Fateful Encounter
Hazel’s Pov:
I remained sprawled on the cold floor, frozen in sheer terror after seeing the water splash violently across the dark stranger’s face. The heavy crystal glass rolled away with a mocking thud, coming to a halt against the mahogany leg of his armchair. Shards of un-melted ice scattered like broken diamonds across the intricate patterns of the oriental rug. A sharp gasp tore through my throat, catching instantly in my chest as I watched liquid drip methodically from his stern chin. The water soaked straight into his pristine, custom-tailored dark suit, saturating his lapels in an instant. My blood ran entirely cold. The physical pain radiating from my bruised knees was completely eclipsed by the suffocating panic seizing my mind. My body turned rigid, locking every joint into place. What had I just done?
The stranger did not flinch. He did not blink. The tall, well-built man standing beside the leather chair reacted in a flash. Dressed in a matching black suit and clutching a heavy dark briefcase, this personal bodyguard immediately stepped forward. He pulled a thick, impeccably folded handkerchief from his breast pocket and began frantically dabbing the moisture from his master’s face and ruined collar. His movements were swift, calculated, and born of absolute subservience.
"How more careless can you be?" My father hissed.
The vicious sound of Arthur Belmont’s voice shattered the suffocating silence of the parlor. His face contorted with a murderous rage that promised severe physical retribution the moment these guests left our home. The veins in his neck strained against his starched collar, his eyes flaring with unchecked anger. I flinched visibly. I avoided my father’s lethal glare and pressed my face downward, staring intensely at the polished floorboards. My pale reflection stared back at me beneath the warm glow of the overhead chandelier. My eyes looked dull, hollowed out by years of endless berating, and my cheeks burned with a flushed heat. The light in my face had ceased to exist the day my mother died, replaced only by a desperate need to survive this house.
From the edge of my peripheral vision, I caught movement on the settee. Chloe lounged comfortably against the plush cushions, her foot still slightly outstretched from where she had intentionally tripped me. She hid a smug, satisfied smirk behind her perfectly manicured hand, reveling in my utter humiliation.
"I'm sorry. I'm really sorry." I stammered frantically.
I gathered the spilled ice cubes with trembling fingers, my gaze firmly locked onto the rug. I did not dare meet the piercing eyes of the massive man I had just assaulted with a beverage. At this exact moment, I wished the floorboards would simply crack open and swallow me whole. The only small mercy the universe granted me today was that the crystal cup did not break. If it had shattered, I knew without a doubt that I would have been ordered to clean the jagged pieces of glass with my bare hands.
"Sorry? That's all you are good at saying." Chloe asserted.
Her venomous tone cut through the air. My gaze remained on the floor, but I could flawlessly visualize the stern, disdainful look forming across her spoiled features.
"Are you blind or something? Can't you watch your steps? Must you show how clumsy you are?" Chloe demanded.
She let out a sharp, dramatic sigh, shifting her weight on the sofa to cross her legs.
"A simple task given to you, you messed it up." She added.
"I'm so sorry... I'll fetch another glass right away, please forgive me." I apologized again, clutching the empty cup against my chest.
I shifted my focus to the formidable man sitting before me. The damage to his expensive attire was evident, and the sheer power rolling off him was dangerously affecting my senses. I kept my tense muscles coiled, half expecting a violent outburst from him. Men with this level of wealth and intimidating presence did not tolerate mistakes. My own family was prone to casual savagery over minor inconveniences. A stranger possessing such dominant energy would surely strike me down.
To my absolute shock, his faint emerald eyes remained completely flat and unreadable. He evaluated me with a sharp, impenetrable stare that pierced straight through my skin, yet his handsome face held no wrath. He remained perfectly composed in his half-drenched suit, a stone monument of restraint amidst the chaos of my family’s shouting.
"I'm really sorry Sir. It wasn't intentional." I whispered, lowering my chin in submission.
I waited for his brutal response, bracing for a curse or a threat, but he kept silent. His impassive expression did not change.
"I will get you another glass of water." I declared, using the edge of the coffee table to rise to my trembling feet.
"No need." The man commanded.
His deep, resonant baritone reverberated through the grand parlor with an innate authority that instantly arrested my frantic movements. It was the first time he had spoken since I walked into the room. His voice was calm like a deep ocean trench, yet laced with a dominating, undeniable power. Every single muscle in his broad frame radiated total, unshakeable strength, making our entire household seem incredibly frail by comparison. Just hearing the low timber of his voice sent a strange, grounding shiver straight down my spine. It quieted the panic in my mind.
