Deadly in Silk
POV: Dante
I stood near the tall window of Cassian’s sprawling office. The antique grandfather clock in the corner marked the passing time with a rhythmic ticking. The sound echoed off the bookshelves and mahogany panels, but it failed to pull my focus. Cassian sat behind his massive desk. He held a phone to his ear, barking orders in rapid Italian to secure a delayed weapons shipment at the docks. The heavy smoke from his premium cigar hung thick in the air, mixing with the scent of old paper and leather. Marcello sprawled on the opposite sofa. He stared down at his phone screen, tapping out quick messages. The business of the De Leone syndicate moved forward. My mind remained trapped in the past.
The burning memory of the warehouse ambush played on a relentless loop. I remembered the deafening crack of gunfire and the acrid stench of cordite lingering in the steel rafters. Amid the chaos and the bleeding bodies, I saw her. Vittoria D'Amore. She embodied pure fire and cold steel wrapped elegantly in expensive silk. Most people folded under the pressure of flying lead and imminent death. They surrendered. She did not know the meaning of the word. She possessed a fierce, unyielding defiance that set a dangerous fire in my blood. I found myself savoring that challenge far more than I should. It was a fatal distraction.
Cassian slammed the heavy phone receiver down onto its cradle. The sharp noise snapped me back to the present. He picked up his smoldering cigar and took a measured drag. His calculating gaze shifted from the open ledger on his desk to my face. He exhaled a plume of gray smoke into the room. "We have the annual Florentine Ball this upcoming weekend."
I scowled, crossing my arms over my chest. I turned my back on the window to face him. "Since when do I ever get dressed up in a monkey suit for fake parties packed with arrogant men and their plastic smiles?"
Marcello pushed himself up from the leather sofa. He tossed his phone onto the glass coffee table with a loud clatter. "Since we are currently partnering with one of the most powerful mafia families in all of Europe. And since Vittoria D'Amore will be there. What, Dante? Do you actually think we do not notice the way you look at her during these meetings?" Marcello leaned forward, locking eyes with me. "You are smitten."
I clenched my jaw, refusing to give his taunt the oxygen it craved. I kept my expression an impenetrable mask.
Cassian rested his elbows on the polished wood surface of his desk. His tone shifted, shedding the casual demeanor. "I want you at that venue, Dante. I need you there to observe her in a social setting. I want to see if she can hold court and navigate vicious syndicate politics the exact way an heir is meant to. We need to know if the D'Amore successor crumbles under the spotlight."
Marcello drummed his fingers against his knee, the smirk vanishing from his features. "I do not trust them. An alliance with that syndicate is a massive risk. The D'Amores are nothing but venomous snakes disguised in designer clothing."
I held my brother’s stern gaze, feeling the familiar coldness settle back over my shoulders. "We are venomous snakes too."
Marcello nodded, his eyes darkening with a familiar grim shadow. "The difference is that we know exactly what we are. They claim a moral high ground they do not possess."
I uncrossed my arms and turned toward the heavy oak door. The decision formed the second her name dropped into the conversation. "I will go to the damn ball."
I grabbed the brass handle and pulled the door open. Before I could step out into the hallway, Marcello’s voice hit my back. "Do not lose your head over her, Dante."
I marched out of the room without issuing a reply. The heavy wooden door clicked shut behind me. I walked down the corridor, the silence of the estate pressing in on me. Marcello offered a valid warning, but I feared I had already crossed that line. I wanted to see if this lethal viper in silk would command a room filled with monsters. Or perhaps, she would finally submit to my will. The anticipation gnawed at my ribs.
Night finally crept over the city like a loaded gun pressed flush against the base of a skull. The sprawling De Leone estate descended into quiet pre-ball preparations. I stood before the towering mirror in my private quarters. I methodically dressed in my usual, impeccably tailored black suit. The heavy fabric served as my chosen armor. It projected power and rigid control over the chaos of my life. I fastened the buttons of my crisp shirt, abandoning the standard tie. I rolled my shoulders to test the custom fit. I lifted my hands and adjusted the cold silver cufflinks at my wrists. The metal gleamed in the dim light. I stared at my own reflection in the glass. My dark eyes offered zero warmth. I looked exactly like the executioner the underworld knew me to be.
