The Stolen Spotlight and Silent Cheers
SIENNA'S POV
Ronan placed his hand against the heavy double doors and shoved them open. The rush of wind swept us straight into the grand ballroom. The thumping bass of the party vibrated through the soles of my heels, syncing with the hammering of my heart. I tightened my grip on his palm, drawing strength from his steady presence.
The pop track stuttered and died out. A suffocating silence smothered the hall. Dozens of drunk students froze. Red cups paused halfway to open mouths. Dancing bodies went rigid. Every single eye in the sprawling room locked onto the sight of Ronan Adler standing tall beside me. Our hands intertwined for the world to see.
The scent of vanilla and spun sugar masked the sharp smell of cheap alcohol. Kiera's towering birthday cake sat near the far wall. I had spent countless sleepless nights organizing every detail of that layered monstrosity. The venue sparkled under a canopy of twinkling fairy lights. Pink and silver balloons bobbed near the vaulted ceiling. None of it mattered anymore. We had hijacked the space before we even took a full step inside.
I felt the weight of a hundred stares dragging down my bare shoulders. The prickle of relentless whispers danced along my exposed skin. Incredulous murmurs flared among the frozen crowd. The silent spell broke, replaced by a wave of electric gossip. The untouchable campus playboy, a guy who never took dates anywhere, was escorting me into the biggest social event of the semester.
"Do you know who she is?" a guy muttered near the coat rack.
A girl with bright pink hair lifted her phone. The camera flash blinded me for a split second. "I think this is the first time I've ever seen Ro with a girl in public. Oh, Trixie is going to be furious."
"That’s Kiera's sister. The quiet one."
"Didn’t Kiera used to be obsessed with Ronan? I swear it's the whole reason she settled for Declan."
The gossip cut through the static noise filling my head. I shifted my focus toward the raised velvet podium at the center of the dance floor. Kiera perched on her decorated throne, reigning over the party in a sparkling designer dress. Her perfect curls cascaded down her back. Right now, her perfect illusion was cracking. The crystal champagne flute in her grip hung suspended in midair. Her shiny, painted mouth parted in sheer disbelief.
Declan stood rigid right beside her in his dark tuxedo. The polished image vanished the second my eyes met his. The tension rolling off his frame was palpable. His hands formed tight, white-knuckled fists at his sides. His jaw clenched with such brutal force the veins in his neck popped against his white shirt collar. Accusation and a bitter, dark fury swirled in his glare. His eyes tracked my hand held safe in Ronan's grasp. The fierce, jealous reaction sent a wicked thrill down my spine.
Before I could savor the shock painting their features, a shadow darted into my path. Myra swooped in like a vulture. Her sharp manicured claws bit painfully into my forearm. I bit the inside of my cheek to stop a wince.
"Sienna, what on earth are you doing here? This is not the time or the place to make a scene." She hissed the words through a terrifying smile. Her frantic eyes darted back and forth between us and the gawking attendees.
She used her body weight, trying to wedge a gap between Ronan and me. I pulled gracefully away from her suffocating grip. The silk of my couture dress flowed back into place against my legs.
"It's my sister's birthday. I'm here to celebrate, not cause a scene. If anything, your panic is the only thing causing a scene. We don't want that. Do we? This is Kiera's special day." I kept my tone deadpan, flashing a serene smile.
Myra narrowed her eyes, opening her mouth to spit another reprimand. I ignored her. A stunned waiter lingered near the edge of our circle, balancing a catering tray. I reached out and plucked a flute of champagne from the arrangement. I locked eyes with my petrified sister across the crowded room.
I raised the glass high above my head into the thick silence.
"To the birthday girl. May all your wishes come true." My voice rang loud and clear through the hush.
The champagne fizzed sharp and sweet on my tongue as I took a steady drink. The room exhaled at once. The nervous murmurs of the crowd rose into a chaotic wave of noise.
"With that boy by your side? We will discuss this when we get home." Myra tossed the threat at my face.
She spun on her heel, scurrying away to manage the optics and herd students away from the cake.
The scent of rich leather and sharp masculine cologne washed over my senses. Ronan circled behind me. His large hand rested warm and solid against the small of my back. The steady, burning pressure anchored my racing heart in an instant.
"She looks proper mad." His rich voice dipped down to my ear.
"Dance with me." He murmured the command, his fingers trailing down my spine as he pulled me toward the center floor.
The DJ scrambled to fix the mood. A slow, heavy beat rattled the floorboards. The students parted ways, leaving a wide circle on the polished wood. I turned to face him. I wrapped my arms around his neck, letting my fingers tangle in the soft hair at his nape. I leaned my full weight against the hard plane of his chest. For once, I was not the girl left behind in the shadows.
"Thank you. I didn't think being messy could be so refreshing." I whispered the confession against his collar, melting into his rhythm.

KIERA'S POV
The evening I had meticulously staged was obliterated the second the heavy entrance doors swung wide open. The DJ's booming track screeched to a sudden halt. The scent of vanilla and spun sugar from my massive birthday cake clashed with the sweat and perfumes of my friends. I had spent countless hours planning this night from start to finish. I perfected the velvet decorations. I chose the exact shade of the glittering fairy lights. I curated the guest list to ensure only elite students got past the bouncers. Everything was flawless. I was the center of the universe.
Then she walked in.
Sienna.
