Calculated Risk
POV: Dante
The heavy oak door of the De Leone compound shut behind me. I pulled my arms from my ruined jacket and tossed the blood-stained fabric onto the marble floor. It landed with a wet thud against the pristine stone. I stood in the quiet entryway, rolling the tension out of my neck.
Marcello walked out of the east hallway holding a crystal glass of liquor. His sharp eyes scanned my disheveled appearance. He stared at the dark smudges of drying blood staining my white dress shirt.
"You look like hell," Marcello stated, bringing the glass to his lips.
"You should see the other guys," I retorted, digging my thumbs into my sore muscles.
Cassian strolled into the expansive living room next. His quiet demeanor served as a perfect mask for the storm of violence always brewing beneath his skin. Carmela followed close behind him, her brow furrowed in concern as she took in the sight of my bruised knuckles and ruined clothes. Cassian stopped in the center of the Persian rug, reigning over the room with unquestionable authority.
"I want to know exactly what the fuck happened tonight," Cassian demanded, his voice echoing off the vaulted ceilings.
I walked over to a plush leather armchair and collapsed onto the cushions. My bones ached from the brutal combat and the sudden adrenaline crash. I let my head fall back with an exhausted sigh. "My peaceful meeting with the D'Amore princess turned into a goddamn war zone."
Marcello frowned and stepped closer. Carmela rested her hand gently on Cassian's broad shoulder.
I sat up and detailed the chaos of the ambush step by step. I explained how the high-caliber bullets tore through her car windows in a synchronized strike. I recalled the deafening shatter of safety glass raining down on the leather seats. I described our narrow escape in her fortified vehicle, speeding through the dark streets toward a secluded warehouse near the industrial east docks. The warehouse was supposed to be a safe zone. Instead, we found a nightmare waiting for us.
"We found a butchered body left on the concrete floor," I told them, resting my forearms on my knees. "The assassins left a warning painted in fresh blood on the wall. The message read, 'You're next Vittoria'."
Cassian's jaw tightened.
"I have no idea who is behind the hits," I admitted with a frustrated growl. "But they are organized and well-funded. They wanted to execute her on her own turf to establish dominance."
Cassian kept his gaze fixed on me. "And Vittoria?"
A dark smirk pulled at the corners of my mouth. "She took out most of their trained men without flinching. She held her ground like a seasoned soldier born for the battlefield. She did not seek my protection. She aimed, fired, and watched them drop."
Marcello cursed and marched over to the liquor cabinet. He grabbed an empty glass and poured a heavy measure of whiskey. The bottle clinked against the crystal rim with restless energy. "Dante, maybe we should not get involved with the D'Amores right now. This kind of heat is a death sentence. This coordination is not worth the risk to our family. We have our own territories to maintain."
"Power never comes without risk," Cassian interrupted softly but firmly.
The quiet weight of Cassian's voice silenced Marcello. Cassian slowly turned his focus back to me, his dark eyes piercing through my defenses.
"I wanted to know if that infamous girl is as deadly as the rumors claim," Cassian continued. "What do you think, Dante?"
I accepted the glass of whiskey Marcello shoved at me. I swirled the amber liquid, watching the liquid coat the sides of the crystal. The memory of Vittoria grinning in the crossfire sent a surge of raw electricity straight to my groin.
"She is impressive," I confessed, my voice low. "Cold but calculated. She does not flinch under fire. There is a wild fire in her skin. She likes control."
Cassian nodded slowly. "We track down the men hunting her. Whoever had the audacity to touch the D'Amores will come for the De Leones next. This city is a chessboard, and the pieces are moving."
Marcello protested the decree with a furious wave of his hand. "You want to drag our family into someone else's messy blood feud? For a woman you barely know? This is a suicide mission!"
"We were involved the second they hit our club with explosives," I shot back, gripping the arms of the chair. "Whoever orchestrated this string of violence is trying to make a violent statement to the entire city. They will not stop with the D'Amores. If they burn Vincenzo, we are the next target."
Marcello scoffed at my tactical defense. He took two aggressive steps toward my chair, zeroing in on the slight hesitation I had shown when speaking about Vittoria.
"Oh, for fuck's sake, Dante! This is about you. You just want her. You want to screw the mafia princess. Fine. But do not drag the rest of us into her war just so you can get laid!" Marcello yelled, his patience fracturing into pieces.
"It is not about her," I retorted, standing up to face him. My jaw clenched tight enough to crack a tooth.
It was a lie. Deep down in the darkest part of my soul, I was already hungering for the addictive rush of her defiance. I wanted to pin her down against a wall to break her iron control. I wanted to see if she tasted as sweet and untamed as she fought. My obsession with her was growing into a fatal liability, a drug I craved with reckless abandon.
"It is about whoever is trying to destroy both of our families in one stroke," I continued, forcing an icy calm into my tone. "We eliminate the threat before they breach our gates."
"Quiet," Cassian commanded, his voice cutting through the rising tension of the room.
Both Marcello and I snapped our mouths shut.
"Marcello, tap into our London and Berlin syndicate contacts right now," Cassian ordered, taking charge of the chaos. "See what kind of weaponry and money is moving through the underground channels. A hit this big leaves a financial trail. I will call in old debts to gauge the political ripples in the city. We strike back before they catch their breath."
Marcello glared at me, turned on his heel, and stormed out of the room. The loud thud of his boots echoed down the corridor, a final testament to his anger.
Cassian turned back to me. He assessed the blood staining my hands. "And you, brother? What is your play?"
"I will be seeing her again very soon. We need to work together if we are going to survive this hunt. Our intel combined with theirs gives us the ultimate advantage."
He studied me for a long moment. "Be careful, Dante. Women like that do not let you go clean. They leave scars."
"Neither do I," I muttered darkly. I tipped my head back and drank the rest of my whiskey in one swallow. The alcohol burned a fiery path down my throat.
I left Cassian and Carmela standing in the quiet living room and navigated the long hallway. I pulled open the heavy glass doors and stepped outside onto the sprawling stone balcony.
The freezing night air bit viciously at my bare skin, creeping through the thin fabric of my ruined white shirt. I gripped the cold marble balustrade with both hands, my knuckles turning white as I stared out into the pitch-black distance. Down below, armed guards patrolled the lit grounds of our estate. Attack dogs roamed the perimeter chains, and the harsh glare of security floodlights painted the manicured lawns in unyielding white. Men with automatic rifles stood watch by the massive iron gates, ensuring no unwelcome guests breached our borders.
Out there somewhere in the sprawling, neon-lit city, somebody dangerous was hunting us. They were hiding in the shadows, orchestrating a brutal takeover, watching our fortresses with hungry eyes. They firmly believed they were the unseen predators lurking in the dark alleyways, armed with untraceable wealth and a legion of ghost assassins. They thought they possessed the ultimate element of surprise.
A cruel, slow smile stretched across my battered face. I thought of Vittoria pacing in her own fortress right now, plotting bloody revenge with the very same ruthless energy pumping through my veins. The obsession was a living thing, taking firm root and burying itself deep into the cage of my ribs. I welcomed the incoming chaos with open arms. I craved the impending storm of bullets, shattered bone, and blood-soaked concrete. The rush of war was thrilling, but the thought of surviving it with Vittoria by my side was intoxicating.
They were hunting us.
And I was already hunting them.
