Shattered Perfume and Cold Ultimatum
SIENNA'S POV
The deafening roar of the crowd still shook the cold concrete beneath my feet. I hurried down the stadium’s dimly lit locker room hallway, my heart racing with a mix of exhaustion from running and sheer, unfiltered excitement. A chill hung in the subterranean air, smelling faintly of stale beer, damp turf, and medicinal sports rub. I clutched a silver-wrapped box tightly against my chest. Inside sat a heavy, elegant bottle of designer perfume I had saved up for months to buy. It was a gift for my younger sister Kiera’s nineteenth birthday tomorrow. I had practically memorized the floral notes of jasmine and sandalwood when I picked it out, knowing it was an exact match for her expensive tastes.
Right now, though, my focus was on Declan.
His rugby squad had just secured a grueling championship victory. I had watched from the chaotic stands as he pushed his body to the limit, supporting his team captain to break the final defensive line. The victory was a massive milestone. I could not wait to wrap my arms around him. Navigating through the post-game chaos of shouting teammates, rowdy fans, and scrambling staff was like swimming upstream, but my chest just swelled with pride. My boyfriend was a champion tonight.
I turned the final corner toward the private annex, expecting to find him packing up his gear or celebrating with the remaining stragglers.
Instead, my footsteps faltered. My anticipation dissolved into pure horror.
Declan was standing by the gray metal lockers. He was not alone. Kiera was there. My little sister stood pressed into his space, her golden hair catching the harsh fluorescent lights of the corridor. Both of Declan’s hands rested intimately on her waist. His fingers were gripping the fabric of her designer jacket in a way that made my stomach pitch.
"Hey, what if someone sees?" Declan whispered, his voice laced with a nervous, panicked edge.
Kiera did not pull away. She tilted her chin up, a cruel smirk playing on her lips.
"Who? That runt that calls herself my sister?" Kiera’s voice dripped with callous spite, lacking even a fraction of hesitation or guilt.
My paralyzed mind misfired. I tried to command my jaw to open, to scream, to ask what the hell was going on, but my throat locked up. Before I could intervene, Declan ducked his head.
He pulled her into a deep, desperate kiss.
His mouth moved over hers with an urgent hunger, his hands sliding further up her back to pull her closer.
The silver-wrapped box slipped from my numb fingers.
The heavy glass hit the concrete floor with a violent crash. The sound echoed down the hallway like a gunshot. Shards of thick glass exploded outward, skittering across the floor and spraying a heavy cloud of floral notes over my shoes. Out of nowhere, the sweet scent turned cloying and nauseating.
Declan tore his mouth away from Kiera in sheer panic. His head snapped toward the noise, his face blanching white as a sheet the second his eyes locked onto mine.
"Sienna?" Declan gasped. His arms dropped from Kiera’s waist. "Oh god, Sienna. I can explain."
I stood frozen. The air in my lungs turned to ash.
"Explain? You want to explain how you are kissing my sister?" I finally forced the words out, tasting bile at the back of my throat.
Kiera merely adjusted her clothes with smirking indifference, her gaze flicking down to the shattered remains of her birthday gift on the floor.
"Oh, calm down, Sienna. You are making a scene," Kiera said, rolling her eyes.
"A scene? You think I am making a scene?" I let out a harsh, broken laugh. My chest felt tight, the invisible pressure threatening to crack my ribs. "Right. How silly of me to be upset about finding my boyfriend shoving his tongue down my sister's throat in a dirty locker room hallway."
Kiera took a step forward, her chin raised in blatant defiance.
"There is more. Tell her, Declan," Kiera commanded, her tone sharp and unyielding.
Declan shook his head frantically. He took a stumbling step toward me, holding his hands out as if trying to placate a wild animal.
"Kiera, don't," Declan begged, his voice cracking with desperation.
"I'm pregnant. It's Declan's child," Kiera announced boldly, her voice echoing off the metal lockers.
The concrete floor seemed to vanish from beneath my feet. A wave of dizziness crashed over me. I staggered backward, my heel crunching over a stray shard of perfume glass. Pregnant. Kiera was pregnant with my boyfriend's baby. While I was cheering for him in the stands, they were laughing at me.
