orange gown paled, her painted lips trembling uncontrollably. She lost her voice. Beatrice shrank back, her false smile shattering under the weight of his murderous glare.
Arthur Belmont cleared his throat, adjusting the collar of his tailored tuxedo as he stepped forward to salvage his family's reputation.
"Adler, I do not think this is a big deal. Why are you making a mountain out of a molehill?"
Vane raised a single finger, silencing Hazel's father in the dead center of his sentence. He turned his strong jaw slightly toward the perimeter of the room.
"Jared." His thunderous voice commanded immediate attention.
A tall, broad-shouldered man in a sharp black suit emerged from the shadows near the grand entrance, marching briskly through the parted sea of guests toward the commotion. Jared bowed his head slightly as he reached his boss.
"I want you to remove these five people from the guest list." Vane pointed a decisive, unwavering finger at the group of arrogant friends huddled around the cocktail table. "Escort them out of here."
A loud gasp ripped from Chloe's throat. Her perfectly manicured hands flew to her mouth in sheer horror as the reality of the command set in.
"I will clean it if that is what you want! I invited them." Chloe burst out, stepping in front of her frightened friends. Tears of frustration welled in her eyes.
Vane fixed a hollow, lifeless stare on the desperate bride.
"Maybe you should have taught your friends table manners. I do not entertain rude guests in my hotel."
Hazel's heartbeat thudded brutally against her ribs. His hotel? The Grand Crest Hotel, the crown jewel venue of the entire supernatural district, belonged to Vane Silas Adler? The crushing realization washed over her. That explained the immediate, terrified silence the moment he arrived. Vane was the sole owner of the multi-million dollar property, exercising his ultimate authority over the high society standing on his floors.
"And mark their faces. Do not ever let any of them in this hotel ever again." Vane asserted.
Jared nodded grimly, signaling the private security detail lingering near the exits. Four burly guards in matching tactical uniforms locked onto the table, gripping the arms of Chloe's sputtering, protesting friends. The guards dragged the insolent group across the marble floors, hauling them past hundreds of staring eyes, forcing them toward the heavy mahogany doors, and tossing them out onto the dark pavement.
Chloe simmered in silent, impotent fury. Her face burned a stark crimson red, her chest heaving underneath her restrictive bridal bodice. She trapped her burning, vindictive gaze on Hazel, blaming her defenseless sister for creating the ultimate humiliation on her special day.
Hazel dropped her gaze to the floor, her cheeks burning with an unwanted flush. The broken glass still posed an immediate threat. The sticky orange ruin continued to spread across the pristine white tile. Decades of ingrained submission kicked in, drowning out the shock of being defended. She attempted to forcefully twist her slender wrist free from Vane's rigid grasp to clear the floor herself. She needed to fix this mess before the Belmonts punished her in the privacy of their home later.
"It is fine, sir. I will clean it up." Hazel whispered, avoiding the burning intensity of his green eyes.
Instead of releasing her aching arm, Vane tightened his iron hold. He yanked her firmly against his rigid side. The sudden, hard collision against his solid muscle sent a fresh jolt of primal heat rushing through her veins. His massive frame dwarfed hers, shielding her fragile, stained figure from the hundreds of judging eyes scanning the room.
He lifted his chin, surveying the quiet crowd with absolute disdain. He addressed the entire gathering in a raw, primal voice that vibrated like rolling thunder.
"And let this be known to you all, SHE IS MINE! And if any of you tries to mess with her, you have me to contend with. She belongs to me and I do not entertain the idea of people meddling with what belongs to me."
Hazel froze solid. The breath trapped itself painfully in her lungs. She stared up at his sharp jawline in utter bewilderment, her mind spinning out of control. Claimed? By the very man who had blatantly rejected her just a fortnight ago? What game was he playing? Why announce this to the world in such a brutal, uncompromising display?
Arthur Belmont's eyes flared with greedy, unfiltered triumph. He practically shoved the trembling Beatrice aside, eagerly stepping into the newly cleared space in front of the imposing Lycan.
"What are you saying, Mr. Adler? What do you mean? Are you perhaps accepting my offer in lieu of the Alaskan property deeds?" Arthur asked, a predatory grin already stretched wide across his face.
Hazel felt a sickening, dizzying spell wash over her. Trade. Property deeds. Her own flesh and blood father viewed her as nothing more than a tangible asset, a worthless bargaining chip used to settle a massive territorial debt with a ruthless Lycan king. She was a motherless, wolfless girl, standing before a sea of treacherous supernatural elites, being auctioned off without a single say in her own miserable fate.
Vane ignored Arthur's probing, desperate questions. He did not utter a single word of negotiation. He maintained his stoic expression, letting go of Hazel's wrist just long enough to reach across his own chest. His thick fingers unclasped a heavy, costly platinum chain bracelet from his own thick forearm. The gleaming metal locked onto the ambient light of the crystal chandeliers, flashing with undeniably immense wealth and ancient craftsmanship.
He reached for Hazel's slender arm, pulling her marked hand up for the high society to witness. With a sharp, heavy metallic click, he locked the thick platinum band firmly around her delicate wrist. The coolness of the extravagant metal seeped into her skin, feeling like a heavy, permanent shackle sealing the transactional ownership before the eyes of the entire city.
"She is mine now. I will not take it lightly with anyone who dares to insult or taunt her. Like I said earlier, I hate people who meddle with my property." Vane declared, his cold gaze piercing right through Arthur's greedy stature.
Arthur Belmont let out a low, satisfied chuckle, a sickening, fulfilled smile cementing onto his wrinkled face. He had won the gamble.
