The Innocent Arrival

Vaughn paced the hardwood floor of his sprawling master bedroom like a caged beast.

"I thought you told me Jenna’s replacement was on her way. Where the hell is she then?" He shouted into his phone, his deep voice bouncing off the vaulted ceilings.

On the other end of the line, the employment agency representative stammered. She offered up a pathetic, scrambling excuse, trying to blame the morning city traffic for the new housekeeper's delay.

Vaughn sneered. His grip tightened around his phone until his knuckles turned white. "I do not pay for excuses about traffic. I pay for results."

He slammed the phone down onto his glass nightstand, severing the connection before the woman could utter another useless word. He took a sharp breath, shoved a hand through his dark hair, and surveyed the disastrous state of his bedroom with deep disgust.

The massive king-sized bed was unmade. Silk sheets lay tangled and shoved to the foot of the expensive mattress, bearing the stark, lingering stains of cum and sweat left behind from his recent sexcapade. The red-haired escort from last night had served her purpose in his bed, but the sticky aftermath left him feeling nothing but contempt. Vaughn refused to entangle himself emotionally with women. He merely fucked them to feed his sexual desires, paid them handsomely, and sent them packing before dawn.

He needed his domestic life kept perfectly in order, and his previous housekeeper, Jenna, had left a gaping void in his schedule when she quit to attend college. She had been an attractive woman, but he refused to cross that line with his regular staff. He preferred high-end whores for his physical needs. Now, he desperately required a reliable maid to handle this filth and restore his daily routine.

Vaughn turned his back on the ruined bed and strode into his expansive walk-in closet. He pulled on a crisp white dress shirt and a tailored black suit jacket, dressing swiftly for his corporate office. Time was money, and he was already wasting both. He snapped his watch into place, grabbed his leather briefcase, and shoved his phone into his trousers. Firmly resolved, he made a silent vow as he exited the bedroom. If the new maid had not begun cleaning this estate top to bottom before his return, he would ruin that agency. He would make it his personal mission to destroy their business throughout the city.

Miles away, Liana sat silently in the back of a rattling yellow cab. She wiped away stray tears with the back of her hand as the familiar, weathered stone walls of the convent faded into the hazy distance behind her. The safety and warmth she had known for twenty years was gone, replaced by the daunting, open road leading toward Los Angeles.

As the cab merged onto the highway, her tears dried, replaced by a sudden rush of wide-eyed wonder. She leaned forward, pressing her palms against the smudged taxi window. Her breath hitched in her throat. Towering glass skyscrapers pierced the low-hanging clouds like giant needles of steel. Roaring traffic formed an endless, chaotic river of metal along the multi-lane highways. Crowds of people blurred past on the sidewalks, moving with a dizzying, frantic speed that Liana had only ever encountered in the faded pages of old library books.

The sheer scale of the city was intoxicating and terrifying. The driver glanced at her through his rearview mirror, noticing her unblinking stare. He offered a sympathetic smile, clearly recognizing her as a sheltered young woman stepping out into a scary new world. Liana paid no mind to his pity. She was too busy absorbing the mechanical beast of downtown Los Angeles, silently promising Marcella that she would conquer this place and bring them both a better life.

The cab deposited her onto a crowded street corner right in front of the hectic employment agency. Liana paid the fare, grabbed her modest canvas travel bags, and pushed through the heavy glass doors into the bustling lobby.

The interior was a buzzing hive of ringing telephones and stressed office workers rushing past cubicles. Undeterred by the sheer volume of noise, Liana walked up to the front reception counter. She offered the young receptionist her brightest, most innocent smile.

"Hello. I am Liana Vance, the new housekeeper."

The receptionist stopped typing and eyed Liana’s plain floral dress with a fierce sneer. "You are the bitch that is supposed to resume work today?"

Unshaken by the direct hostility, Liana maintained her gentle smile. She nodded politely, assuming city people simply had rougher vocabularies.

"Yes, that is me."

The receptionist scoffed, aggressively jabbing a button on her desk phone to alert her boss.

Before Liana could process the rude behavior, a flustered woman in her early thirties sprinted out of a back office. Margo, the agency head, practically skidded to a halt in front of the reception counter. She scrutinized Liana from head to toe, taking in the cheap clothes and braided blonde bun, before letting out a sharp, stressed sigh.

"Liana Vance?"

"That is me. Good morning."

Margo dragged a hand down her pale face. "I was half-tempted to replace you an hour ago. Let us just say luck is on your side today. Your new boss, our billionaire client, is already in a furious rage. You need to leave right now before you infuriate him any further."

Margo dug a pen out of her blazer pocket, scribbled an address onto a scrap of paper, and thrust it directly into Liana’s hand.

"Listen to me closely, Liana. The agency will extract a twenty percent cut of your wages. That is non-negotiable. I have already sorted out the paperwork with your new boss. Do you understand?"

Liana stared down at the messy ink on the paper. She looked back up with wide, honest eyes.

"I understand the wage cut. But I have never navigated the city before, and I have no idea how to reach this address."

Margo gaped at her in utter disbelief. Her mouth parted, eyes blinking rapidly at the confession.

"Are you kidding me right now?"

"I am very sorry." Liana gripped her bags tighter. "I have no sense of direction here."

"Take a cab." Margo pointed a stern manicured finger toward the exit. "Give the driver the address on that paper. Every single driver in Los Angeles knows the Mercer name. Get moving!"

Liana dipped her head in a polite nod, thanked the exasperated woman profusely, and hurried back out into the deafening noise of the busy street.

Locating another empty cab took her over fifteen minutes of awkward waving, but she finally flagged one down in the heavy traffic. She handed the scribbled paper to the driver. True to Margo's word, the man did not even check a map. He merely grunted, pulled away from the curb, and whisked her out of the downtown core toward the city's upscale hills.

The taxi climbed higher into the hills, the houses growing larger and more extravagant with every passing mile winding up the private roads. Finally, the cab rolled to a smooth stop. Liana paid the driver with her meager savings, collected her heavy bags, and stepped onto the pristine paved driveway.

She stood frozen, overwhelmed by her surroundings. A magnificent, palace-like estate loomed before her, obscured behind towering black iron gates. The imposing barrier seemed to stretch up into the sky, guarding the property from the outside world. The sheer scale and unimaginable display of wealth felt lifted straight out of one of the fairy tales the older nuns used to read at bedtime.

Dominating the stone pillar beside the massive gates was a gleaming, polished gold sign. It caught the morning sunlight, spelling out a single imposing word: *Mercer's*.

Her heart hammered a frantic rhythm against her ribs. Nervous trepidation washed over her, chilling her fingertips despite the warm California breeze. This was no ordinary wealthy employer. This was an intimidating, sprawling empire that she was meant to infiltrate and maintain. Whoever lived behind those imposing walls possessed the exact kind of untouchable success she had always dreamed of attaining for herself and Marcella.

She clutched the canvas handles of her bags tighter, feeling minuscule against the backdrop of the mansion. Her breathing grew shallow.

Liana closed her eyes, bowed her head, and whispered a fervent, quiet prayer for heavenly guidance and strength.

She opened her eyes, took a deep breath to steady her nerves, and timidly approached the front security checkpoint.
