Beneath the Surface
A bold conjecture flashed through Declan’s analytical mind. He stormed toward the open window, his hands gripping the frame as he leaned out over the dizzying vertical drop.
He expected to find a broken body on the concrete. Instead, his sharp, predatory eyes caught a ripple in the shimmering blue waters of the hotel's outdoor pool directly below. A slender, athletic woman kicked through the dense water with shocking grace. Her lithe movements were wholly incompatible with the physics of a mentally disabled person. She forcefully pulled her dripping, agile body out of the pool and gripped the metal safety railing. A sudden, terrifying instinct caused her to freeze in place. Very slowly, she glanced over her slender shoulder.
She stared up the colossal height of the building and looked directly into Declan’s waiting, hawkish stare.
Their gazes locked across the vast distance. The psychological collision proved catastrophic for Declan. Beneath the glaring afternoon sun, the woman's face was laid bare, wiped clean of the heavy makeup and fake dirt that usually masked it. Her devastatingly beautiful features radiated a pure, innocent aura that fiercely contradicted her lethal escape maneuver. In a moment of paralyzing, breathless shock, those exact facial features overlapped with a deeply guarded, agonizing memory engraved in the very core of his soul.
His throat constricted. "Val."
Unable to curb the hurricane of racing emotions and adrenaline, Declan ripped himself away from the window frame. "Sweep the grounds! Move!" he barked at his stunned men.
He sprinted out of the suite, physically tearing through the winding hotel corridors and taking the stairs to reach the ground floor. However, by the time he burst through the poolside glass doors, the wet footprints had already vanished on the hot concrete. The woman was inexplicably gone.
A thick vein throbbed in Declan’s temple. "Initiate a militant lockdown of the entire hotel property. Nobody leaves." he commanded a hyperventilating Callum in a dark, merciless tone.
Despite his elite security forces scouring every inch of the premises, the search ended in absolute failure. The unbearable, suffocating silence was eventually shattered by a frantic phone call. A terrified servant back at the Thorne mansion reported that Mrs. Thorne had been successfully located on the estate grounds.
Declan’s expression froze over into a mask of pure, lethal ice. "Maintain a suffocating visual hold on her until I return."
Acknowledging a silent, deeply ominous order from his boss, Callum stayed behind to forcibly extract and analyze all surrounding security camera data. Declan pivoted and left the hotel in a blind fury.
A grueling half-hour later, the tense atmosphere shifted to the Thorne living room.
Declan sat heavily on the luxury couch. His intense, interrogator’s gaze remained fixed on a pouting, dour-faced Valerie who stubbornly sat directly on the polished hardwood floor.
"The staff are all a bunch of idiots! The game is utterly boring and not fun at all!" Valerie groused furiously, employing her trademark, high-pitched, child-like voice. Her wide eyes were bright and innocent, reflecting zero knowledge of the city-wide manhunt or the relentless hotel chaos.
Refusing to address her directly, Declan casually shifted his icy gaze to an exhausted Arthur. "Where exactly did you extract her from?"
Arthur buckled under the crushing guilt of his previous failure. "She was found curled up deeply inside the old annex building, Mr. Thorne. It is a dilapidated structure currently serving as a massive, cluttered storeroom."
Declan absorbed this crucial intel without offering a single word of commentary. He slowly turned his cold, hyper-assessing glare back to Valerie's petite form. He intensely catalogued her current physical state. A thick, convincing layer of gray dust and dry cobwebs coated her messy hair, her delicate face, her crumpled clothes, and her shoes. His mind simulated the layout of the three-story annex. It was an isolated area abandoned for years, rarely monitored by any human staff, and crucially, surrounded entirely by the estate's few remaining camera blind spots.
As his stare drilled holes into her dusty facade, a dangerous, paranoid thought looped in his head.
*What if she genuinely escaped the estate completely undetected from that exact blind spot?*