"Let's cut to the chase on why I am here." The stranger firmly stated.
The bodyguard immediately stepped back, folding the damp cloth away and returning to his statuesque posture by the armrest. Arthur Belmont’s murderous glare vanished, instantly replaced by a fawning, nervous smile. My father rubbed his hands together, his demeanor transforming into that of an obedient servant trying to please a volatile king.
"Sure." My father nodded eagerly.
I stood paralyzed near the edge of the rug, clutching the serving tray against my waist, waiting to be formally ordered to stay or leave the premises.
"You can leave. When I want you, I will request for you." My father barked, offering me a sharp dismissive wave without looking in my direction.
I nodded quickly and retreated toward the heavy oak doors, stepping out into the polished corridor. I should have hurried straight to the safety of the kitchen, but an inexplicable compulsion dragged my feet to a sudden halt. A strange force urged me to stay. I pressed my back against the wall directly behind the parlor partition. By leaning forward just a fraction, I could peek through the shadow of the doorframe and observe the men gathered around the center table.
The stranger did not waste time with pleasantries.
"So I'm here to finalize the deal between us. The land in Alaska, it's time to give it up." He demanded.
The bodyguard moved methodically. He snapped the latches of the leather briefcase open, fetched out a thick stack of legal documents, and slammed them onto the glass table directly in front of my father. A heavy, suffocating silence settled over the parlor. Arthur Belmont let out a troubled, nervous chuckle. A deep pale look etched across his face as he stared at the papers, rubbing his chin in profound distress.
"I know I was the one who signed these documents, but can we change the bargain?" My father suggested.
The dark stranger slowly shook his head, his emerald eyes pinning my father in place.
"A bargain is a bargain. I have come to let you know it is time to finish your part of the bargain." The man replied with quiet lethality.
"Mr. Vane Silas Adler, please listen to me." My father pleaded, his voice cracking slightly.
The air left my lungs in a violent rush. My hands squeezed the edges of the metal serving tray until my knuckles turned stark white. Vane Silas Adler. I had just dumped a glass of ice water directly onto the face of Vane Silas Adler himself. My insides trembled with a renewed wave of terror. His reputation within the werewolf community was steeped in blood, violence, and merciless conquests. He was the feared brute of the endless rumors, a Lycan King capable of destroying entire bloodlines in a single evening. Yet, peering through the slight opening of the doorway, his composed, chilling restraint stood in stark, ironic contrast to the monstrous beast described in the gossip columns. He was collected. He was calm.
Desperate to keep the Alaskan property from slipping out of his hands, Arthur Belmont squirmed in his seat. I knew that specific territory was the last jewel of the Belmont ancestral estate, and losing it meant admitting complete financial failure.
"I can give you something else in exchange for that." My father desperately offered.
Vane leaned back into the leather armchair, unbothered by the pathetic display of begging.
"I have no desire in any other thing other than the land you mortgaged to me. Nothing can be of utmost importance than the land." Vane firmly clarified.
"Mr. Vane Silas Adler, you aren't married again, are you?" My father asked.
Vane’s jaw tightened with dangerous irritation at the obvious, stalling question. One thick, dark eyebrow rose in a challenging query as he analyzed the desperate man sitting across from him.
"Where is that question coming from, and what does it have to do with the land you indebted to me if you couldn't fulfill your part of the bargain?" Vane shot back, his voice dropping an octave as his eyes bored into my father.
My father ignored the lethal warning woven into the Lycan’s tone.
"You are a fine promising young man and it isn't good for a man to be alone. You need someone." My father countered, flashing a sickeningly sweet smile.
"I'm not complaining. And why are you suddenly interested in my personal life? We don't share such a close relationship to meddle in my private life." Vane replied coldly.
"I know, but this gift I'm about to give is much better than the land in Alaska. Plus, that land is the heirloom my father left behind." My father pushed.
"I do not care if it is a heirloom or not. I'm here to take what's rightfully mine. I just need your signatures on the documents to finalize the deal." Vane stated.
"I'm sorry but I can't do that." My father shifted uncomfortably, sweat beading across his brow.
"I'm afraid I have to take legal action against you then. An agreement should be completed by both parties." Vane leaned forward, the terrifying weight of his aura returning in full force. "If you knew you weren't prepared to keep your part of the deal, you wouldn't have mortgaged it in the first place."