"What?" I choked out, wrapping my arms around my own stomach.
"Sienna, please. I didn't know," Declan pleaded. He reached for my forearm, his fingers brushing my sleeve.
I yanked my arm back with a fierce jerk.
"Don't touch me. Just stay away from me," I hissed. Choking on the cloying scent of my destroyed gift, I knew I could not breathe in this hallway for one second longer.
"We are done. I am severing ties with both of you. Right here. Right now." I spat the words with every ounce of poison I could gather, refusing to let them see me cry.
I turned on my heel and fled.
I burst through the heavy exit doors and slammed right into the freezing rain. The icy downpour soaked through my jacket in seconds, but it did nothing to cool the burning agony tearing through my chest. I rushed to the bus stop, my vision blurring as the tears finally spilled over, mixing with the heavy rain.
I sat on the city bus with my wet hair plastered to my cheeks, watching the blurry streetlights smear across the rain-streaked window. The ride felt agonizing.
When I finally reached the front porch of our foster home, I stood in the dark for a moment, letting the freezing rain numb my skin. Taking a deep breath, I turned the key and pushed the wooden door open.
"Sienna? Is that you?" Myra’s commanding voice rang out from the adjacent kitchen before I could even take my wet shoes off.
Our foster mother walked into the grand entryway. She stopped dead in her tracks, her manicured eyebrows shooting upward as she took in my drenched, shivering form.
"Good Lord, what happened to you? You look dreadful," Myra sighed, crossing her arms over her silk blouse. She did not ask if I was okay.
I just stared at her, my jaw clamped shut so tight my teeth ached.
"Well, you had better fix yourself up before Kiera gets home. Tomorrow is her big birthday celebration, and we cannot have you looking like this for the party," Myra chided, turning her back on me to fix an ornament on the hall table.
The front door opened behind me.
I spun around. Kiera stepped through the doorway, shaking the rain from her umbrella. Declan trailed in a few steps behind her, looking miserable and soaked.
"Sienna," Declan said, his voice low. "Please, can we just talk?"
The remaining threads of my self-control snapped.
"Get out!" I screamed, lunging toward him and shoving his chest hard enough to make him stumble against the doorframe. "Get the hell out of this house!"
Myra spun around, her face twisting with shrill alarm.
"What on earth is going on in my house?" Myra demanded, marching toward the ensuing chaos.
I whirled to face Kiera. "You want to know what is going on, Myra? Why don't you ask your precious Kiera? Go on, Kiera. Tell your mother everything!"
Kiera’s confident, triumphant smirk from the locker room had vanished. She stood glued to the spot.
"Sienna, don't," Kiera hissed.
"No! You made your choice. Now deal with the consequences!" I shouted in her face.
Myra looked back and forth between us, her lips pressed into a thin line of furious confusion.
"Will someone please explain what is happening?" Myra ordered, glaring at Kiera.
I maintained unbroken eye contact with my sister, my tone dropping into a venomous calm. "Go ahead. Tell her how you have been sleeping with my boyfriend. Tell her you are carrying his child. Tell her how you destroyed everything."
The immense silence that followed was deafening. The only sound was the heavy rain lashing against the windows.
Myra stiffened, her gaze locking onto her biological daughter. "Kiera, what is Sienna talking about?"
"Mama, I love Declan," Kiera stammered.
A resounding, vicious crack echoed through the foyer.
Myra had closed the distance in a split second, bringing her hand across Kiera’s cheek with a forceful backhand. The strike snapped Kiera’s head to the side, leaving a vivid red mark blooming on her pale skin.
I flinched, my breath hitching in my chest. I thought Myra was defending me. I thought my foster mother was punishing Kiera for breaking my heart.
"You stupid, reckless fool!" Myra shrieked, her eyes wild with absolute fury. "Do you understand the repercussions of what you have done? You are practically betrothed to Gael Mercer! You have just compromised an arranged marriage that is vital to this family! An alliance with the Mercer family is paramount, and you knew it!"
Myra was not comforting my shattered heart. She was panicking over a ruined business deal.
