Flawless Deception

The collective eyes of the elite crowd widened in voyeuristic shock, drinking in the disastrous sight. Standing half-naked in the freezing corridor with ruined fabric clinging to her skin, Camilla lost her grip on rational thought. She gave up her curated grace and shrieked like a banshee at the woman cowering before her.

"You retard! What the hell are you saying? You tore my dress to shreds!" Camilla threw her voice down the echoing hallway, her chest heaving with rage.

Harsh, mocking whispers rippled outward from the wealthy onlookers. Camilla scanned the judging faces, but her gaze slammed into the furious, apocalyptic stare of Archibald Thorne. Her stomach dropped like a stone. She realized the catastrophic magnitude of causing a vulgar scene at the Thorne patriarch's solemn eightieth birthday celebration.

"Mr. Thorne, I can explain everything to you. She attacked me first." Camilla stammered out a pathetic defense, taking a desperate step forward.

Valerie gave her no time to recover. She executed an Oscar-worthy maneuver on the spot. Her knees hit the carpeted floor hard as she crumpled into a sobbing heap. She raised a trembling finger, pointing straight at Camilla while tears streamed down her cheeks.

"Madam shouted at me! She called me a retard!" Valerie wailed into the silent corridor.

The loud, dramatic display cemented her alleged intellectual disability in the public eye while painting Camilla as an unhinged, cruel bully. Witnessing his granddaughter-in-law's heartbroken tears, Archibald moved on instinctual fury. He abandoned his cane, knelt on the floor beside Valerie, and gently coaxed her shoulder.

"Valerie, do not be upset. You are the smartest girl in the world."

Eager sycophants in the crowd instantly chimed in to flatter the old man, desperate to align with the Thorne patriarch.

"Of course! Mrs. Thorne is the smartest!"

"No one could ever doubt it!"

Valerie pouted, jabbing an accusing finger around the circle of rich tycoons. "You are all a bunch of liars! Madam called me a retard, so I must be a retard!"

Archibald’s face contorted into a mask of pure, lethal authority. He rose to his feet and glared down at the shivering, exposed woman.

"She is the true retard here. Where is security? Get this retard out of my sight right now!" Archibald roared at the staff.

Two massive, black-clad security guards broke through the crowd at once. They flanked Camilla, ruthlessly gripping her bare arms. Panic seized her struggling frame as their iron grips dug into her flesh.

"That is not what happened! She is lying! She is sane!" Camilla wildly thrashed against the guards, screaming her warnings toward the patriarch.

Her desperate accusations only triggered a louder, more pitiful bout of sobbing from Valerie. The noise annihilated the last shred of Archibald's patience. He stepped forward to deliver a crushing blow.

"Since you can orchestrate such cruelty in public, I will assume the Vance family no longer wishes to collaborate with the Thornes. We are severing all business ties with you immediately. Consider yourself banished from my sight forever." His booming voice echoed off the marble walls, sealing her fate.

The security guards dragged a dumbfounded, struggling Camilla away from the venue. One of the massive men unceremoniously clamped a heavy hand over her screaming mouth to smother her protests. The terrifying weight of Archibald's financial excommunication sent a shockwave through the gathered guests. Numerous tycoons stood silent, making immediate mental calculations to dissolve their own contracts with the sinking Vance family. Nobody dared invite the wrath of the Thorne empire.

Hidden from the crowd's direct view behind Archibald, Valerie shut off the waterworks. She stared at the old man's tailored back with a masked shrewdness shining in her eyes. The logic worked without a single flaw. A retard could never logically lie, which meant Camilla's social climbing dreams were annihilated for good.

Much later into the night at the Vance residence, a glass vase shattered against the bedroom wall.

A disheveled, hollow-eyed Camilla systematically wrecked her luxurious room in a screaming rage. Every meticulous plan she had charted for her future as Mrs. Thorne had been burned to ash by that stuttering idiot. She ripped the sheets from the bed and hurled her expensive cosmetics across the room.

Martha rushed through the open door, drawn by the sounds of breaking glass. Her heart ached at the sight of her daughter's torn dress and ruined makeup. Camilla collapsed onto the edge of the mattress. Between wracking sobs, she recounted the disastrous events of the party to her mother.

Martha's face went slack with bewilderment. "What are you saying? Valerie is not dead? She walked right into the party and she is legally bound to Declan Thorne?"

Camilla ground her teeth loud enough to be heard in the quiet room. Her jaw clenched into a terrifying grimace as she glared at the shredded fabric hanging off her shoulders.

"She didn't die from the fall the first time around, but I won't make the same mistake twice. I am prepared to slaughter her again to claim Declan as my own!"