The threat of immediate legal action hung in the air. If Vane Silas Adler took the Belmont estate to court, we would be bankrupt by sunrise. My father gripped the armrests of his chair, realizing he was entirely cornered.
"I had no choice. I was in a tight spot and I did what I thought was the best." My father snapped in deep frustration.
"Then keep your word. Or I take legal action against you because that would be breaching the contract between us." Vane uttered without a shred of sympathy.
"The more reason I offered something in place of the land." My father declared.
Vane’s eyes narrowed into dangerous slits.
"What could be better than the land in Alaska?" Vane challenged.
My father played his final, sickening trump card to avoid financial ruin. A broad, manic smile lit up his face, replacing the pale worry from moments before.
"My daughter." Arthur Belmont announced.
My stomach plummeted into a dark, bottomless abyss. A cold sweat broke out across the back of my neck.
Vane’s emerald eyes shot up in genuine surprise. It was the first crack in his stone-cold facade, clearly caught entirely off guard by the shameless proposition.
"Your daughter?" Vane lifted a brow, an unreadable storm brewing in his gaze.
"Yes. My first daughter. I can give my daughter to you instead." My father nodded rapidly, beaming with pride over his disgusting barter.
"Are you perhaps giving out your daughter to me, like an exchange for the land?" Vane asked slowly, measuring the pure depravity of the man before him.
My father let out a loud, grating laugh, attempting to disguise the reality of his transaction.
"Of course not! But I also figured out you are single and it would be bad if you have no woman in your life. And my daughter is the best candidate. Hazel!" My father called out loudly.
My legs felt like bricks of lead, but years of brutal conditioning forced my body to comply. I abandoned the safety of the shadows in the corridor and stepped back into the tense center of the parlor. I moved directly to my father’s side, forcing my trembling lips into a painfully awkward, obedient smile. Inside, my spirit was shattering into pieces. I was being traded like livestock to clear a failed balance sheet.
"She's mateless and you are without any mate as well. You two will make a fine couple, don't you think? She's better than that piece of land." My father boasted.
I swallowed hard, barely able to draw breath as Vane’s heavy gaze locked onto my face. The majestic Lycan sat perfectly still in the leather chair, letting his assessing eyes travel slowly over my meager, unadorned frame. He inspected the cheap fabric of my dress, my slightly scuffed shoes, and the sheer, vibrating terror written across my posture. The silence stretched in heavy, terrifying calculation. I felt stripped bare, placed onto a butcher’s block waiting for the executioner to render a decision.
Finally, Vane delivered his cold verdict.
"I'm not interested in any of your daughters. I only want that land." Vane firmly rejected.
His voice was decisively low and final. The stinging humiliation pierced straight through my ribcage. Being offered up as a bartered object was a sickening violation, but being meticulously inspected and immediately discarded somehow cut vastly deeper. Once again, I was entirely unwanted. The misery skyrocketed through my veins, rooting my numb feet right to the rug.
Vane rose smoothly from the armchair, adjusting his soaked tie as his sheer size dominated the room once more. He pulled his piercing gaze from me, dismissing my existence entirely, and fixed his lethal glare squarely onto my father.
"I give you two days to make up your mind before I take legal action against you." Vane warned.
He turned on his heel to leave. The massive bodyguard quickly snatched the legal documents off the glass table, snapping the briefcase shut as he followed closely behind his master. Just before Vane crossed the parlor threshold to step into the grand foyer, his polished boots came to a sudden halt. He stood tall in the doorway, slowly rotating his head to glance over his broad shoulder. His emerald gaze drifted deliberately past my frozen frame, landing precisely at the base of the corner sofa. He stared at the exact spot on the wooden floorboards where my sister had viciously tripped me minutes prior.
"Oh, I also noticed there was a vulgar ring at the end of that corner." Vane stated.
His voice dripped with icy mockery, slicing effortlessly through the suffocating tension of the room.
"No matter who it belonged to, the owner’s taste must be very poor." Vane added.
With that final parting insult, Vane Silas Adler strode confidently out of the manor, leaving absolute silence in his wake. I dared to glance toward the settee. Resting against the floorboards was the massive, gaudy diamond engagement ring Chloe had been flaunting relentlessly all morning. It must have slipped off her finger during her malicious attack. A spark of dark satisfaction ignited in my chest as I watched Chloe’s jaw drop open. Her face burned a violent, unhinged scarlet red with pure rage.