I stepped out of my room and descended the winding grand staircase to the main foyer. Cassian stood near the towering double doors. He wore a dark navy jacket with subtle gold accents. Carmela stood inches from him, her hands resting flat against his chest as she smoothed his lapel. She possessed a radiant, genuine sophistication that did not belong in our blood-soaked reality. Cassian looked down at his wife. His hardened features melted into an expression of gentle, tamed affection. He pressed his hand to the small of her back with a protective softness.
I gripped the wooden banister, my knuckles turning stark white. Watching my ruthless older brother display such profound vulnerability made my chest tighten. I shoved the feeling down into the abyss. I could never afford to be that soft. I could never allow my guard to drop for a single second. Certainly not with a feral creature like Vittoria D'Amore. Showing her an exposed throat meant inviting a blade.
The ride to the grand venue felt endless. The armored SUV glided through the neon-drenched streets. The bulletproof glass muffled the chaotic city noise. We finally pulled up to the curb, tires hissing against the damp pavement. Armed guards secured the perimeter and pulled the heavy car doors open.
We stepped out of the dark vehicles and walked straight into a blinding, opulent world. The grand venue dripped with cartel excess. Massive crystal chandeliers hung off the vaulted ceilings, casting fractured golden light over the sprawling floor. The air carried the heavy scent of expensive floral arrangements, roasted meats, and vintage champagne. It was a twisted fairytale written by a mass murderer.
We moved through the gilded entranceway. Powerful men in custom tuxedos turned to acknowledge our arrival. Fear bled through their forced pleasantries. I aggressively exchanged hollow, bone-crushing handshakes with rival bosses and corrupt politicians. I nodded at greetings I did not hear. My dark gaze relentless swept the massive room. I checked the sprawling balconies. I scanned the crowded bar areas. I searched the VIP tables for any sign of her. The frustration coiled tighter in my stomach with every useless face I passed.
Then, the underlying tension in the room abruptly shifted.
A sudden, hushed buzz rapidly swept across the grand marble floor. The noise originated from the sweeping marble staircase at the far end of the room. The classical string quartet continued playing in the corner, but the sound of human voices vanished. Every head turned in unison. The dense sea of powerful, arrogant men stopped breathing.
I turned my head.
Vittoria D'Amore descended the sweeping marble steps exactly like a ruthless queen ascending her bloody throne. The surrounding opulence faded into background noise. She commanded every molecule of oxygen in the grand hall.
She wore a stunning black and midnight-blue silk dress. The luxurious fabric hugged the lethal curve of her hips and flowed down to the white marble. A scandalous, thigh-high slit sliced up the left side of the gown. It exposed her toned, endless leg and a vicious stiletto heel with every measured step. Massive, priceless diamonds rested against her bare collarbone. The gems flashed brightly under the chandelier light, drawing the eye to the smooth column of her neck.
The murmurs died out. The sprawling crowd of capos, dons, and executioners practically parted for her. They stepped aside out of sheer awe and raw, instinctual fear. She did not bother to glance at the men scrambling to clear her path.
She found me.
Her fearless, unwavering, obsidian eyes locked directly onto mine across the massive room. The gaze hit me with the kinetic force of a physical blow. She moved through the parted crowd. This lethal predator in an elegant disguise walked slowly toward me. Her stride contained a measured, deadly precision. She did not rush. She did not hesitate. She owned the space between us.
My chest constricted. My heart beat once, incredibly hard against my ribs.
She stopped mere inches from my polished shoes. The sharp scent of her signature perfume invaded my lungs. She tilted her chin up, holding her ground against my towering frame.
"Dante De Leone. I see you clean up well." Her voice flowed smooth as pure sin, hitting my ears twice as dangerous as a chambered round.
I smirked, captivated by the breathtaking sight of her. "Likewise."
She did not break eye contact. She slowly, deliberately extended her bare hand toward my chest. The challenge hung in the space separating our bodies.
I reached out and took her hand.
And the exact moment our bare skin touched —
