Fooling the Lens
"Hide and seek! Let's play hide and seek!" Valerie shrieked, swirling the oversized lollipop in her mouth.
Blinding sunlight bathed the lavish courtyard of the Thorne residence. Valerie executed an exhausting performance of child-like exuberance, bounding over pristine flowerbeds and dodging manicured hedges. Trailing behind her, a small entourage of maids and butlers looked ready to collapse from the physical toll of her games. Sweat stained the collars of their uniforms as they wheezed for breath.
Capitalizing on their distraction, Valerie pivoted on her heel and sprinted toward the towering, wrought-iron front gates.
"Come catch me!" she screamed.
Her escape found a brick wall. Two muscled bodyguards stepped out from the shadows, effectively sealing the exit.
The guard crossed his thick arms over a dark suit, his tone flat and robotic. "Mrs. Thorne, you are forbidden from crossing this threshold."
Valerie summoned her tears on demand. Pouting with intense prejudice, she pointed a trembling finger at their chests. "You are just big, mean bullies!"
The two men remained statues carved from stone, unmoved by her display. Playing the crying fool required minimal effort for her. Beneath the surface, however, Valerie possessed sharp lucidity. Agitation bubbled in her chest. Ever since the disaster at the birthday gala, Declan’s suspicions had hit a fever pitch. He had saturated the estate with elite security personnel and sleek, high-tech dome cameras to track her every move.
She perceived the invasive surveillance as a direct challenge. A sneer formed in her mind as she mocked Declan. He was delusional if he thought these cheap tricks could expose a master like her.
Rubbing her eyes in a grand show of misery, she turned her back on them. "I do not want to play anymore!"
She stomped onto the paved path. Approaching a stone pillar equipped with a new dome camera, she performed an exaggerated motion of wiping away her crocodile tears. In the span of a single breath, the frantic flailing ceased. She paused. Tilting her chin toward the sky, she locked her sight onto the black lens.
The vacant stupidity evaporated from her posture. A razor-sharp, lethal glare ripped through the camera—a predator stalking its prey. The raw intensity lingered for a fraction of a second before she dropped her shoulders and snapped the childish facade back into place.
Miles away, inside the sleek suite of the Thorne Corporation’s CEO office, Callum Mercer jolted in his armchair.
Declan’s assistant gripped the edges of his tablet, exhausted from monitoring the live feed of the estate. When Valerie’s icy stare pierced the screen, he blinked in pure shock at the terrifying metamorphosis. Leaning forward, he squinted at the high-definition display. Valerie was already back to whimpering on the lawn and picking aimlessly at the grass.
Callum had been forced to watch her mindless antics for three agonizing days straight. Scrubbing a palm down his face, he dismissed the flash of lethal intelligence as a hallucination brought on by severe screen fatigue.
Declan caught the flinch out of the corner of his eye. He looked up from a stack of quarterly financial reports, his voice demanding. "What just happened?"
Callum stammered, hesitant to sound crazy in front of his boss. "Nothing. It is just Mrs. Thorne on the feed."
Paranoia flared in Declan's chest. He slammed his silver pen onto the solid mahogany desk and extended an open palm. "Give me the tablet."
Callum handed the device over without a word. Declan scrutinized the glossy screen, sliding his thumb to rewind the footage. He watched the mundane display of her temper tantrum outside the gates. Finding nothing out of the ordinary, he tossed the tablet back across the desk.
Anxiety gnawed at Callum's nerves as he caught the expensive device. "Mr. Thorne, should we abort this spying? If Old Mr. Thorne discovers this invasive surveillance targeting his favored granddaughter-in-law, the blowback will be impossible to manage."
Declan sat back in his leather chair. "No."
The single syllable carried a chilling weight. Deep, primal instincts screamed louder than logic, warning him that the woman occupying his home was a trained saboteur hiding behind a mask of idiocy. He remained resolute in his mission to safeguard the Thorne empire. He refused to let a viper weave a path of destruction from within his own walls. He vowed to keep her suffocated by the surveillance until she made a catastrophic slip, locking in his determination to break her in this tense game of cat-and-mouse.