Myra took a deep breath, smoothing her own hair before turning a rigid glare onto Declan.
"And you, leave this house. I never want to see you around my daughter anymore," Myra stated with freezing authority.
Declan looked at me one last time before he turned and disappeared into the rainy street, shutting the door heavily behind him.
I stood near the staircase, feeling like a ghost. My own foster mother had just treated my tragedy as an inconvenience.
"I have to get out of here," I murmured, turning to grab the door handle.
"Hold on, you cannot leave just yet," Myra intercepted me, stepping into my path with a predator-like gaze assessing my features. "We are far from done. You heard your sister. She is pregnant with that idiot's child."
Myra paced in a tight circle. "I promised a daughter to the Mercers. It took me sacrifices to make it happen. Now that Kiera has ruined her prospects, it is up to you to uphold our family's honor. The Mercers will be visiting in a few days. You will take Kiera's place."
I halted. My brain struggled to process the sheer audacity of her demand. Kiera had slept with my boyfriend. Kiera had gotten herself pregnant out of wedlock despite knowing the grand plans Myra had made. Yet I was the one expected to step up?
"Why should I do that?" I asked against the silence.
Myra seemed stunned by my fierce defiance.
"Why should you? Sienna, I took you in as my own when you were an orphaned little girl. Have you forgotten your roots so easily? Is this how you repay me for raising you?" Myra spoke with a sharp edge designed to ignite my guilt.
I dug my fingernails into my palms. The prospect of an arranged marriage was a permanent prison sentence.
"I am not marrying a stranger, Myra. Especially when the only reason is to clean up my sister's reckless mess," I stated, staring her down.
Myra stepped forward, unhinged rage burning in her eyes. Her palm struck my cheek with blinding force. The smack echoed loudly over the rain outside. My skin throbbed with intense heat. Tears welled up in my eyes, but I refused to let them fall. I held my hand against my burning cheek and squared my shoulders.
"Silence, you ungrateful brat!" Myra yelled, her face contorting. "You have nothing without my guidance! Refusing me is not an option for you!"
"I am grateful for the shelter you provided after I lost my parents," I shot back, mustering every scrap of courage I possessed. "But that does not give you the right to control my life! I will not be pawned off to some stranger as a solution to Kiera’s mistakes!"
"Don't you dare walk out on me! We are not done!" Myra screamed.
I grabbed the heavy door handle and pulled it open. Refusing to surrender my autonomy to this toxic trap, I stepped back out into the freezing night and slammed the heavy door shut right on her frantic screams.
The rain had slowed to a pathetic drizzle by the time I pushed through the heavy iron door of a dim, gritty downtown bar. It smelled heavily of liquor and stale smoke. It was the perfect refuge.
I slumped onto a high wooden stool at the far corner of the counter. My wet clothes stuck to my skin. I signaled the bartender and ordered a sweet cocktail, needing the sugary syrup to wash away the bitter taste in my mouth.
When the bright pink drink was set down in front of me, I grabbed the glass and downed half of it in one gulp.
"It's a cocktail, not whiskey. If you want to get drunk, order something harder."
A deep, mocking chuckle accompanied the voice from the stool beside me. It cut through the low hum of the bar chatter.
I dragged my gaze up from my glass and met a pair of piercing, insolent eyes.
Ronan Adler.
He was sitting casually, draped in a worn leather jacket that stretched tight across his broad shoulders. Everyone on campus knew who he was. The notorious fly-half and captain of the rugby squad. The bad boy who left a trail of broken hearts in his wake. Tattoos peeked out from beneath the pushed-up sleeves of his shirt, hinting at untold stories. His magnetic face was carved into a smirk of pure mischief.
Looking at him sitting there, carrying the confident swagger of a campus playboy who made his own rules, a sudden spark of reckless defiance ignited in my chest. If I needed a weapon to derail Myra's arranged marriage plan, this dangerous rebel was the perfect catalyst.
I turned my body toward his, meeting his intense gaze without blinking.
"Whiskey sounds nice, Ronan Adler," I challenged. "Care to buy me a shot?"