My dull, plain, pathetic stepsister stepped into the ballroom like she owned the building. I had always treated her like dirt beneath my expensive shoes. She was supposed to be at home, crying over her ruined relationship. Instead, she stood under the bright entrance lights wearing a stunning couture silk dress that hugged every single curve of her body. Worse than the dress was the man standing flush against her side. Ronan Adler guided her over the threshold as if she were a precious gem.
The sea of drunken guests parted in dead silence.
I stood frozen on the raised velvet podium. My fingers gripped the edge of my luxury seat tight enough to snap my manicured acrylic nails. My shimmering designer dress felt like cheap trash compared to the effortless elegance glowing off Sienna. Shock slackened my painted features. I felt my mouth hanging open in a pathetic show of disbelief. I could not tear my gaze away from his hand locked tight around hers.
"Do you know who she is?" a girl whispered in the front row.
Chloe held up her phone, snapping a blurry picture of the dramatic entrance. "Look at her dress. Isn’t that Taller Momo?"
"Probably a knock-off piece of garbage." I spat the words, my throat tight with bitter venom.
"That doesn't look fake to—"
I leveled a lethal glare at Chloe, forcing her to swallow the rest of the sentence. I did not want to hear anyone praise the brat.
Beside me, Declan vibrated with a rage I could not comprehend. I turned my head to look at my supposed boyfriend. His hands formed tight, white-knuckled fists at his sides. The expensive fabric of his dark tuxedo stretched over the massive tension rolling through his broad shoulders. His dark eyes tracked Sienna’s every movement. An obsessive, jealous fury burned in his stare, making my blood boil in my veins.
He wasn't angry she crashed my party. He was angry she walked in holding hands with another man.
"Take a picture, Declan, it will last fucking longer." I snarled the taunt, shoving my shoulder against his arm in a desperate attempt to snap him out of his trance.
Declan blinked, forcing his intense gaze down to the floorboards. "I just don't know what she is doing with Ro."
"She probably blew his cock to get him to do this shit. It's obviously her pathetic attempt to feel better about herself." I crossed my arms over my chest, digging my sharp nails into my own flesh.
"Ro isn't like that. Sure, he is a sexual person. But he does believe in true..." Declan let his voice trail off.
He sprang to the asshole's defense. The fact that Declan refused to attack Ronan over my honor ignited a fresh burst of panic in my chest. He was too busy feeling betrayed by Sienna to care about my ruined birthday.
"In true what?" I demanded the answer.
Before Declan could open his stubborn mouth, my mother materialised near the entrance. She grabbed Sienna's arm in a frantic bid to stop the social disaster. I watched the cringe-inducing interaction play out from afar. My mother’s attempts to salvage the night were weak. Sienna looked untouchable, brushing her off with unnatural grace.
"This is embarrassing." I whispered the truth, dropping my heavy head into my hands.
Chloe shoved an illuminated phone screen directly into my line of sight.
"Guess what?" Chloe asked, her voice tinged with a nauseating mix of extreme excitement and disbelief.
"What exactly am I supposed to be looking at?" I slapped her wrist, pushing the bright screen away from my face.
"Look at his following list."
I snatched the device from her grip and narrowed my eyes at the glowing screen. She had pulled up Ronan Adler’s notorious Instagram account. Everyone on campus knew he kept his page locked down tight. His following list was incredibly exclusive. He never followed anyone, not even his close fraternity brothers. He liked to maintain an aura of mystery.
My heart skipped a beat, then slammed a frantic rhythm against my ribs. A single new addition sat at the very top of his clean following list.
Sienna Vance.
I tapped on the profile picture. The screen shifted to Sienna’s mundane page, full of casual selfies and boring nature shots. My mind raced in a terrifying loop. Ronan had rejected my advances for two straight semesters. I had thrown myself at him, invited him to VIP lounges, and sent him explicit messages, only to be hit with cold, unyielding indifference. Yet here he was, following my pathetic stepsister on social media, treating her like prized gold in front of the entire Greek letter society.
My panic reached a fever pitch. The once-lively party atmosphere transformed into a suffocating cage. I looked back up toward the entrance. Sienna broke away from my mother’s frantic reprimand. She snagged a crystal flute of champagne from a passing waiter and turned her posture in my direction.
A mocking, serene smile spread across her face. She raised the sparkling glass high in the air, offering a fake, dramatic toast across the stretch of the stunned room.
"To the birthday girl. May all your wishes come true." Her voice carried over the dead silence, echoing off the high ceiling.
Blistering heat flooded my cheeks. A toxic mix of deep humiliation and raw anger burned the back of my throat. I dug my acrylic nails into my palms until I felt the sharp sting of breaking skin. Drops of warm blood seeped into the creases of my hands. She had stolen my perfect moment. She had turned the most important night of my life into her personal revenge tour.
I watched Ronan step up behind her. He placed a large, protective hand on her lower back. He led her onto the center of the dance floor. The DJ flipped a switch. The music resumed. They melted into a slow dance, looking like a flawless power couple on the cover of a fashion magazine. Her arms wrapped around his neck. His hands rested on her waist.
I dragged a ragged breath into my burning lungs. My chest heaved with the force of my hatred. This night was far from over. I was thrust into the shadows, but I swore to drag Sienna right back down into the mud with me before the sun came up. I would destroy her.