"So you will not come for the land later?" Arthur asked, solidifying the trade right then and there.
Within mere hours of the wedding reception's abrupt disruption, Hazel found herself staring blankly at the peeling wallpaper of her cramped attic room at Belmont Manor. The oppressive, familiar silence of the grand house weighed heavy on her drooping shoulders. She crouched over her small, lumpy mattress, packing her meager possessions into a faded, torn satchel. She folded her few threadbare dresses, patched sweaters, and worn undergarments. Treated as a disposable maid in her own father's sprawling house, she possessed no belongings of real value. The shiny, heavy platinum chain hanging off her bruised wrist mocked her impoverished state, gleaming brightly under the dim, flickering bulb dangling from the ceiling.
She zipped the cheap bag shut. A hollow, desolate emptiness nested deep inside her chest. She had spent her entire tragic childhood in this cursed house, desperately clinging to the fading memories of her deceased mother. Yet, leaving did not feel like a momentous victory. It felt like she was simply trading one bleak prison for an infinitely more dangerous dungeon.
She retrieved her satchel and slowly descended the narrow, creaking wooden stairs, entering the grand dining hall on the main floor. Her father and stepmother sat adjacent to each other at the long mahogany table, the rich smell of roasted meat and expensive wine filling the air. Chloe had already departed for her tropical honeymoon, leaving the cursed manor uncomfortably quiet.
Arthur Belmont did not bother to rise from his chair to bid his eldest daughter a proper farewell. He lazily swirled the amber bourbon liquid in his crystal glass, fixing her with a cold, detached stare that lacked any shred of paternal affection.
"You should behave yourself while being his wife. Obey his every whim. Do whatever he commands so you do not end up dead like his previous three wives. You should count yourself fortunate to receive pity from a man of his stature." Arthur instructed, his tone laced with chilling indifference.
Hazel pressed her trembling lips into a thin, pale line, suppressing the burning urge to scream at him. Pity? He had practically sold her off to a rumored monster just to keep his failing business ventures afloat.
Beatrice let out a dry, malicious chuckle, delicately slicing a piece of rare steak on her china plate.
"I was surprised when he announced that at the wedding. Try not to embarrass us, Hazel."
Hazel blinked back the hot, stinging tears gathering in the corners of her eyes. She plastered a pale, emotionless smile on her face, turned sharply on her worn heel, and walked out the heavy front doors without uttering a single goodbye.
A sleek, elongated black luxury vehicle idled just past the stone steps of the grand porch. A driver wearing a sharp, tailored suit stood silently by the rear passenger door, immediately pulling it open as soon as she approached. Hazel climbed into the plush, pristine leather seat, clutching her pathetic satchel tightly against her chest like a protective shield.
The tense drive took her far across the limits of town. The bustling, well-lit city streets eventually morphed into winding, isolated dirt roads lined with dense, towering ancient pines. The legendary Adler Estate resided deep within the secluded supernatural territories, entirely cut off from the prying eyes of human society and lower-ranking wolves. The black car smoothly breached a set of towering, monstrous wrought-iron gates, pulling up the long, curving cobblestone driveway illuminated by archaic gas lanterns.
Hazel gaped out the tinted window. Vane's sprawling, imposing villa stood aggressively against the dark, starlit skyline, a staggering beacon of modern architectural beauty fused seamlessly with raw, untamed wilderness. Massive, floor-to-ceiling glass windows offered intimidating glimpses into the illuminated, opulent interior.
The silent driver parked the car and guided her toward the towering front entrance. The heavy, carved wooden door swung open before she could even knock. A stoic doorman ushered her inside without a word.
Hazel crossed the heavy threshold with a racing pulse, the soles of her cheap canvas boots stepping onto imported, dark marble flooring. The grand living room stretched out vastly in front of her, reeking of exorbitant wealth, old cedar wood, and potent lycan musk.
Vane Silas Adler sat waiting in the harsh shadows. He rested on a black leather sofa placed in the dead center of the vast space. The Lycan king sat with his long, muscular legs crossed at the knee, lazily flipping the pages of a thick glossy magazine. The sheer magnitude of his wild presence sucked the oxygen straight out of the grand room.
He lifted his dark head. His intense, glowing emerald gaze snapped directly onto her fragile, trembling figure. He tossed the magazine carelessly onto the gleaming glass coffee table and pushed himself up to stand at his full, towering height.
As the beast of a man began closing the distance between them with slow, measured strides, Hazel's primal survival instincts engaged. She instinctively flinched backward, her boots scraping noisily against the polished stone floor. She clutched her worn satchel tighter against her chest, bracing herself for cruelty or rejection.
Vane halted a mere breath away from her face. He stared down at her trembling frame with an unreadable, hardened expression.
"Welcome to my house. But there are rules you have to abide by while living in my house and playing the role of a wife." He stated. His deep voice rang with a layer of absolute, terrifying dominance that left zero room for argument or rebellion.
Hazel squeezed her eyes shut for a fleeting, desperate second, forcing her chin upward to level her gaze with his broad chest. She swallowed the dry lump lodged in her throat and offered a stiff, submissive nod acknowledging his territory.
Vane pivoted slowly, walking toward the grand circular wooden staircase leading up toward the dark master quarters. He gripped the intricate wrought-iron railing, his knuckles stark against the dark metal. He paused right at the bottom foot of the stairs. He turned his heavy head back around, casting a dark, ominous look over his massive shoulder right into her soul.
"And most importantly, you are not allowed to leave this house without my permission. You are to stay indoors until I permit you. Especially at night."
